    Ibex depredation hunt

Good morning...I have been asking questions on the Long range shooting section and thought I would post a pic here. I was drawn to hunt ibex in New Mexico. It was last minute call from game and fish and was a depredation hunt with 2 animals allowed to be taken as long as they were nannies or immature billies. This billy went 14.5 and 14.75. Had to be under 15 inches. I was able to take him at 444 yards. The ibex were very skittish on this hunt as they were being pushed all over the mountain by other hunters. A buddy of mine loaned me his 300 win mag with m4 scope. That set up was incredible so i knew that if an opportunity presented itself within 600 yards I would have a good chance. This billy showed himself briefly with a nannie. They started at the top of the mountain and worked their way down to were I could get a good shot. Not a very big target ar 400 yards but that scope was amazing and I held rock solid on him as he stood briefly and gave me a broadside shot. He went about 64 yards as the hit wasn't great. My nannie I was flying solo and was able to take her at 275 yards. She was with 3 sub adult billies and 1 billiy that went may be 28 inches. I decided on the nannie as she gave me the best shot opportunity. At the shot I heard a loud crack. Thought I missed her but after heading up the mountain to inspect for blood I found her dead in her tracks. I had hit high and destroyed the forward spine. Great hunt but very demanding!!! I'm now in a draw for 1 of 10 billy tags for next Feb. There were 150 hunters but they all need to get two animals. No small feit. I know of at least 20 who filled so overall I think my odds are pretty good. Fingers crossed!!!!!!! have a great day, jake

    Best places to flyfish

I know its a bit of a drive and not in AZ but the San Juan river is awesome! My boy and I heading there for spring break. Yes there are other fisherman there but whats great is most the time you feel like your alone anyway. You can find pockets of good fish and be fishing alone. I have noticed since gass prices went up that the crowds of people are no longer there. Im taliking about Saturdays to. River fishes great year round. Anyway, just a thought.

    Ibex depredation hunt

I had enough time to glass this billy as he and the nannie moved down the mountain. I was certain when I took the shot this animal was a legal goat. Anyway it all worked out eh. It was not a guided hunt. I am about to finish with the European mounts I did with them. Looking good so far. My wife is going to put them in her office along with all her other critter parts:). Shes a wildlife biologist and goes to school at times to present the work they are doing on the refuge etc. She always brings skulls and these two will be a great addition for education. ost kids have no clue that there is life on that big ole rock. Thanks for all the feedback. Ill get them posted once I have completed the mounts. Have a great week. Jake

    270 set up

Hey folks, Just got back from Ibex hunt here in NM. Used a friends 300 win mag with long range scope set up. Made a 444 yard shot with ease. Unbelievable. Here is my question. I have a 270 with timney trigger and synthetic stock. Ive killed elk, oryx, deer with it and swear by the load but I want to be able to reach out to 800 with it. Is this a smart thing to do with this caliber or should I go and get a 300 mag? I know I need a scope[e set up for it and here that Leoplod makes a scope around 600 bucks and will send you the right MOA nob thingy for it once you give them the load set up. Any advice is greatly appreciated. My wife also uses this rifle and shoots it very well but I really want to get a long range set up. Thanks for any advice, jake

    HELP!! NEED TIRES!!

Well.......Have had 2 flat tires the last two days! Need advice on tires for my ford ecoboost 4x4. came with the crappy wranglers. Looking for a 10 ply that will withstand mesquite thorns but not hurt my gas mileage. Is that possible. Any advice greatly appreciated. Side note......Both tires I have flattened got a spine threw sidewall so they are having to be replaced. What a fricken joke!! Im so pissed!!! Any help greatly appreciated. thanks, Jake

    Even more NM coues.

Hey brett, Awsome bucks!! Im a transplant here in NM from Tucson. Hunted coues all my life down by Arivaca. Seeing these pictures really have me fired up for next year. Ive been killing carp in 23 for a few years and had no idea there was a huntable population of whitetail. Glassed up 2 doe coues this year over by mule creek. No bucks though. Im really gl;ad they are going to a draw this year. Ran in to a guy walking down the road with a tripod and good glasses. I told my partner that I bet he is from AZ looking for whitatail. Sure enough, real nice guy. Im officially hanging up any aspirations of carp and going strictly coues from now on. Any advice on were to scout.\ etc? I have a javelina tag for Feb and plan on archery hunting in 23. Would like to look for whitail while Im at it. Any sitings of javelina on your hunt? Thanks for the great story and pics. Sorry for the idiot road hunters. Ive come to just live with them and there menality. Keeps them out of my glasses though which is nice. Great Job!! Jake

Jeff, Thanks for the information. Ill give them a call. As far as looking over maps that would be great. I really am looking to find a place I can glass. i guess its the experiences I had in Arizona. Any other way to hunt them would seem foreign to me. Drop me a line when your coming into town and well talk. jweisenbmkz@yahoo.com Thanks again to all the replies!

    Need Help!!

Jeff, I am in Las Cruces. I have backpacked the Gila quite a bit years ago and never thought to check for Coues. Any help would be great. Cant wait to get back at it. They are the most beautiful deer and smart as can be. I generally hunt with a recurve but years of chasing them in Az without success put me into a rifle. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on a hilltop glassing the country for those guys.
