No, Vortex have two modes. You can use it with out the angle compensator or with the angle compensator.

If you are going to make shots over 1,000 yards, yes get the Leicas or Swaros if you have the $$$$. My Vortex Range Finder reads further than I can shoot. I haven't try to read something 1000 yards away or further simple cause I wont shot that far. But I read a huge boulder across canyon at 876 yards once. My range finder is the Vortex 1000. I ordered from Doug in Cameraland with free shipping. 4 days later I had my Vortex Range Finder Ernesto C
