Now that 23S is closed, would my weekend be better spent hunting an open area that I'm totally unfamiliar with, or scouting the few spots I do know while waiting for the next hunt to open. Since the Bears travel so much this time of year, what are the chances they might even be in the same canyon a week later?

I was making up a batch of ammo using 180 gn accubonds last night for my 300 Win Mag. I had to open a new box of bullets and when checking measurements, noticed that the ogive on the newer box was 10/1000ths closer to the bullet tip than the previous box. Has anyone else experienced this and do you have any idea how it might affect the ballistics? i reset my dies so seating depth is where it's supposed to be, but this doesn't make me confident at longer ranges.

I gotta say I'm quite disappointed that my chosen bear unit is closed already. Surely I'm not the only one experiencing this frustration. Thanks for letting me vent.

I think I'll just set up camp and cook bacon continuously while I relax in a chair and wait for one to wander in.

I guess it's time to try to find some new spots.

I am curious how large of any area a mule deer uses, especially during the rut? Normally, I look for does just before the rut and soon enough, the bucks will be there. It's not the unknown places where they hang out all year long but the places and distance where they are now. The reason I'm asking is because I'm hunting a buck that I have only seen on camera. Like clockwork with rare exception, he comes to water every night between midnight and 4 am. There are does in the area and I've seen other bucks, but not this guy. Through process of elimination I have been searching areas within a few miles of the water but with no luck. Any thoughts?

Hello to all you successful bear hunters and congratulations to you on what seems to me to be the toughest animal I've ever hunted. I have been sweating and getting mosquito bitten in August every chance I've had for the past 6 years or so trying to get a bear in the pears. On some of my scouting trips I have seen a bear or two, but either I have seen nothing when I returned to hunt, the unit I had scouted was closed and I had to wander elsewhere or I have spent hours looking in the wrong locations. The closest I have ever been to killing a bear is once I glassed up a bear that came through a saddle and worked his way down the mountain to the very bottom while I ran like a maniac to close the gap only for it to get dark before I made it. The other time is this past weekend. I spend a few days seeing nothing in the prickly pear areas I was hunting so I moved to the steepest, nastiest canyon I could find. Sunday afternoon glassed up a nice bear across the canyon and watched him til it got dark. My problem was that the canyon had steep bluffs as far as I could see on both sides with absolutely no way down except to head up canyon 3 or 4 miles and then try to sidehill along and up and over the multiple cuts and ridges along the canyon. To make the story short, The plan was to get on my ledge at first light, glass up the bear, head back up canyon, then back down and hopefully shoot the bear. Well.... It took me 3 hours to find the bear and the closest I could get before he totally disappeared was 750 yards. Then it was pack up and head back home to work. I need help!!!! These are a few of my questions- What elevation should I be hunting? Where the pears just start? or a ways down lower where they seem to be much riper? Is water a must have? What about a water hole? Does that suffice? How do you guys scout? I feel like I'm looking for a needle in a haystack searching for tracks etc. I've heard it said 'follow the food, that's where the bears will be.' It seems that there's food everywhere? Should I just zigzag and hike up and down random canyons in search of a fresh pile of berries? Finally, compared to where they are now, where do the bears go in October and through the fall months. Am a wasting my time looking for them lower down during that time? My hope is to somehow miraculously find one when the season re-opens in October. thanks for any help, Humble Pie

Thanks for the thoughts Kidso. You mentioned that you call in a canyon for 45 minutes. At that point do you switch to a new canyon? My reason for asking is that the canyon I was calling in was miles and miles long and a long way across, well over a mile from top to top. Also, what type of call do you think works best? A cottontail, jackrabbit, cub in distress, fawn bleat? thanks.

I was fortunate enough to get this fantastic buck this past Sunday. I'm pretty proud of him.

Sorry I haven't posted the story. I'm getting ready to leave town until the end of the month but will try to post something when I get back. In any case here's a couple of pics of him before the stalk. The first pic is where I glassed him up bedded and the second when he was feeding around and following a doe.

I haven't tried to age him but he was missing a few teeth on one side. I kind had a soft hearted moment thinking about how many seasons he survived to get as old and big as he was.

I had him officially scored yesterday and he taped out at 176 2/8 thanks to the mass.

Any of those sights you're looking at seem great to me.... you just want something you can see well in low light conditions, and maybe consider the size of the pin head or fiber optic dot... if you shoot out a ways sometimes the smaller pin helps so you don't end up with a giant blob covering your target. It helps you pick a spot. Also you might consider how close you can cram the pins together if your bow is super fast. I shoot a fixed blade broadhead and a little bit heavier arrow so I try not to exceed 300 fps. This way I have a managable draw weight, good arrow flight, and excellent penetration.

How many pins you need depends on how far you're gonna shoot. I've known some people who can consistently harvest animal out to 90 or so yards and some others who couldn't hit the side of a barn if they were on the inside shooting out. I personally have 7 pins, but would be hesitant most of the time to shoot at 70 or 80 unless the conditons were perfect.... I'd hate to wound something because I took a careless shot. Sure, it may happen from time to time anyway. In any case at the rate I'm going, I don't think I need any pins cuz I can't get close enough for a shot. Just my two cents. Gungho

I've been known to hunt like crazy for days and days, and on a past hunt a friend mentioned that I just might be nuts. When discussing where I thought we should be the next morning by sunrise, he said "you're too gungho for me." Thus the name.
