Just texted one of my buddies who is a higher up at G&F and told him what I did. He finally texted me back when he got done cleaning the toilets and dumping garbage in the offices. He told me I did get a leftover tag after all.

Did you play the wind right? If you are seeing them running ahead of you either you are working too fast or the wind changed and they smelled you. Sounds like you still had fun hunting! Over in 7W on the last day of the bull hunt the elk were feeding back to their bedding area in the rain. They bedded down about 10 A.M.

I helped Lukeduke on his late rifle bull hunt in 7W. We hunted hard Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I estimated I walked 8 miles on Saturday just trying to find sign. I had to go back to work for Monday and Luke stayed up there to hunt the morning and then he had to be back for work and school on Tues. and Wed. The 1st 3 days were warm and windy. No elk were found on Friday. Saturday I glassed up 2 cows and Luke found 6 cows. Sunday was a bust too. Fellow CWT member Lance had helped his girl get a nice bull and he gave Luke a couple spots to try. Thanks for that Lance! Luke and I went back up on Thursday, the last day of the hunt. I had a good feeling that we would finally see elk in the same areas we hunted at the start of the season. It rained all the way up to our area. The cattle in the area were up and feeding so I figured the elk would be too. We saw elk right away but no bulls. We finally got up to a nice hill and right away I glassed up 2 elk feeding at the bottom of the hill about 500 yards below us. One was a bull so Luke decided that he wanted to try for that one. We started our sneak downhill and stayed to the right of them. We had lost sight of them but knew they would still be there. I finally was able to glass the bull in his bed. He never saw us while we were figuring out how to get in position for the shot. Luke finally squirmed into place and shot this bull prone at 200 yards with his Savage .300 Win. Mag. I am so proud of how far he has come as a hunter. I didn't even have to gut this one! (well a little).

Stupid me mailed it to the po box on the envelope. On the leftover list it showed to mail it to the G&F on Carefree HWY. Oh well........

I was down 39 lbs. at my weigh in and came in 3rd in the challenge. It was nice elk hunting this year without feeling bogged down. I hiked some good hills and put some miles on. It's hard not to overeat at X-mas.

Nice! Not bad for a bow guy using a rifle......
-
Nice! How far shot? What gun used?

I hope our girls (and boys) look back on some of these hunts and remember what greats dads we are! Lol! In 30 years hopefully they will still be telling stories of these hunts. We relived a lot of our past elk hunts this weekend while hunting because the elk were hard to find for us. Awesome job Lance and awesome job to Taylor for sticking it out and making a nice shot.

We are having a Biggest Loser challenge at work. $650 winner takes all based on percentage of weight lost. I started at 285 and am now at 253. I think I need to lose 3 to 5 lbs. more to win. Weigh in is on Monday. 13 people in it and only 3 are really trying. My friend at work does Insanity workout almost every morning. I am just watching what I eat and walking 3 times a week. I am going to keep going as it is a lifestyle change. I am buying everyone donuts Monday!

Good luck on your hunt. Just remember anything can happen on your hunt. Be ready when the opportunity presents itself. I've been on hunts where no elk at all were spotted scouting, then opening day they were everywhere and vice versa. I would look for the most roadless areas and brushy hills. Don't know 10 but we'll be right across the highway from you.

I think I know the guy who mounted that scope.....Seems like he was remounting the base the other night......
