    Archery Elk Hunt

I have a very strong opinion of Rage Heads, so strong you probably don't want to hear it. Look for a solid, strong, fixed blade, cut on contact, 2 blade (or 2 blade plus bleeders) for elk.

I have, but only hand held. Pics come out great, once you get the technique down. I believe Vortex makes a digiscoping adapter for this scope.

    3 Point Rule

Ultramag, agreed. Antler point restrictions that leave bucks lying on the hill are bad for everyone. The only point I'm trying to make is that blanket statements about spikes are tough to make. Sure, a 2 year old buck, thats a whopping wide 3x3 has better genetics than a small fork horned 2 year old. That's obvious. And, I sure that SOME spikes, DO have poor genetics. But, to kill spikes, in an attempt to "better" the herd, IN MY OPINION, is a mistake. Genetics, nutrition, late pregnancies, all lead to more spike in the field. Judging a deers long term potential by his first set of antlers is tough to do. In an AZGFD study from 1993, 86% of spikes were yearling deer. Does this mean that 86% of our coues deer have bad genetics? I sure hope not. In my opinion, that spike that you let walk 5 years ago, could be the 110" that you're chasing this year. And I do have personal pictures and experiences to prove that (to myself). Happy hunting,

    3 Point Rule

Sorry, not trying to be argumentative either. You can start by reading Dr. Krolls study, some of which is posted above. Or taking a look at Jim Heffelfingers book, Deer of the Southwest, on page 82. Both are well respected in the field.

    3 Point Rule

Please show me a picture of a mature, adult, 4.5 year old spike deer. I would love to see this deer. I've read extensively on the subject, and dispelled the wive's tale that spike are genetically inferior. I also live amongst dozens of deer year round, and have bucks in my backyard that prove otherwise. Maybe we can get Amanda or Mr. Heffelfinger to chime in.

    3 Point Rule

The theory that spikes are genetically inferior has been disproven many, many times.

Also interested in a trade or partial trade for a decent carry pistol. Semi- auto, compact or sub.
  12. I'm in the process of having a rifle built by Wasatch Precision, still a little ways out, but I'm in the "heavy researching" phase Are you hunting with the Scenars? How have your results been? The bergers would be a new bullet to me, I'm trying to narrow things down before the rifle arrives, so I don't have to test a billion combos. Want to get it down to just a million or so... Thanks for your help guys.

how fast is a deer? archery 2011 video

This January we had a coues buck drop 7 inches at the shot, resulting in a high lung hit. Fortunately, he only went 40 yards and crashed. Yes, he was at water, so he was on the alert, but not looking at the bowhunter. The kicker here is that he dropped 7 inches at NINE YARDS! Another inch, and he would been spined. You can catch it this summer on the Sportsman Channel, end of September.

    Mathews z7 commercial

I'm a mathews guy also, so no bashing here. BUT, while the commercial is bad, it's not near as bad as the bow. Wasn't sure they could make a bow that was harder to tune and shoot fixed blades with than the Z7, but they did it. Maybe they should put the roller guard back where its supposed to be. I'm sure it shoots mechanicals fine from a treestand under 25 yards. At the least the EZ7 with the dren cam will be shootable.

    Elk and Antelope checks cashed?

What is the earliest date these kinds of rumors start circulating? This one has to be one of the earlier ones. My checks cashed last week. You're right! That's about as early and as wrong as I've heard in a while! According to the 2011 Elk and Antelope regulations "Hunt permit-tags and refund warrants mailed out by April 22, 2011" It's safe to say we'll know by then... Btw, My checks have not cashed either.

    Possible new BILL!!!

Since the majority of the quality Pronghorn hunting is on private land in NM, if the tags all go to public draw, I'd be curious to see how high the trespass fees would get and/or how many ranches would simply lock their gates to public hunters. While I agree that the currents system is not fair to residents, I don't like sb 196 the way it is currently written. Anxious to see where the UBNM and Munoz end up.
