Good luck! We need some more hunting WM's out there! You guys are right, It was a terrible idea. Too much time on the road, i guess. This "opportunity" stuff is really getting to me. Why do people want to go on 10% success hunts??? Wait, wait, don't jump on me! I know why, but i don't have to like it. In AZ, we have the OPPPORTUNITY to have great hunting, but for some reason we choose not to. I just wish we had a few more HIGH QUALITY hunts available, even if they would take max points to draw G&F is increasing tags for '09, in units that had leftovers in '08 (coues). Can anyone explain that to me?? If we are not shooting enough deer, why don't we bump the december tag numbers, that are in high demand. example: 200+ tags leftover in unit X, 200+ more tags this year=400 extras that are not in demand. But, wouldn't there be a high demand for 40 additional december tags??? It would knock a bunch of BP holders off the list and offer some great hunting (with only 80-100 tags in the hunt) I'll shut up now Matt

Good point Stanley, unfortunatley most of the units I hunt do not have a WM at all. It's a shame. I guess it's the dept's "opportunity goal" that I don't like at all. I say get rid of all 5000 muley tags and offer 50 that are actually good tags!

Agreed guys. Good points. Would such a small number of harvested deer make a difference? I don't know. Seems like a lot of Muleys dying down south, not getting hunted. I guess I feel like there are alot of muleys in SOAZ that just don't get hunted. They spend the early season in the lowlands (private) and don't move to the foothills until Dec. This is true throughout soaz. I know populations are declining, but I saw 30 plus bucks a day on multiple occasions this year. Seems like all the does would still get bred if we harvested 5-10 deer a year. I wouldn't hunt it, you're right they are dumb in the rut, It was just a thought on a 12 hour drive. I think I'll stick to killing them with a bow Probably a bad idea to offer rifle permits

So your the one who started the fire East of Pine Just kidding, hope you had a good time No, but I could see it from where I was, I just figured they were razing a pot farm

I had a fire last night, north of payson, and talked an police officer for a half an hour while standing next to the fire. He didn't mention anything....

This interesting elk was spotted friday of the junior Turkey hunt in unit 27 Matt

I've been watching this guy for a couple of years and he has dodged an arrow or two in his time. I took this pic two weeks ago I had a couple day break between turkey hunts and went out last night and glassed him up. NO ANTLERS!!! Kicked it into overdrive and found this an hour later Guess the score in his left antler and a gross and lets hope I can find the other one soon. Good luck Matt
-
His left side is 46", Not a wide buck, but should gross just over 100"\ Thanks for looking, hope my math is right

You're right , he dropped the horn I found less than 200 yards from water, I grid searched the area today, even accidently bumped him out of his bed and NO LUCK! That horn is there, and I WILL find it, just a matter of time His amigo dropped also. Kinda suprised i didn't find it either. He lost his left side in the rut and I have NO idea where that is Here he is back in velvet Still looking I'll post his measurements manana

2 hours looking today, haven't found the other side, YET. I did find two old chalk antlers, both forkies.
-
The antler pics were supposed to be kind of a tease for an "on the hoof" guess BUT, If you guys insist on CHEATING , I guess I could put a horn pic up Here's your eyeguard Matt

I LOVE the idea! The juniors aren't out there whackin all the turkeys on the mountain. Great way to get kids involved.

Amanda, Awesome pics! I seem to average about two lion sightings per year in southern Arizona. Last year, I had one cross the road (400 yds from my house) and glassed up about 7 in the last few years. Haven't been able to get one killed yet. In 2001, I glassed up a lion on one of the boulder piles above The Boulders Resort in North Scottsdale. Watched him for an hour before he disappeared. I drove around to see where he went and realized he dropped right into a small gated community . He must have spotted a poodle or maybe a shi-tzu

+1 on the Magnus Stingers, rock solid elk broad head. azhuntnut, thats story sounds familar. In '06 I shot bull hard quartering on the left side with a Stinger. Not the greatest shot, he turned right and I hit him too far back, HARD quartering away. Buried the broadhead in his opposite shoulder, absolutely destroyed his chest cavity. He went a little over 100 yards and skidded into a pile The Rage leaves a big hole, but are just not built for Elk. I had 5 hunters this year shoot rage heads for deer and they always seemed to be fixing the blades before they could take a shot, annoying and time consuming. They do leave big holes in deer, but for elk go a with proven fixed blade. Magnus, Muzzy, T-head.... Take a look at the this angle, Bad shot, good result. The arrow completly disapeared, the pic was taken after it was fished out

No practice tests that I am aware of. Just know the regs really well and you'll do fine. Pay attention to things like "If you change address you have to notify G & F within ??? days" It's in the details.

Looks like a fire in 36B. Maybe Peck Canyon area, southern Tumacacori's or the Atascosas? Been burning for a few days, and I can't seem to find any info on it. The whole Santa Cruz valley is smokey Matt

Yeah, it's Montana. Finally saw it on the news. Thanx They said it was 350 yesterday, but it looks like it's REALLY going now... It'll be good for the area....

How Would You Hunt This Coues Spot?
soazarcher replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I went and looked out the back of the house , and Jim is right, use the ridge to the north and get up high. But, i would not suggest hunting this spot, it is STERILE! -
You can drive in rivers???

I watched a group of javelina clean up a Coues deer gut pile this year. Even licked the rocks when they were done. I used to have a group of Javelina that lived near my old house, They would eat Horse Luber Grasshoppers (mexican generals) like rainbow trout, it was HILARIOUS to watch. So... I would say Omnivorous Matt
