I set up my trail camera for the first time 2 weeks ago on a spring; I went out this past weekend to retrieve my film. As I approached the camera from behind as to not activate the sensor, I saw a coues deer (doe) run from the area. I saw that the camera had been tripped 99 times. You couldn’t imagine the excitement to see that. I Changed the film and batteries and left. When I had the filmed developed I was quit disappointed to see that I had 24 pictures of a branch from a tree that I had not noticed that was in the way. That was a learning experience. My question to all is. How far away do you set up your camera from the objects (tanks, springs or salt beds) you trying get pictures of? Any help would be appreciated. Terry

I was out this past Sunday in unit 6a, found a nice six point elk shed. Looked for about an hour for the other half with no luck. Found it in about 2 inches of snow. I thought is must last years shed, but the more I look at it, I think it is from this year. It's not bleached, chewed on, has all the dark colors. Terry

Amanda, I think those photos are great in telling a story of the age difference. Thanks for sharing some knowledge with us. Terry

Congratulations Amanda, That looks like a good size javelina. It sure is green in the background of all the pictures. Terry

Dan, I believe creating an early hunt (Oct) would relieve a lot of pressure from the late hunt, and increase hunting opportunities at the same time. As you said in you earlier thread “you are limited in the area to hunt due to road closures”. By opening up an Oct hunt, you are giving hunters the opportunity to find new spots. I'm all for this. I tried to e-mail you earlier with the address you gave on another issue, my e-mail came back undeliverable. Can you contact me terry.downs@honeywell.com. Thanks Terry

Ernesto, that is to funny. I liked that. Terry -
That is a awesome buck. You have got me pumped up now. I cannot wait until Aug 27th. I'm sure I will not be fortunate enough to run across something like that. Even if I did, I probably wouldn't be able to pull my bow back. Good luck Terry

Josh, there is a water tank filled by a spring that constantly fills the tank about a 1/2 mile south of were I have been looking. There are some tracks around the tank. There is an area that is quite open to the east that I'm going to look at next. I'm trying to get set up for the archery hunt in late Aug. Thanks for the advise. Terry

I drew a 6a north antlerless archery elk tag. No antelope or deer. I'm excited, can't wait. Kind of glad I didn't get a rifle deer tag, so I can concentrate on an archery deer tag instead. That's what I really what to do, get a deer with my bow. Congrats to everyone who drew a tag. Terry

Question for all to answer. I have been scouting an area in 24a for about 2 months. Every time I go in there I see 4-5 does. I have never seen any bucks within this canyon area. I also have not been able to find any sheds. I was there yesterday, spent the first 2-3 hours of the morning glassing. Saw 5 does, no bucks. Spent the next 4-5 hours walking in the bottoms and in the ravines looking for sheds. Nothing. I'm starting to think the bucks are just not in this area. It is my understanding that bucks tend to themselves for much of the year. only joining the does for the breeding season, and then off they go again tending to themselves. It is also my understanding that coues deer are very territorial and will pretty much live and die in the same area (they typically won't travel far). I'm thinking I need to concentrate on the canyons surrounding the area with the does. Is this correct? Terry

I wonder what the numbers are, with regards to the amount of non-residents that apply for deer, north of the colorado river and for elk state wide. Are we talking about a small percentage of people or is this a staggering number? I'm sure it is the later. I was extremely angery when with first came down and still am, I'm trying to look at this with a positive outlook. We don't really know how this will come out. It might not be that bad. But if it turns out ugly. We hunters have to stand together, write letters, make phone calls to our govenor, complain, let our voices be heard. We are the only ones that can make a difference. Terry

Thank you for the clarification. Terry

This is the verbage from the ruling. "Because the cap plays a role in the drawing system used to determine which hunters will receive a permit to hunt bull elk and antlered deer north of the Colorado River, the judge's ruling forces the Game and Fish Commission to find a method to distribute this year's fall hunt permits in a way that won't discriminate against out-of-state hunters". The wording "north of the colorado river", units 12 &13. Is the 10% cap for non-residential tags state wide or is only in units north of the colorado river? I may be mistaken and correct me if I am. I was reading it that this ruling only affects units north of the colorado river. Can someone help me decipher this? Terry

Here are some question for everyoneto ponder. Is arizona the only state that has a cap on tags for out of state hunters or are there other states that have caps in place? Are there other states that have a law requiring you to be a resident of that state in order to participate in the hunts? Can arizona put into law that you have to be a arizona resident to hunt game here in arizona? Terry
