thats the samthing thats happening with all the ammo -
I went last year (best elk hunt I ever had). Anyway I used the Primos terminator worked well to locate bulls, then I was using mouth calls to get them in closer, that worked well (as you would expect). But it’s such a low sounding call that it (I think) works well when that dream elk is about 60 yards away and you need to close the distance (and being hands free) . I used hoochie mama for the first 3 days and I felt like it did not work well I think the big bulls were familiar with that sound. I would get a bull to come in about 80 to 60 yards and he would turn around and leave. And that happened to me about 3 times first 2 days. My cousin had shot a nice bull on the third day of hunt and he told me that he was using the Primos Hot Lips with Tone Converter Elk Call (This is not a promo for Primos) so naturally I asked him to use it and he showed me what to do and how make a good sound. I worked on my technique all night long at camp and let me tell you that night ( I was not even trying) I had called in 2 bulls (I think ) about 40 to 30 yards away (cool experience ). Next morning I did my sequence of calls shore enough first bull comes in about 50 yards (I let him go about a 250) moved to a spot about 1 mile away and the same thing happened I put that call (hot lips) to use and in about 15 min a bull shows up running and scramming like a had never seen before he got about 30 yards and I got a bad case of buck (bull) fever I hit a branch. Well the same thing happened about 2 hour latter this time I got my 305 bull. I don’t know if I was using the hoochie mama incorrectly or it was to early into the hunt and the bulls were not rutting as hard but I can say that double reed hot lips works great. good luck

them glassing is the way to go thank you all for the info

Anyone ever used calles during the 27 Nov-3 Dec Coues hunt . This is my first time getting this hunt. I have gotten the rut hunt two times and the oct hunt many times always using the glassing method with success. I wanted to know if glassing (alway the best) was the only way to go or if rattling and calling can be used as a option. thank you for any info

It’s your first time so the best thing for you is to start with a 700 Remington you can go from 270, 270 ultra, 30 06, 308, 300, 300 ultra, and 7 mm so on and so on. Starting with a 700 Remington the sky the limit with that style of gun you can do just about anything to it and there is allot of gun smiths out there that know what they are doing with it. As far as caliber go that up to you. I like a 308 it’s a good all around gun. Good match ammo will get you out there to 800 yards no problem. But it’s up to you Find out what you really want to do with the gun, what kind of money you’re willing to put into it. And the big one is what kind of time do you have. In order go out to 300 to 800 + yards you need to do a lot of homework. As far as Scopes well LOL 1 MONEY 2 money 3 money Coues deer and long range paper shooting I think most hunter will tell you Leopold, Zeiss, Nikon, Trijicon, Kahles and NIGHTFORCE Those are the upper middle scopes as far as money goes except nightforce very expensive. There are a couple of scopes out there that are not as expensive but are very good. One comes to mind called a Super Sniper from SWIFT my friend has one and ill tell you the truth I like it. He paid about $300 Good luck

i was told by a G&F guy about 4 years ago that you can put out salt licks before the hunting season starts but even that is up in the air subject to interpretation by the officer out in the field (did not know what that meant at the time but i guess he meant cow salt licks vs salt pellets ) but you can not hunt over them (salt licks) once the season starts that goes for any hunt or any game.
