joeybari replied to seek100plus's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Nice post 5 years ago in 5B I was sitting on a rock eating and about 30 yards a way I saw a deer running my way once it reached 20 yards away I could see that it was chasing a coyote the chase came as close as 10 yards away Two years ago in 36c I glassed up a MNT lion come down from the top of Diablo with a fawn in its mouth great show -
thank you for the info

Anyone else has an opinion about this hunt im fishing for info Sorry
-
That’s the way to go One good way to start with the scouting trip is take the main roads and get lost of course mark were you are going but as far as that unit I would start with going south east of the Patagonia Mts coming up the back side of the mt and work you self north

i seen that twice in 10 years of going there

I hunted that unit last year the October hunt and I was successful. I put in for that unit again for the late Nov and early Dec hunt and I drew a tag I can say only what I experienced last year and I am going to compare in general it to other units that I a have hunted in the past it’s a mixed bag. First I guess what I need to say is right off the back is IT’S not the unit it’s the hunters approach to the unit. I hear a lot of hunters that say I drawn for this and that unit and it was not good and then you ask them well have you ever hunted that unit are you familiar with hunting Coues deer the answer is always NO. With a big grin on my face I say you’re right. It just gets me so mad when I hunter gets drew of a tag and does no home work on the unit what a waste of a tag. Don’t get me wrong I not talking about only scouting the unit (which is the best way) bcs I understand that all of us have families, jobs and over all busy scandals. But there other means to get info one way is exactly what you are doing gathering info this in my mind is the one most valuable tool that a modern day Coues deer hunter has. So that being said Unit 35 b is a very good unit there are Coues deer all over the unit if you look in the G&F website there is a good description of the deer in the unit As far as access there are sign that says privet land don’t go unless the have permission. But there is accesses to the Cllo hills and Patagonians mnts. Start with the roads that are traveled heavily and go from their and if you are worried about other hunters then the best advice I can give you is go out there with a good map from map world or world wide maps they have maps of the different units. Up in the Patagonians Mnt is a hard place to glass what I did was not use my 15x56 I use a lower powered glass and looked under trees shrubs you name it. Cllo hills you can glass like any other unit but its still a bit harder bcs of the different trees and vegetation You can hunt over water but I think bcs of the high elevation (more rain) the deer are getting there water from there food so they are not going as often as any other unit (in General Coues barley drink water) As far as illegal’s I did not see any when scouting or hunting I did not even see trails or the garbage that they leave around not sure but I thing the Patagonians are a hard mnt to walk over. Or It just may be that the spot that I was hunting a not a corridor for them. Anyway have fun and good luck

You got a tag for one of the best units for Coues deer You can’t go wrong with any mnt you glass in that unit Be aware of posted property and be respectful If you’re good at glassing and have good optics you will see allot of good size bucks I love that unit there are good places to camp One down fall is the illegal’s good luck
