I guess the same question should be asked for the next hunt after the bow hunt
-
I guess this is a massage for those that just got done with your 2009 archery bull elk hunt (I hope you were all successful). Was or has the rut starting a little later this year I think this has been happening for the past 5 years any insight would be helpful for those that were there this year.
-
So im not one to believe the big hoopla about global what ever but I even herd from a G&F officer say that is the factor for the delay in the start of the rut
-
I seen and experienced that two years ago, the only reason a bring it up is bcs I had a tag about 6 years ago and the rut was in full swing the day of the hunt two years ago on my dads hunt it seemed it took about 4 days for the elk to get going on the rut. I wonder if the game and fish are aware of this and if they have any ideas.

You’re on the right track As far as hunting over water holes during your hunt I would not put more then a day or two into it bcs you have a late hunt and there is a lot of moisture in the food that they are eating and the bucks are in the rut not thinking about water and food. You can try to position yourself so that when you glass you maybe able to see that water hole at different times of the glassing process. That being said glass glass glass that is key. Most Coues deer hunters that are successful use height powered glass. 10*50 is a good start but 12*56 or 15 * 56 are a bit better. Good clear binos are very helpful to see our small gray deer. A tripod is also key and extremely helpful. The lighter weight ones are nice so that if you’re walking a distance to your spot you won’t be dead tried before the hunt starts. As for trying to finger out what Coues deer or doing good luck I don’t think anyone really knows for sure. So many ideas out there and they are all right but is hard to put the finger on the one thing they do all the time day in and day out. I think that is what the allure to Coues deer hunting is try to finger out Your hunt, your unit, your style, your strategy. Good luck Dollar amounts $ Binos $200 to $2500 Tripod $50 to $450 Tripod head $25 to $300 Gun $150 to skies the limit Scope $150 to $2900 or more Clothing $60 to $500 Pack filled $50 to $500 pack water food knife ………. Range finder $100 to $500 Bullets $15 to $60 GPS $300 to $500 Gas $100 to $500 Camping EQ $55 to $2000 Coues deer in your truck priceless Wife finding out what you really spent on your hunt instead of her DEADLY

That is the same thing that happened last year by 6b. Bulls are rutting latter in the season my friend ended up getting a bull the last day of the bow hunt. The elk did start to rut slowly in the middle for the bow hunt it’s as if the hunt should start in the middle of the week instead. I think that has been happening for the pass few years

i think it took to much time the Decision need to be made alot faster but i glad it was done -
That is the way to go (North West). Its a good unit there is some big bucks but just like others said put in some scouting time or if time is a prob you can do what my dad does every year because he’s old and lazy go to Map World get the unit map pick out the highest elevations in the unit go two days before the hunt and find a spot and glass and stay at that spot for the duration of the hunt and maybe just like him get a 90 or better every year luck son of a gun he has been doing that for years and years and every year he pulls it off love the old man he just laughs at me every year. As a joke I put in a different unit every season to see if I could stomp him never works. At the same time I scout, trail cam, salt licks you name it countless hours of fun he just does what he does and rubs it in my face

Does anyone have some good advice on hunting mountain lion I have seen them glassing for coues always a plus I read and heard using a fox pro is a very good way Also hear that dogs are the way to go since my dogs are not trained for that I'm sure this option is very expansive. When is the season for them? Any info is greatly appreciated.
