Pup's first pheasant hunt
jonesface replied to jonesface's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
A few months ago the question was asked: For over 20 years I've hunted quail without a dog. I would get birds without a dog but I never limited in one day. I've found having a dog you will be more successful than without.(Especially when it comes to Mearns) For one, I find all of my cripples. In the past I would go to a new area and walk around and not see a thing. I would think there wasn't any quail in this new area. I'm not saying the quail are always there but I also think I was walking past a lot of birds that were holding tight in cover. I have found going out on this last trip, if I didn't have a dog I would have walked past a lot of birds that were holding in cover. For instance, today after one of the coveys busted I stood there and watched exactly where they landed. There was dirt all around the thorny brush they landed in so I kept my eye on that area as Ellie and I walked to it. I had Ellie check it out and she just walked away from the brush. I knew the birds were in there so I had her come back and smell it again. Again she gave it a courtesy sniff but walked away. I then started kicking the brush to see if I could flush anything out. Nothing.. All of a sudden Ellie locks up on point about 20 yards from the brush. I walk towards her and just before I get to her the covey flushes. I never saw the birds escape from the brush. I could have easily walked past these birds if it wasn't for her. Here are some pics of today's success. -

Thanks! The best part was not pulling cactus out of the Lewis Dog boots every trip out. -

What barrel length?
jonesface replied to Coues assassin's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
If you're going to hunt ducks with it I'd get a 28". If it was just quail I'd do a 26". But with a semi auto your receiver will be longer than a O/U so a 28" will probably be more like a 30". -
Springer spaniels

My dad has always had Springers so I've been around that breed for many years. He lives in Utah and uses them for pheasant hunting. They are good dogs. -
We recently got a brittany pup. She just turned 12 weeks old and she has picked up quail hunting quickly. I've been working with her everyday and it is amazing to watch her at such a young age find quail that I have hidden in the backyard. She points good but needs a little more work on giving me back the bird. Well I took her out for her first quail hunt this past weekend and she was phenomenal! The gun didn't spook her, she found downed birds and she pointed like a champ. I'm just in shock at such a young age how well she is doing. Here are some pics of this past weekend. Notice the last photo that she is pointing at the quail. See if you can find the quail. I can't wait til next season!

Scalies for the first time!
jonesface posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I was able to make it down south this weekend and connect on some scaled quail for the first time. It was a lot of fun. I think those things like to run more than gambles do. Very beautiful birds. I saw a lot of waterfowl as well but don't have my migratory bird stamp or federal stamp. Here are some pics of the birds. -

Coues assassin anywhere around Tucson in the 3500 to 4500 elevations is scaled quail country. It seems they like that grassy mesquite country best. I found most of my birds in the 70% grass 30% mesquite/ocotillo/prickly pear. They do like to run which makes it difficult to find them in that taller grass. They do not respond to a quail call like gambles do but blowing into a hawk call will cause them to freeze up and not run as much. Good luck and PM me if you needed more advice. -
Awesome pics! Thanks for sharing.

Went to Apache last Saturday from 9am to 7pm. It was snowing in the morning on the way there and stayed cloudy pretty much all day. It looked like a flash flood was coming through Pine Cove and Waterdog area. The water was chocolate brown from Box bay to Waterdog. We didn't have any bites til about 5pm. They were still out on the main points in about 25ft of water and water temp. was 52. The cold front made them pretty inactive but I bet after this week things will start picking up again.

Good job again. These bucks are well earned bucks.

I have fished there numerous times. There are so many lakes and streams up there you could spend months fishing them. I think just about every stream you drive by has trout in them. I just got back from Utah this past week and caught some nice Brooks out of Navajo Lake. PM me if you want more info on the Boulders. Here is a few pics from Navajo Lake.

Johnny Stewart Attractor II call
jonesface replied to makaio333's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
I used this call back in the day before I bought a REAL electronic caller. I called in 1 coyote with it. It is nice to get the sound away from you but there isn't much of a selection of sounds. I would get some good mouth calls to get the volume out and then maybe try this as a coaxer. When you turn this up load it sounds very distorted. (Heavy Metal) If you're in thick country it might work OK. My 2cents. -
WOW Thats cool

My Predator hunt and a question for all

Your right 5. No I didn't shoot any. This is right in town. I have been told by G&F we have coyotes in downtown Phoenix. -
My Predator hunt and a question for all
jonesface replied to Ernesto C's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
I have wondered the same thing. What I have found is the more food you have in an area the more coyotes. (Rabbits, Ducks, Veg, Cats ect...) I know an area that is 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile see how many coyotes you see in this area. As long as there is food, water and cover they will be there and if you kill them more will come to take their place. I also agree with Tontotom with the quickest way to ruin an area is showing tons of people it. These honey hole areas will continue to produce year after year and they are hard to find. Enjoy it. Good job taking care of some coyotes. -
Went out this morning and the 1st stand called in a dark coyote with a large white tip on its tail. He was call shy and circled down wind about 150yrds. I had to stand up and try to make a shot but missed and he was gone. Second stand as soon as we got out of the truck, coyotes were howling and yipping all around us. I thought this should be good. We called and nothing came in. 3rd and 4th stand nothin. 5th stand had one sneak in on my right. There was a palo verde tree between me and him and I tried shooting through the branches and missed him.( I couldn't believe I missed that close, we are talking 10-15ft away) 6th stand had another come straight into me and I got trigger happy and missed him. I told my buddy maybe my gun got knocked off. SO he used my gun the next stand( #7) We had one come in within 5 min. She stopped right in front of us about 60 yrds out and Connor drops her right there. I guess I got a little excited today and educated some coyotes for the rest of you. Im still going to take my gun out to the range.( It cant be me )

Good Job. I had a day like this about a month ago and it was awesome! Lots of shootin and lots of fun.

I took a buddy out this morning from work who hasn't killed anything ever. He wanted to go varmint hunting with me so I let him use my rifle and I ran the camcorder. 1st stand called in a bobcat which he shot. Second stand had two foxes coming in and he unfortunately missed both. We made a 3rd stand with no luck and that was it for this morning. He is now hooked. It was a lot of fun.

I told him it usually isn't like this. We just had a really lucky day.

Good Job on those foxes!
