This Elk hunt was a blast, we had 6 out of 7 tags filled by day 4!!!!! with the7th tag filled on day 6. I can honestly say some of the best family memories are made during elk season. Not only did I get to chase bulls in the peak of the rut, I got to share quality time with family and friends. My wife and I were able celebrate my oldest son's 5th birthday in camp this year!!!! We really take pride in knowing he has had celebrated 3 birthday's in elk camp in his short life from his 2nd, to his 3rd and now his 5th. We also pride myslef in knowing our youngest son who is 3, has been to elk camp at 1 and now 3 years old. Another pride of mine is my wife, who recently purcharsed her first bow. I never tried to force the sport of archery onto her, but to my surprise, she came to me after a summer bow shoot and asked if we could get her a bow. She not only got her first bow (BowTech, Diamond), she is a natural at it. She has great form and is shooting better than some men I know. Way to go Kelly!!!!! I was able to harvest my bull late in the morning of day two, when I caught him walking to his bed. My bull with my two boys and my brothers bull The five bulls Our boys My wife, with her bow and a group she made Some horses who found our camp -Ryan

Had some trouble posting these two pictures. My bull where he fell Me with my two boys -Ryan

No 340, I would say around 310 315. Short fronts, good 3rds and 4th's but one week 5th and his width kills him. Shooter bull for sure but those are the bulls you need to pass to harvest a monster. Ryan

Opening day found my brother and I in a spot well before day light trying to find a buck we had scouted in the summer months. As day light came, we only found a smaller buck, so we bailed off the mesa and headed to another. We spent all afternoon hiking out some rolling cuts and draws, looking for a bedded buck. After miles of hiking and no bucks, we set up on a high point and began glassing the miles of mesa infront of us. My brother Regan, spotted a herd approximately 4 miles away, however at that distance we were unable to see what the herd consisted of. We decided to roll the dice, hoping the herd had a good buck in it. The first 2 miles into our stalk was nice and overcase, leaving us surrounded by storm clouds in all directions. The last 2 miles of our stalk was filled with heavy rain and alot of lightning and thunder. I remember Regan telling me only crazy people would be stalking Antelope in a rain storm filled with lightning and thunder, I guess that makes us "Those people" . As were neared the herd, we had to crawl out of sight in a near by brush line to get a good view of the partially bedded heard. After an hour or so, Regan finally spotted the buck stand up to stretch his legs. I was unable to get ready before the buck decided to bed back down. We had to wait what felt like hours, till the buck finally stood back up at which time my rifle did its job. I had my buck on the ground at 4 pm. I had a great time hunting with family and friends. -Ryan

I don't know much about this unit, however I would suggest the following. -Camp in a location that will allow you to have good access throughout the unit. -Don't be affraid to spend the first few days of your hunt (If scouting trips are out) and find where the bulls are hanging out. -Get a map and learn the roads/terrian from the comfort of your home. I hope some of this helps. I too will be unit Bulls with my bow this year, good luck and share some pics when your done! -Ryan

I haven't seen this thread pop up so if it has just let me know. I have mixed feelings about all this....... I recently became informed by Game and Fish the Coconino National Forest has begun their ROAD & CAMPING RESTRICTIONS. Forest Service and Game & Fish are advising the following. *Each person must bring themselves up to speed on the closed roads and the roads that do not allow camping - Roads will NOT have signs posted (Road Closed) - They expect people to know if they are traveling on a open or closed road. *Units 5bN and 5bS will NOT allow hunters to use a motor vehicle to travel off road to obtain your downed elk. *Maps can be obtained from Forest Service Offices on the Coconino. -Ryan

IMO last thursday and Friday when most people had their CC's hit was the initial draw for 2012. With that said, I have a buddy who put a hold on his cc that thursday due to loosing it and then later re-opening it late that same day. Well the damage was already done in that 8 hour window, his bank told him that G&F had ran his card 3 times while his card was down for 114 dollars. He made some phone calls and was told he would be getting an answer from the director in a couple of days, he recieved that phone call two days ago. The answer he recieved was not good and was basically told to try again next year. With all that said, if my buddy just had that happend two days ago, Im betting he's not the only one and G&F are trying their best to fill all the last minute openings before they can post the results. Everyone who has had thier cards hit and people who are just now getting hit, congrats! Soon we will know what we got drawn for. -Ryan

Casey, I just filled up for 105 on my Diesel today.....And thats after it just went down 20cents! Gona have to work alots of off duty to fund my scouting this summer.

My 114 and 77.50 has already been taken out of my account. If G&F try and say I'm not drawn, they are going to owe me more than what they took out! -Ryan

I am wandering what others use for a backpack that will hold their rifle? I know some go with the Eberlestock but lets face it, Im not sure I want to drop that much money into a pack. Is their any other packs that are less in value, but maybe just as good? -Ryan
