I'm with Will K on this one, two orange and a black. I also use flo orange wraps that really help to find the arrows.

From what I have seen the helical and whisker biscuits don't always work well together. The fletching already have a little bit of friction to them when passing through the biscuit. The helical makes even more friction between the two and can actually start to tear the whiskers up. It probably depends on the brace height of the bow as well but I am not sure. I have seen a lot of guys complain about the accuracy of their bow and you look at the whisker biscuit and it is all torn up. When we put drop away rests on these bows it usually fixes the problem. I does sound like Elkhuneter is using one with no problems however so it must not always be the case.

All my life my family and I have gone to Greer to camp and fish. I think this is one of the most beautiful places in Arizona and it makes me sick to see those pictures. I pray for all the families that live there and/or own property there.

2011 Archery AZ Black Bear Hunt
briant_az replied to CouesBuckhunter's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
are we going to get to see this story in bow and arrow? hahaha I saw the story about yours and your fathers coues deer not that long ago and new you both looked familiar from somewhere. Congratulations on a nice bear! -
are you interested in selling the doinker by itself?

I just recently bought some of the slick trick mags. and I have to say these broadheads shoot really well. I am hoping to go out today and shoot them at some farther distances but at 30 yards in the backyard I cut the vanes off two arrows. They are not hitting the exact same spot as my field points but they are only about a half inch to the left. I usually have to move my sight a lot more than that.

WOW Taht was amazing. I wish I could do bone out a deer that fast. He got a ton of meat off that deer also.

I wasn't sure what area to make this post, if this is the wrong place can someone let me know and I will find out how to move it. Tuesday morning I shot a coatimundi while out javelina hunting. I have never seen these little guys and when the herd of pigs ran off and scared them I had to shoot one. Unfortunately I didn't get a pig but it was not for a lack of trying, they were just smart enough to run over the hill behind the brush instead of out in the open like this guy. Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone out there had a full mount of one of these guys and what taxidermist mounted it. If anyone knows a taxidermist that does coati mounts really well please let me know also. Thanks! As a side note this is the first animal that I harvested with my new bow. I could only be happier if I could have hit the 2 javelina that I missed at half the distance.

I personally think that you get a better trigger in the savage. It has been some time since I have seen one of the icons but I think they have the same trigger as the ventures. The only thing that I don't like about the trigger in these guns is how small and thin it is. To me this is a big deal only because it is different from all the other guns that I own. I still think that they are great guns. If some one made an aftermarket trigger for the Venture I would have bought one already. The accu-trigger is a great trigger and super easy to adjust. I think if it were me I would probably go that route. Like everyone else is also telling you if I had my choice I would buy a 700. The triggers are decent out of the box but if you put in a timney or jewel trigger you will have a great shooting gun!

One thing that I always look for on a website is a search box. Yours is easy to find and in an appropriate place. I have been on some websites that do not have this function and it drives me nuts trying to find things. I think the web site looks awesome and am kind of jealous; I wish my website looked like that. Anyway I also agree about the menus. Nothing is more frustrating than the drop down menus that keep going and going. When you accidentally move off the menu you have to start all over and it gets very annoying.

I think that it all depends on the situation. I shot over a whitetail this year at 500 yards and I have never seen a deer run so fast. The day before I spooked two bucks and got a quick shot at them as they ran up a hill. My heart was pounding and I could not steady the cross hairs on that deer long enough to get a good shot at him. I still tried though. I am not saying that I am right or wrong for doing so but I did it and I am okay with admitting it. That shot was 300 yards and I was kneeling which was half of the problem. Anyway I missed that buck twice and the other buck once before they finally went over the ridge. I also have to throw in that these bucks were standing still, broadside when I shot and not running while I was shooting at them. They new something was wrong, they busted me long before I even knew they where there but they didn't run off nearly as fast as the deer that had no idea where I was or even what happened. Now something that I learned from this situation was that I need to practice shooting in more than the prone position. I think it is also about what you learn in the field that tells a lot about you. If I had practiced kneeling shots at farther distances then I probably would have come home with a really nice buck last year. I will be practicing from all sorts of shooting positions this year so that this will not happen to me again. I think that what Mr. Jonathan said is true, this is more about how we conduct ourselves than it is an ethics issue, after all we are ultimately killing an animal. I think that it's hard for some people to realize that. There were also a lot of shots taken in that video that I would have never even thought about taking. I don't care how big a buck is or at what distance he is, if all I have to shoot at is his butt, he is going to live to see another day. I would never ever take that shot.

Why We shoot deer in the wild
briant_az replied to msgbarney's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Both of those stories are great!!! Just goes to show you that sometimes our ideas are better left as ideas and not actions. I have to say I would have paid money to see any 4 people in a car with a bobcat! -
+1 I have taken a deer and a javelina to von hansen's. They make a great jalapeno and cheese summer sausage that even my wife loves. If you just have them do the basic cuts its not too expensive but once you start getting into other things the price goes up quick.

I have been gone for the last 3 days and heard about it last night when I got home. What part of the freeway did this happen on?

I don't know if anyone will remember but a couple of months ago I posted a topic on this site about a coues buck that I missed during the archery season. Since that day all I have thought about is these little whitetail and how I wanted to get one sooooo bad. I decided that I would pick up a leftover tag down south and hope for the best. Opening day a buddy,Chad and myself are glassing for about an hour before we see any deer. The first deer that I see is a buck, even though I didn't know it until he told me. The problem was he only had one antler. I watched him for about 20 minutes and decided that I was not going to shoot a one antlered buck for my first. About 10 minutes later I decided that I could not pass on this buck and I want to take him. I try to find him in the last place that I saw him and all we can find is a doe and a fawn. Oh well I guess it just wasn't meant to be. That afternoon we decide that we are going to drive around the unit a little since we are not really familiar with it and try to find a good spot to glass from. As we are driving down the road all of a sudden it starts to turn really bad. We decide to get out of the truck and walk up the road a little ways and make sure we can make it. As we are walking back to the truck we are talking and decide that this is as good an area as any to glass. All of a sudden Chad yells right there! On the other side of this huge wash these two bucks must have been watching us the whole time and we had no idea that they were even there. The one thing that I learned from this hunt is never get out of the truck without your gun. I run back to the truck grab my gun, load a round in the chamber and he says shoot the first one he is a big buck. The only shot that I have is kneeling and it was 300 yards. I shoot at the big buck twice and miss both times. Then the little buck steps out and I miss him too and they run over the ridge. I am pissed and ready to go after them, the only problem is the wash is so big and the sides of it are so steep it would take us too long to find a spot to cross to chase them. We decided that it would be pointless to try to get to the other side. We hike to the top of one of the ridges and glass the area until dark. Day 2 was pretty uneventful until about 10 mins before dark. I spot a deer on a ridge 500 yards away and Chad says he is a spike. I get all set up and he turns broadside, I squeeze the trigger and shoot right over his back. He runs straight down the mountain he is on and because there is another ridge between us we never see him again. Day 3 is windy and we decide it is time to head home. I have Monday and Tuesdays off from my everyday job but I am starting my own pest control company and have to come home to do services. I get everything done that I need to Monday and hope that my wife will let me go Tuesday morning. She says she doesn't care so I call Jake (outdoorrush) and another buddy (Dustin) that works with us. So tuesday morning we get to a spot to glass and 10 minutes in I spot some coyotes running across the mountain. Next place I look I see 3 bucks running the opposite way around the mountain. I tell them I have bucks and we decide that the first one is a really nice buck. The only problem is they just went over the side of the mountain. We make a plan and start to hike around the opposite side of the mountain. When we get to the other side of course there is a bunch of new mountains and no bucks in sight. We spot about 6 does but just cant find the bucks. We start to move around the mountain and all of a sudden we jump up a buck. He is running toward the top of the ridge and Jake tells me it is 200 yards. I am feeling very unconfident after the four misses at the previous bucks so I lay down with my bipod to shoot. I can't get on him before he goes over the ridge. Then he runs up the ridge behind that and Jake tells me he is 400 yards. I can't get on him fast enough and he steps behind a bush. We wait about 5 mins and Jake says I think he bedded down behind that bush. Jake also says that it looked like he might be hurt because he was kind of limping when he went over the first ridge. We wait about an hour and a half and decide that I should just try to get closer. Dustin walks up to the ridge between us and the deer to see if he will move if we try to get closer, he never moves. I follow Dustin to the next ridge and it is a 150 yard shot. After a few minutes the buck sticks his head out the front of the bush and looks right at us, then he backs up and starts to walk out from behind the bush. He stops right behind an ocotillo and I just can't take it anymore. I have a clear shot at his vitals and I shoot. He takes about two steps and I shoot again, he takes two more steps and falls over. I am super happy that I got to shoot this buck. I was hoping for a bigger buck for the first but at least I finally connected. I hit him with the first shot and I am still not sure if I hit him with the second or not. It turned out that someone had shot the deer in the back leg and it was not looking good. I didn't take any meat of that leg and the front leg where the bullet came out was nothing but hamburger. I shot him with a 168gr berger bullet in a 280 remington, the deer went down fast but man did that bullet ever do a number on the meat. I want to thank Jake and Dustin both for being there and helping me with my first whitetail. Thanks to Chad too for helping me the first 3 days. Maybe next year I will practice shooting farther distances kneeling instead of only practicing prone. Anyway sorry for the long story and here is what everyone clicked on this post for.........pictures!

I had the same thing happen to me on my Javelina hunt this year. I was sitting in a blind and I was in the shade and I was just freezing. I saw a pig coming to my right and as soon as he passed behind a bush about ten yards in front of me I tried to draw. Absolutely could not drawn my bow all the way back. I ended up shooting that same pig but man was I frustrated after that.

I drew 33/37B tag for archery. Can't wait till January 1!!

That top picture is Jake's (outdoorrush). He works there

Those are all great bucks but that last one is a brute for sure! congrats to all hunters!

I would have to say muley. I think that if someone shot this deer and the game warden came across them, it would be really hard to explain that you thought it was a wt because of its mannerisms. Just my $.02

Pictures added tonight. The serial number is blurred in the photos but it is not actually scratched or anything on the rifle.
