HUGE CONGRATS!!! Great story, I really enjoyed it!
-
For me, I don't shoot enough to be comfortable taking that kind of a shot. This past rifle season I passed on a 640yd shot at a very nice deer. I opted to try and cut the distance in half. Time I got over there he was gone. I never saw him again. Oh well, that's the way it goes. For my own personal comfort level shooting at that deer would have been an attempt to hit him. That's something I'm not comfortable doing. For the guy's that practice at those ranges and are confident in their ability. That's their comfort level, and I don't see anything wrong with it. But people have to be honest with themselves. My only problem is with the guy's that are going to want in the "long range shooters club", and be out looking to take shots beyond their own personal ability. That's not directed at anyone. I don't know anyone here well enough. But I think we all know impressionable people read what is written here….

It's not cheap, but with the amount of hunters out there with $2000 bucks in Swaros around their neck, I don't think it's too far out there. Pretty cool idea...

Don't think I'll make it out opening weekend. I need to do some work on my truck. But after that I have a monster I saw in rifle season that I'm hoping to find again.

How do you like the Nikon's? I borrowed some 10x42 swaros for one day last weekend and loved them. Bottom line is I just can't come up with that kind dough anytime soon, and the binos I have now are terrible.

That one pic looks like your scouting a new trail! I thought that was you on the road. I got up there Wednesday night and set up camp in the rain Thursday I drove out in my 4-runner for T-day dinner, and drove back up. I was hunting with a good friend since high school and my dad. My dad aint getting around so good in Coues country anymore, so we stuck pretty close to the roads. Actually, we were glassing right off the roads. That being said we didn't see many bucks. Quite a few does and a couple spikes. I'm doing my best to keep my dad going, but he's trying to quit on me. He just can't walk that country much anymore. I think next year we are going to put him in for Mule Deer, and me for Whitetail. I think that will work out pretty well, and make for a longer deer season too. So dang, 580yds, wow! What are you shooting? I'm shooting a Weatherby Vanguard 30-06, but I don't practice enough to feel confident in the long shots like that. My last two Coues were at 270 and 240. -Pat

WOW! And at 520yds. What are you shooting?

Well, I new you had to be around somewhere! What's up Rich? Did you sell your crawler? I sold mine. Got tired of busting parts and spending money. To be honest, it was getting boring anyway. Got a pretty decent runner I'm building up for a hunting rig. Nice job one the deer! I'm sure I'll see you around. Later, Pat

New to website, hunting 33/37B in January with son
azyota replied to CAelknuts's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
So far I have used my J-13 3 times on herds I busted out. Once a few of the pigs stopped, and I missed a shot. The other 2 times they ran the other way FAST. I would say it's worth a try if they are running anyway. Edit: I did use the J-13 to call a Coyote in to 9yds once while archery pig hunting. He's done! -
Too bad you missed the bigger of the two but that's still a nice deer! And you got to share it with your son. I don't think there is much to compare to a running shot especially when your a kid. I remember hunting with my dad when I was about your sons age. My dad took me and a neighbor kid out to 34A back when it had more deer than illegals. He had us throwing rocks down the cut's trying to bust them out and sure enough, we busted one out. My dad took three running shots and missed them all. My buddy had never seen anything like that said "that was mighty fine shooting". My dad said "yeah, but I missed him". My buddy says "yeah but that was still mighty fine shooting". That was over 40 years ago, and still one of my most vivid memories of hunting with my dad. We hunted 33 this year and never put it together, but we saw a lot of Coyotes too. Time to go bust some of them... Congrats on that deer and a lifelong memory for your son.

Great story, thanks! My father in law lives in NM. I'm hoping to put in with him next year. Don't know where yet, I need to do some road tripping between now and then. I really like the Silver City area. I used to race mountain bikes and raced up in the woods past Pinos Altos. really nice up there! Good luck to you on the church mission.

Congrats, nice looking bull. What unit?

It was 6B. We saw a lot of spikes and rag horns. And a quick look at a pretty nice Bull, but it was a real quick look at about 300yds and he was Running!

Hey all, Don't know if this is the right place for it, but this is my first post here and I wanted to say hey. I just got back from an archery Elk hunt over the past two weekends. I didn't have a tag myself, but got to go along with some friends. We saw some nice bulls, but never could close the distance on them. Here is a little video I shot this past Saturday morning. We were closing in on three bulls that were bugling, and this guy came walking our direction. We passed him up in hopes of somthing a littel nicer before the end of the season. My buddies are camped for the duration. I think as the end of season gets closer, this guy won't get the same break. Anyway, heres that video, enjoy! I really like catching them bugle.
