3 of us brothers Took advantage of a an extra day off work to take part of tbe kids & dad & rode part of the baldy trail up to the look out . If you haven't taken the time lately to get your family together , there's no time like now . You won't regret it .
-
Bill - what I call tbe lookout is about 1/2 way up , the trail tops out in a really rocky point were you can see for miles .... It's not the top .... A few days latter my dad took a couple of my boys & went back & rode about 3/4 of the way but then the blow downs were so terrible they got tired of fighting them & finally just turned around , the FS hadn't maintained that upper half since the winter or who knows when .
-
Craigk - if your dream is to let them ride a horse come by the house & ill take them for I ride , If its to own horses I got 3 ill sale ya

first NM antelope tag ! -
a pair of good rubber irrigation boots and he can put a toe on one end of the skull and hold it down against the driveway and not have to hold it in his hand... plus keeps the socks and shoes dry..... also a good rubber apron keeps all the brains and tissue of his clothes.... the aprons are $15 and well worth it.... just be careful not to hit the boot with the washer on full stream it will create a hole in the boot....

if you kept feeding it good, then no it would not be "tough" the next fall it would be great eating, because it would be that much bigger, and marbled out that much more.... the key would be the feed..... to many people feed just enough to keep it alive if that makes since, but to add weight and marbling and get them nice and fat you have to feed them good.... so an extra year of good feed and it would be amazing dinner fair .... and would probably even be better.... the first year they grow bone..... the second year it would be all weight and thickness.... most home growers butcher at the year or year and half mark do to expense.... and don't get me wrong they turn out great.... but that extra 6-8 months on the back end is when they don't grow "up" as much but start filling out....so if you keep them that extra time, that's when you really get to see the weight put on....

first come first choice on calves.... so yes take your pick on the gender..... yes all the bull calves will be castrated..... we do that when they are a month old or so.... yes I think 2 calves do better then one by themselves..... I typed a whole page on this in the fall when I posted the other I had for sale, on why I think that they do, you could look it up. but when two are together they seem to do better then one...... just my experience.... these calves will stay on there mother tell fall, then weaned then you just finish how you want them done.... if you've never had home grown beef your missing out..... but be warned if you ever have it , you wont want to go back

was down javelina hunting a few years back , and came across a really nice black angus calf caught in the fence, bauling for his momma, was surely going to be coyote, bobcat, or lion food by morning, we cut it loose and went on about our business, hope the rancher appreciated it

anyone interested in some beef calves to finish out . I've got over a dozen calves..... and need to get rid of some..... they are still on there mothers on pasture, need to get them off of the mommas so mommas have time to recoup for this springs crop of babbies..... these are very nice calves NOT sale barn, runts, orphans or anything of the kind, these are raised by me, from my cows they get a vaccination shot when they are a few weeks old, other then that NO growth or hormone shots. all are from a great black angus bull who's mother was registered. about 3/4 are form black angus cows, the others are crosses from herford cows with my black angus bull. ALL are great calves, and all born this spring, mostly in march.... giver r take 3 weeks ..... they will be in the 550-600 pnd range for a few of the latter ones maybe a tad smaller and the earliest big steers maybe a tad over..... I do NOT have a scale.... take them and finish them the way you want on grass or corn/grain they are / will make excellent beef ...... $800 a piece..... come pick out the one you want.

i'm located in taylor, and yes in my experience they do better with a companion, I have no idea if goat, sheep , hogs etc... are the same, but I know of about 10 different people here in town that buy them when they are little ( 200-300) and all of them them raise 2 together.... I don't know why... but they just seem to do better, ( not that you cant raise one on it's own ) as far as acreage, IF your are grain / corn finishing them then you don't want a very big place, you want a smaller pen, so they don't have to walk very far, and walk off what you are putting in them, you want them to have water, and all they can eat and not run around much.... if you are letting them grow by just pasture and not feeding them, then I really don't know how big a place you'de need, I have about 20 mother cows and a bull, but I have grass/alfalfa fields I rotate them through as well as state lease land.... but you want them on good grass and not eating weeds, sage brush, etc.... you want them on the best feed you can get them on to make them taste the best and gain the most... also they all have already been casturated, we do that when they are about a month old, there are NO bulls, just heifers and steers... I think I answered your questions... thanks

that's a new "form" with the popular form companies, every year they try to come up with the newest and latest for taxidermist to add things to provide to there customers, and this is one of the newest things that they have come up with and the form like that comes in many species now, another option " money maker" the form companies/designers have started providing as an option for your trophies.....

Just in time for turkey season . My 15 year old sons goulds, my 5 bearded Merriams , both posing for the attention of a smoke phase hen . No idea why it turned the last 2 sideways .
-
yea the goulds is banded with a NM band....... pretty cool.......to bad NM game and fish turkey biologist would never return my calls to get the history behind it... my son shot it with his bow at 34 yards...... there are 5 color phases of turkey , the 1- regular "normal " color, 2-albino - very rare for true albino, 3- melinistic ( black )4- the smoke/grey, and 5- erytristic ( red phase) ..... I've seen 4 of the smoke-grey phase.... 2 in az and 2 in NM, 1 gobbler and 3 hens..... yea jeff that jackalope has been sitting on the shop bench waiting for ya...

Congrats to you and Cole both that is an awesome deal . Now if you'll just give up teaching too you'll have all kinds of time :) just teasing, they need good teachers. took my oldest down to a bull riding a few weeks ago and watched him win his first bull riding buckle, not quite like a state championship, but too see your kids grow up and see there accomplishment's is about as good as it gets.

Cow Bison, How Much Freezer/Cooler Space Do I Need?
tomgobbler replied to Heat's topic in Buffalo Hunting
10 will be plenty enough , ROUGHLY 60% will be hanging weight and 60% of that will be wrapped meet depending on how fat, how much trim you take off, debone etc.... for easy math 1000 lb animal hanging will be 600, take home 360 lbs.... i'de expect from a bison the yield would be a little less then the 60%..... -
were ya located ? i'de take them if the trip wasn't a killer
