well my brother called me and wanted me to take him out coyote calling, he has never shot a coyote and has had the itch. he's went with me before, and for what ever reason has never got the job done, last winter i took him out and had a nice dog in to 30 yards, me and my 7 year old was sitting under a cedar, i had my 223 on the coyote, but was waiting for my brother to shoot, and he never did so i finally shot the dog and ask why he didnt shoot and i guess from his angle were the coyote stopped he was behind a tree. Well anyway we went out this morning and very first stand i had him set up about 30 feet up and to my left with my 12 gauge, and i sat back with my 223, we set up on a nice rolling cedar/pushed cedar draw, you could see for quite a long ways, tall yellow grass, it just looked great, right at daylight, anyway about 2 minutes into the stand i could see a coyote coming at us from about 800 yards out, i tried and tried to get my brother's attention and never could, i just kept watching the dog come in, so i got my 223 on him and had him in the cross hairs for a long time. anyway at about 40 yards my brother finally seen him and raised my shotgun, and the coyote came to a dead stop (he was aon a pretty good run) and looked at him, and i waited and waited, and waited for him to shoot, i couldnt figure what the heck was going on, and finally he shot and rolled the dog. his very fist coyote. It was pretty cool, but i guess the safety was on and so he pulled the trigger then pulled it harder and harder and finally figured out how to take it off and roll him, he was lucky i had patience this morning! anyway before the day was done we ended up with 3 dogs and 1 cat, hope you enjoy tommy

ok here's a story on one of the cats. i had this particular trap on a drag cause it was close to a 2 track road (and i had a trap stolen out of the exact spot the year before) so i walk up to were the trap is supposed to be, and it is gone, so i'm thinking alright i got a coyote, so i start following the drag marks and there up the hill 50 yards is a nice bobcat on the end of the drag. Well the drag hook is barely being held by a little tuff of grass, so i run up there and stand on the drag. well now what? i have a snarling cat on 6 foot of chain with me standing on the end and a 4' catch pole in my hand, so the cat is 2 foot out of reach. My 4 year old is runninn the line with me that day and is standing 10' away with BIG eyes watching this cat snarl and jerk and run in circles around me. i usually carry my 22 pistol, but had forgotten my belt that day so it was still on the dash of my truck, SO now what... do i walk down the chain holding it down with my feet and hope the cat doesnt jerk it out from under my boots, or that he doesnt run back up the chain and into my lap..... or do i bend over and pick up the drag and pull the cat to me until it is close enough... (the cats is really mad and growling at me) once again hopeing he doesnt turn and run towards me up the chain..... i mess with him awhile with nothing between us but the catch pole and never can get quite close enough to get it on him, so i finally ask my son if he can go back to the truck, 50 yards away and can he open the door and crawl in and get my 22 off of the dash (it is in the holster, tied in with the hammer on an empty chamber) so 4 year old son goes back to the truck and a few mintues latter arives with the gun and we put an end to the harry situation...... so that was a little excitement for a few minutes or so, but dont you think that 4 year old will remember that for a long time! take a kid with you and make some memories with them! happy hunting tommy

firstcoues.... i do both, so the ones i'm posting are a mixed bag, some have been trapped and some have been called in. i caught heck on another sight for posting a "trapped" post, so i generally leave that out now..... you wouldnt believe the number of callers that are against trappers..... why? thats like the deer hunter being against the bird hunter, and the bird hunter being against the hound hunters.... it makes no since, but there are a lot of "hunters" out there against trappers.... why? the trapper is never going to trap "all" the animals and the caller is never going to call them all.... but you would be surpised at the number of comments i get against trapping.... so i got tired of it and quite making posts with "trapped" in them.....but to answer your question i do i bunch of both. but here is a story of one of them for ya i had this particular trap on a drag cause it was close to a 2 track road (and i had a trap stolen out of the exact spot the year before) so i walk up to were the trap is supposed to be, and it is gone, so i'm thinking alright i got a coyote, so i start following the drag marks and there up the hill 50 yards is a nice bobcat on the end of the drag. What Is Considered A Big Bobcat?
tomgobbler replied to Hunter X's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
i trap and call a bunch and i weigh generally everything, MOST arizona cats will run between 16-20 pounds or so, but the good toms will go up to about 30 pounds, i had a guy call me yesterday and say he had a 35 + pound cat and wanted to bring it in to my taxidermy shop to have a rug made out of it, so he brought it in and we put it on the scale and it weighed 22 pounds he figured it "shrunk" 15 pounds in the back of his truck..... it was a nice bif tom and and he went on my large stretcher. but they just dont get that big it weight as a general rule. the largest i got last year was 28 pounds, and i think the largest the year before that was 31 pounds, but rarely will they break 35 puonds around here, the one in the video i'de say was a nice tom in the 20-25 pound range, cousefans cant would be around that same weight. Yotes are the same, i have guys all the time call me and say man i just shot a 40 pound yote, and the bring him in and hes about 25-28 pounds..... anyway just my 2 cents worth in all that i weigh each year, they just dont have the weight that most people think they do. tommy -
me and my brother had a really good hunt this weekend down by wilcox/benson hunting with coues84 (shane) Thanks again my friend!!! anyway i glassed up a nice little buck about 800 yards up the mountain and asked my brother if he wanted to go get him and he siad yes, so gave him some directions and sent him on his way, he got up there and NO shot came, i kept wondering what the heck, so i went up there and found him and there was no buck.... so we did some searching and out from under a small little tree on a bare grass hill side across the draw from us we finally got him to get unerved with us being there and he bolted up and across the hill side, at about 300 yards my brother but the hammer down and down he went. nice 3x3, his biggest to date around 65 inches or so, he was happy. so thanks to shane coming up to us after we got him down and helping to quarter and pack him out we got him back to the truck a little while latter. Day 2 found lots of glassing and does but no bucks. day three found shane and i glassing a really big mountain range, and about 45 minutes into glassing shane glasses up a doe and a fawn, and about 5 minutes latter i glass up another doe and a faw about 400 yards further around the hill side then the first 2, these deer were around 1200 yards away striaght up the mountian. well i look back a few minutes latter at the first doe and fawn and there are 3 deer instead of the two, and he looks bigger, but was so far away i couldnt tell if he was a buck or not, so shane looks them over with his 20x's and yes not a bad 3 point, so we make a game plan for me to go up the mountain for them, and get to these rocks, and then i should be with in shooting range of them, so i head up the mountain, what seemed like forever but about 35-45 minutes latter i was at "my rocks" and i could not find the buck, i found the 2 sets of does and fawns but no buck, so i radio back down to shane and he tells me the buck tucked up under a little tree and hasnt come out yet. well the does and fawn get nervous and they head for safer places. Still no buck sighting, i glass and glass the little tree and still no deer, well i'm not much for waiting so after about 30 more minutes i said forget this, it could be hours before he stand up on his own. SO i decide to put a shell into the tree trunk, i figured i would have several hundred yards 360 degree of that tree to get a shot at the buck before he got out of sight, so i put one into the trunk at 225 yards and out he came like his tail was afire, he went another 75 yards or so, so now about 300 and he stopped and i tucked a 270wsm right behind his shoulder, shane said he saw him hump up, but with my recoil i didnt see that, and thought i missed, he took off again and stopped about 400 and i put another one in him and planted him there. thinking that was my only hit, but when i got up to him there was 2 nice holes right were they should be. Now one heck of a i hike back with the buck, thanks to my brother and shane for giving me a hand in getting him back..... my biggest coues to date, bot huge, but a nice buck. My "in the filed pictures" are at walmart, will post them latter, these are after i got home, my brothers skinned out and mine just getting ready to get skinned out.

I just got back from taking a trip to wyoming, me and my little brother went. We came back with 4 goats, 1 badger, and one red fox. 1 bow kill, 3 rifle kills and 1 muzzle loader kill. one shot at 310 yards, one shot at 562 yards, one at 275, one at 225 (with the muzzle loader) one at 243, and one at 21 yards (bow) we had an awsome trip. the first role of film just had my buck, the second roll is still at walmart, so will get more pictures latter. tommy

tomgobbler replied to desertsheep's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
Hey Jay, Nice goat, how long is he? i'm off to wyoming on tuesday to thump a few myself, what about a picture of yours? You should see some of the bulls i've been videoing, i've been going out every morning for a week, and have some good one's located, one of my buddies arrowed a 360 bull sat. night, and my cow hunter still hasnt killed, but we're having fun chasing them. well good luck and drop me a line tommy -
trapper, well it is about liek i discribed at first, we take enteries at like 4:00 am sat morning, and give out the rules, and send everyone on there way, then we meet back that evening for check in, we devide the money we take in as entree fees and pay back out like 3 places (depends on amount of entrees) we also go out and collect some door prizes from who ever we can and we give out tickets to everyone that enteres and that evneing we draw for door prizes as well as give out the cash and we have plaques made up as well, we've debated on wither or not to have a 2 day deal or not but for now we've only had the one dayer. its been lots of fun, we had i think 5 teams the first year and then i think it was 14 last year, so hopeing for 20 or more this year as it grows a little. we generally try and have it the around the 1st part of dec. so that most fall hunts are over with and so we miss the "world calling contest" so there ya have it tommy
