last week me and my 8 1/2 year old were out checking my line and i had found a place with some good kit fox sign and i had a couple of small traps in the back of the truck, so i asked my son if he wanted to set his first 2 traps, and what ever he caught would be his, and that i thought he had a good chance of catching a kit fox. So of course he jumped all over the idea, so with a little coaching he put in 2 traps about 10 feet apart and choose a couple of lures out of my supply that he wanted to try, one kind in one hole and the other kind in the other set. So off we went home to tell mom that he had 2 traps out now. Well the very first night that we checked (we had to check at night because i didnt get off of work unitl after dark) we ran the line and i had a BIG 3 legged coyote, he was missing most of his back leg, i have never caught a 3 legged one before and this is my second for this year, kind of wild. Anyway it was a big alpha male, a good one to take out, i'm sure i saved a few antelope fawns form this guy, he was big and strong and fat, and healthy, anyway a little further along i had a big porky pine, ok great now what, how to i get this thing out of the trap, well it was quite comical i'm sure if you were a fly on the wall watching me try and release this proky pine, he was swatting he tail back and forth trying to stick me. i finally was able to pull him to me and hurry and reach down and pull the leavers on the trap and let him go, but i just knew i was going to get an arm full of quils from his tail be fore i managed but thank good ness i lucked out. my son , Trace, thought it was really funny me jumping from this porky pine, while he hed the flashlight and me messing with it, but it all worked out good. then on to his 2 traps, we waled up and the little guy looked at us and you could see his eye shine, boy did my son get excited! his very first check and his very first KIT FOX, we were both pretty excited to say the least, so we both came home with something cool to show mom, but as you can see the smile says it all! I guess i'll have to make some kind of a coffee table and mount this thing and put in it for him, what do you think? hope you enjoy! happy hunting tommy

me and my buddy Wes headed for a place in the hills that we know of for the afternoon hunt. we got there about 3 and started some glassing. we glassed and glassed and glasssed some more and still couldnt find them, but we had good sign and water, so we knew they were there somewhere. about 45 mintues before dark i finally heard the words i'de been waiting all day to hear, "i got em" 1000 foot straight up and 1000 yards away... what you 've got to be kidding.... no, clear at the top of the mountain, as far up as you can go on the ridge line in that saddle, how bad do you want one..... well thats what we came for..... do you have a flashlight i left mine in the truck.... yea i've got a little one in my pack, ok lets go...... so off we went, straight up.... my legs, and lungs were killing me! who's bright idea was this anyway, yours dont you remember, you said you wanted one.... ok yea lets keep moving.....well to make a long story short we finally made it to the top in record book time, but i thought i was going to die right then and there..... so we creap over to the ridge line and look over and fianly spot them after what seemes forever. they were about 100 yards away milling around.... so i sit down and put my bipod up for my muzzle loader, and with the slant of the hill its about 2 inches to short, so i put the legs up on my toes to get it high enough, i was huffing and puffing from the climb, wes says dont miss we dont want to make this climb again, Ok wow no presure, i'm breathing hard, i'm trying to keep the bipod on my toes, and i have one shot, no worries right well i finally get a big one in my cross hairs that doesnt have any little ones by it, and i let'r'fly.... well of course with the recoil and smoke i dont see anything but pigs run ever where...... my buddy says OH yea nice shot! i drilled that pig , high shoulder shot, broke both shoudlers and took out spine. what is crazy though is i shoot a 50 caliber 200 grain bullet, and the exit would was the same size as the entrance, just a small hole, you could'nt of told which was which if you didnt know which way he was facing when i shot, i thought that was odd, anyway it blew right through him and knocked him on his butt. well i gut him really quick and .... its now dark.... the only thing that really saved us was the moon, it was pretty bright friday night, and we could see ok to get down off the mountain... it was quite the trip getting down, it was steep and nasty and now with pig over my shoudler..... well we finally made it down and truck was never such a welcome sight. the big boar was 38 pounds and that was field dressed! Nice good cutters, older big boar, was a good one to get. anyway pictues are at walmart, and my buddy took them in the dark and could hardly see me in the view finder so i hope they turn out, will have to post when i can. well hope you enjoy and good luck to the rest of you pig hunters. tommy

well my brother called me and wanted me to take him out coyote calling, he has never shot a coyote and has had the itch. he's went with me before, and for what ever reason has never got the job done, last winter i took him out and had a nice dog in to 30 yards, me and my 7 year old was sitting under a cedar, i had my 223 on the coyote, but was waiting for my brother to shoot, and he never did so i finally shot the dog and ask why he didnt shoot and i guess from his angle were the coyote stopped he was behind a tree. Well anyway we went out this morning and very first stand i had him set up about 30 feet up and to my left with my 12 gauge, and i sat back with my 223, we set up on a nice rolling cedar/pushed cedar draw, you could see for quite a long ways, tall yellow grass, it just looked great, right at daylight, anyway about 2 minutes into the stand i could see a coyote coming at us from about 800 yards out, i tried and tried to get my brother's attention and never could, i just kept watching the dog come in, so i got my 223 on him and had him in the cross hairs for a long time. anyway at about 40 yards my brother finally seen him and raised my shotgun, and the coyote came to a dead stop (he was aon a pretty good run) and looked at him, and i waited and waited, and waited for him to shoot, i couldnt figure what the heck was going on, and finally he shot and rolled the dog. his very fist coyote. It was pretty cool, but i guess the safety was on and so he pulled the trigger then pulled it harder and harder and finally figured out how to take it off and roll him, he was lucky i had patience this morning! anyway before the day was done we ended up with 3 dogs and 1 cat, hope you enjoy tommy

ok here's a story on one of the cats. i had this particular trap on a drag cause it was close to a 2 track road (and i had a trap stolen out of the exact spot the year before) so i walk up to were the trap is supposed to be, and it is gone, so i'm thinking alright i got a coyote, so i start following the drag marks and there up the hill 50 yards is a nice bobcat on the end of the drag. Well the drag hook is barely being held by a little tuff of grass, so i run up there and stand on the drag. well now what? i have a snarling cat on 6 foot of chain with me standing on the end and a 4' catch pole in my hand, so the cat is 2 foot out of reach. My 4 year old is runninn the line with me that day and is standing 10' away with BIG eyes watching this cat snarl and jerk and run in circles around me. i usually carry my 22 pistol, but had forgotten my belt that day so it was still on the dash of my truck, SO now what... do i walk down the chain holding it down with my feet and hope the cat doesnt jerk it out from under my boots, or that he doesnt run back up the chain and into my lap..... or do i bend over and pick up the drag and pull the cat to me until it is close enough... (the cats is really mad and growling at me) once again hopeing he doesnt turn and run towards me up the chain..... i mess with him awhile with nothing between us but the catch pole and never can get quite close enough to get it on him, so i finally ask my son if he can go back to the truck, 50 yards away and can he open the door and crawl in and get my 22 off of the dash (it is in the holster, tied in with the hammer on an empty chamber) so 4 year old son goes back to the truck and a few mintues latter arives with the gun and we put an end to the harry situation...... so that was a little excitement for a few minutes or so, but dont you think that 4 year old will remember that for a long time! take a kid with you and make some memories with them! happy hunting tommy

firstcoues.... i do both, so the ones i'm posting are a mixed bag, some have been trapped and some have been called in. i caught heck on another sight for posting a "trapped" post, so i generally leave that out now..... you wouldnt believe the number of callers that are against trappers..... why? thats like the deer hunter being against the bird hunter, and the bird hunter being against the hound hunters.... it makes no since, but there are a lot of "hunters" out there against trappers.... why? the trapper is never going to trap "all" the animals and the caller is never going to call them all.... but you would be surpised at the number of comments i get against trapping.... so i got tired of it and quite making posts with "trapped" in them.....but to answer your question i do i bunch of both. but here is a story of one of them for ya i had this particular trap on a drag cause it was close to a 2 track road (and i had a trap stolen out of the exact spot the year before) so i walk up to were the trap is supposed to be, and it is gone, so i'm thinking alright i got a coyote, so i start following the drag marks and there up the hill 50 yards is a nice bobcat on the end of the drag. What Is Considered A Big Bobcat?
tomgobbler replied to Hunter X's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
i trap and call a bunch and i weigh generally everything, MOST arizona cats will run between 16-20 pounds or so, but the good toms will go up to about 30 pounds, i had a guy call me yesterday and say he had a 35 + pound cat and wanted to bring it in to my taxidermy shop to have a rug made out of it, so he brought it in and we put it on the scale and it weighed 22 pounds he figured it "shrunk" 15 pounds in the back of his truck..... it was a nice bif tom and and he went on my large stretcher. but they just dont get that big it weight as a general rule. the largest i got last year was 28 pounds, and i think the largest the year before that was 31 pounds, but rarely will they break 35 puonds around here, the one in the video i'de say was a nice tom in the 20-25 pound range, cousefans cant would be around that same weight. Yotes are the same, i have guys all the time call me and say man i just shot a 40 pound yote, and the bring him in and hes about 25-28 pounds..... anyway just my 2 cents worth in all that i weigh each year, they just dont have the weight that most people think they do. tommy
