Quarter-mile rule only applies to firearms. Since he is considering hunting the deer in August or December I believe he is considering archery hunting this deer and there is no quarter-mile rule for archery. Unless there is a local anti-archery ordinance or he is in one of AZG&F's new "NO Hunting Zones" he might just be able to archery hunt that buck from his backyard.

My prayers go out for all of our military personnel. My son is a Navy Reserve Medic and is Pendleton training with the Marines right now. Looks like he is going to be a Corpsman pretty soon and get sent overseas with a Marine platoon. May God watch over all our military personnel.

Hey on the bright side, I spent a lot of time the last couple of days reviewing a lot of great material on the CWT.com site. Man, I love that site! Biggest problem I have is that I created a huge drool stain on my computer desk staring at all the great photos on the main site! Don't know how to explain that to the boss. Great to have the forum back and Amanda thanks again for running the best hunting site on the web. Lee

I believe you mean Ross Outdoors on 59th Ave & Van Buren in Phoenix.

Gut pile, You may also want to check out some of the maps of the burn here at Inciweb: http://www.inciweb.org/incident/maps/2225/0/

bowman, Amanda offers several tripods and heads in the CWT.com store, you should take a look at these also. Here'e a link: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/tripods_tripod_heads.htm Which hunt did you draw in 34A? We drew the 11/25-12/1 hunt. Lee

Very cool. Does seem to beg for some lion hunting in the area. Good luck this season. Lee

Super tough hunt for someone with mobility issues. Most of the guys I know who have had success in that unit found a track and followed it all day until they got a shot at a lone buck. Not easy hunting at all. You could try water sources and a blind especially if the weather has been dry. Good luck. Lee

couesbowhunter, I got drawn for the same hunt. This will be my 5th year in a row hunting that unit. Good time of year to be in those hills. I like the unit because there is a lot of variety of terrain. Andygrand is right there are usually some leftover tags on this hunt and there were 50 leftovers this year. I see you are in Sahuarita, do you already know this unit pretty well? If not take advantage of your proximity and start learning your way around it soon. Good luck to you. Lee

CEI, Don't anything about the other maps, but the one you posted has been published for many years and the FS places them out in boxes at trailheads, ohv recreation areas, etc. Don't see any changes to this map anyway, so it doesn't appear to be much of an impact in this one area anyway. Lee

The Kimber has what is called a Schwartz Safety. This is an excerpt from an article by Hilton Yam that pretty much says it all: "The platforms utilizing the Swartz safety are a less than ideal choice across the board due to the inherent reliability problems of the design. The Swartz safety is extremely sensitive to the fit of the grip safety to the frame and the timing of the grip safety's trigger blocking arm. Tolerance issues can also lead to a Swartz safety that will time properly when the grip safety is depressed a certain way, and time differently when depressed a different way. This will typically be a product of loose fit of the grip safety to the frame tangs and/or loose fit of the thumb safety shaft through the grip safety. It is possible to have the grip safety timed such that the trigger will be able to release the sear well before the firing pin safety plunger has been moved far enough to clear the firing pin. Problems with improper timing of the Swartz safeties can lead to a situation where you get a "click" when you wanted a "bang." That's a serious problem." I have read stories where the slide on a Kimber is put on with the grip safety partially depressed, causing damage to part of the mechanism. If you don't notice the damage, you could think you will have a pistol that will fire and all you get is a click. A lot of the 1911 forums have information on this problem. I liked the accuracy of the pistol ... just didn't like this potential for failure. Decided that a different 1911 without the Schwartz system would be better for me. That is totally a personal opinion, and I'm not slamming Kimber. Heck, S&W has the same system. It's just not for me. I'll stick with the 70 Series style from now on. Thanks for the info. The safety on mine has always worked flawlessly and never have gotten a click instead of a bang. Definitely will monitor the function of the safety from here on out. I love that Kimber and would hate to get rid of it, but it needs to go bang when I pull the trigger!

Wt in 34A in late Nov, No turkey, no sheep. Good luck everyone. -
2nd choice again, #1119 in 34A, skunked on turkey and sheep.

sjvcon, Could you elaborate on the Kimber safety issue? I have a Kimber and love it but I have not heard of any problems or encountered any problems with the safety. Lee

From the AZG&F page, "This decision does not affect nonpermit-tags purchased over-the-counter for archery-only and juniors-only fall turkey hunts."

Hey all, I got curious and started crunching some numbers. Remember 640 acres = 1 square mile Here's some numbers to put into perspective the size of our wildfires to date. Wallow Fire = 495,016 acres = 773 sq. miles Horseshoe 2 Fire = 184,198 acres = 288 sq. miles Murphy Complex Fire = 68,078 = 106 sq. miles Monument Fire = 18,570 = 29 sq. miles Total for the big 4 fires = 765,862 acres = 1197 sq. miles City of Phoenix = 475 sq. miles City of Scottsdale = 184 sq. miles City of Mesa = 108 sq. miles Total for these three cities = 767 sq. miles That's unbelievable man! The Wallow Fire alone is bigger than Phoenix, Scottsdale and Mesa combined! And it's only June 17th? By the way, did you notice all the vendors that are legally selling fireworks for the 4th of July? Pretty amazing that our State legislature thought it was a good idea to legalize fireworks to the public in the middle in one of the most arid states in the country. Someone should go start a big bonfire under the palm trees at the State Capital and shoot off a bunch of fireworks on the 4th, it would be nice to see how well BS burns! couesdiehard

Very funny! No its not the Salt River! The location of the salt deposits I saw would be too hard to get to unless the deer had gills or rappelling equipment, but I was wondering if the salt deposits would be worth looking into a few hundred yards up hill. Could salt run all through that hill side? Any geologists out there with any idea? I think the answer to your question about salt deposits being elsewhere is pretty obvious. Just climb up the hill side licking the ground and rocks every 5 yards or so. Oh yeah, and if you would post the coordinates and the time of your experiment, I am sure you get a bunch of CWTer's to help! Heck I bet a bunch of them would even offer to document your experiment with video cameras! I couldn't resist. Lee You don't think I wont?! I would lick that whole freakin' mountain side if it meant I could take a 100" buck this next season! No J/K, no LOL, no winking smiley face! I am obsessed, and proud of it! Good for you man! It's not like all of us fanatics haven't done some crazy thing to possibly get an edge on a big coues buck. I'd just like to get video of another obsessed hunter licking rocks. I would probably do it too. If I was sure none of you jokers were watching. Good luck. Hope you find the salt mother lode and it pays off big! Lee
