I think you might want to limit voting to those who register for the contest only because it might encourage more folks to register for the contest. Lee -
FEB 12 Application deadline for elk and antelope tags
couesdiehard replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I called the G & F draw results number today and they still are playing the spring 08 results. As I recall they usually pull that info off when they start running the next draw and put some BS recording on there about how the draw for elk and antelope is in process. I guess they are just cashing the checks and figuring how much interest they could earn by April 25, 08 when they have to post the results. Sorry for whining. I hate the time between draws. Lee -
Coues Buck Contest
couesdiehard replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Great idea Jim about allowing members to vote in some of the categories. I don't how difficult that would be but it would interest me. One caveat, each member should get only one vote each so Jim can't stuff the ballot box like some lame politician! Lee -
Coues Buck Contest

I like Foundry Man's idea....of course we would have to disqualify Outdoor Writer. He's a ringer! I think anything that would encourage contestants to put more effort into writing up their hunt stories and giving the rest of us a feel for being there on the hunt would be great. I would also suggest a category for funniest or weirdest thing that happened on your hunt story. The members here always seem to have some hilarious or strange experiences on their hunts. Lee -
FALL 2007-JAN 2008 COUES BUCK CONTEST
couesdiehard replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Great job Doug, Amanda the winners and the sponsors. Lee -
Looking through the responses my hopes are lifted a bit. For me Elk Archery - 1st 5A 2nd 4A Rifle Antelope - Don't really remember For the wife Elk - 1st 5A - 2nd 4A Rifle Antelope - Same as mine but on separate appl. I'm with Jim on the antelope draws. I spend weeks working on my choices for elk or deer hunts but antelope is such a crap shoot I spend all of about 1/2 second of thought into it. Lee

opinoins on the .300 WSM?
couesdiehard replied to jeepers creepers's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have the Model 70 stainless with composite stalk fire 150 gr Barnes X handloads. I love the darn thing. Shoots accurate when I do my part. Never even heard of problems cycling rounds in the Model 70 version. I am pushing the 150 gr closer to 3200 fps. Shot my buck at 468 yards this year. Angled through the spine and chest and kept on trucking. I like the fact that I have a 7 lb mountain rifle that I can easily load with 165 gr or 180 gr and take the biggest elk in the state with complete confidence. My 2 cents. I know Lark and a few others would not agree with me on caliber or bullets, but oh well. Lee -
Awesome job Riley! Can't compliment you enough on your hunting ethics! Nice buck. You have become one heck of a hunter. Tell your dad hey for me. Lee

No turkey for me again. Drew the archery pig tag for half of the state. Lee

I had a bad experience with a meat processor handling my first elk (a spike) where I received 2 milk crates of packaged meat with bones still in roasts and steaks. It didn't even weigh 100 lbs. I thought this was very low yield from a well cared for spike. 2 years later I killed an almost identical spike but I had taken the time to learn how to butcher it myself. I was able to get over 200 lbs of boneless meat out the elk I butchered and did a better job of packaging it so I lost less to freezer burn also. I have never taken another animal to a meat processor since. heck one of the best parts of hunting now is butchering, and packaging the meat with my family helping. It's really not even very difficult. Lee

Red Rabbit, I will be heading to 34A Thursday morning to start my hunt. Hope to have good news to share when I return. What size buck would you like me to corral up for you? Lee

California bans lead bullets
couesdiehard replied to billrquimby's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I am confused. Can you continue to shoot California Condors with lead bullets or are they considered big game in that retarded state? Lee -
azyoung, Thanks bud. I definitely will let you all know how it goes. Lee

bohunr, I'll be in 5a with an archery bull tag. Glad to hear they are finally kicking into gear. Good luck to everyone. Lee

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I learned about 6v batteries on this site last year and tried them out. They lasted about 3 times as long as the best 12v "marine" battery I have used. Make sure you have a quality battery charging system and you will be amazed. Lee

Draw for Archery Deer from now on....
couesdiehard replied to muley's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Not happy about this one but the thought occured to me, what advantage does G&F see in archery deer draws when this is obviously a great "opportunity" hunt without a draw. Could it be so G&F can collect $7.50 application fees from archery deer hunters? I sure hope not because then it convinces me that all they care about is $$$, not about game or opportunity. Lee
