Proposed change to Wild horse and burro act
couesdiehard replied to cmc's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
and you don't have to wait 15 years to be drawn! -
coues, Brother there is no shame in needing a friend or two to lean on. You sound like you may be suffering from depression. Sneaking stuff depression. It takes the fun out of most everything. I for one will pray for you and yours to receive healing. Meanwhile, take better care of yourself. As you start feeling stronger physically and mentally, you will probably find the passion for all the fun stuff start to return. Lee

I had a disappointing experience with my first spike elk. I decided to read up and learn to do the work myself and two years later, I butchered another spike elk myself and got nearly twice as much meat. Not only did I get more meat butchering by myself but the meat was much better eating and I credit that to the fact that I never use a saw. I only de-bone the meat. I will never go back to a meat processor. As a side benefit the wife and kids actually enjoy helping with the butchering now.

That's awesome Riley! Way to go. Lee

coues7, Good luck with your hunt. Hope you get to use a rifle rest. We hunted the Oct wt rifle hunt there 10/24-10/30 and it was tough! 3 guys and not one shot fired. We saw a few bucks but couldn't get shots. Tons of does, fawns, water and tall grass. The heat only made matters worse. Recent rains had water and food sources available everywhere. Somehow we kept finding the areas the does were using but could not find the bachelor groups of bucks with any consistency. Hope you do well. I saw a booner in that unit during the jr. javelina hunt with my boys and I am sure there are others. On a side note, we saw our first flock of Gould's turkeys and a big bear in 34A on our deer hunt. I'm not calling anybody out, but I hunted a mule deer in unit 42 a couple of years ago who had antlers on either side very similar to that 2nd shed. I sure would scout that area heavily to see if the genetics are growing coues deer that huge.

Which is best? Leica, Swar. or Zeiss need HELP!!!
couesdiehard replied to wbyfireman's topic in Optics and tripods
I had a repair done on my Leicas and they were returned in about 3 weeks. Replaced the lenses, cleaned and refurbished. No charge. Swaro is the same way. I would recommend you try all 3 and choose depending on what works best for you. The glass in all 3 are tops. -
Rosemont Mine and AG&F
couesdiehard replied to Diamondbackaz's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
In there exploration and surveying they have already made a real mess of the area. I can't imagine a mile-wide hole in the ground will ever be reclaimed in that country. I hope this one doesn't happen. Lee -
Nice draws azyoung and youngaz! You guys keep knockin' em dead & G & F may have to ban you from unit 23. Seriously, sounds like you two are going to have a great fall. Congrats.

I drew 34A Oct WT with my 2 buds. I also got unit 8 turkey tag. My twins got 34A javie tags and I will probably buy them over-the-counter turkey tags to hunt with me. My wife and the twins were skunked on deer. I just put in request to take the month of Oct off work. By God that feels good!!

Sportsmans Warehouse in Goodyear to Close
couesdiehard replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Unfortunately Cabelas probably did hurt that SW location but I really shopped the two stores for completely different things. SW was better for having some things in stock and had better service, Cabelas was good for the same things I would have ordered from the catalog but the prices aren't great, the service usually sucks, and the bargain cave is a joke. -
Sportsmans Warehouse in Goodyear to Close

That SUCKS! I have spent a lot of money in that place. It's within a 1/2 mile of my house. Guess I had better visit a few times in the next couple of weeks. -
The stress defense didn't work very well Lark, so I recommend trying the self-defense defense.... "The gobbler was obviously hopped up on 'roids and came at me with spurs-a-flying. The gobbler said he was going to kill me like the many fighting roosters he killed in Mexico before he was deported to Arizona! I felt my life was in danger! It was either the gobbler or me. Lee

Same number of "Riff-Raff" in the hills whether apps are paper or online. I remember all the "Sky is falling!!" crud from my buddies when they started the online apps. We pulled a lot of our best tags during that time and we still found the same amount of idiots in the field as we always had. Application numbers never did skyrocket as predicted. I wouldn't be too much against paying upfront for tags online except I don't like giving Game and Fish my thousands of dollars for 1-2 months so they can earn interest and I can't. Worst thing about the online process in my opinion was when the contractors screwed up the draw and extra tags had to be issued. Then again those were tags I am never going to get anyway; so again no harm no foul. The "Increased Opportunity" credo is a far bigger demon to battle than the online application process, in my opinion.

I had an incident once in AZ on a deer hunt with my cousin. We kept hearing a strange noise up ahead, grunting and them a metallic chain sound. We followed the sound and found a javelina with it's rear leg in a leg-hold trap. We tried for a couple of minutes to figure out a way to free it without the very upset javelina getting the best of us. When the javie almost tusked my cousin and told him to back off and I shot the javelina. We debated whether to take it or to report it. Finally we decided to leave it for the trapper to deal with. I never felt bad about it. I figured I would have faced the consequences if need be, but I couldn't see any problem with putting the animal out of its misery.

Is that the guy who was hiking alone in Utah and got his arm pinned between a boulder and the canyon wall and had to cut the lower part of his arm off? Lee

Unit 33 Hunt pressure
couesdiehard replied to Diamondbackaz's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
DiamondbackAZ, Hate to kick a guy in the groin when he's down but I believe you forgot the 2 Junior Javelina hunts with 135 tags each! Add another 270 tags to the pressure. Sorry about that guy. I picked up on it because I had already done the same calculations for my favorite units. Lee -
I have already found something that changed between the Recommendations and the Regulations. Under the "archery-only nonpermit tag required deer " on page 38 of the regs units 16A and 42 that were recommended to have seasons from Dec. 12, 2008 to Jan 31, 2009 now have seasons from Jan 1, 2009 to Jan 31, 2009 and the 15s now have seasons from Dec 12, 2008 to Jan 31, 2009. Shortened one of my favorite archery hunts for me. Lee

Well today is the deadline for the fall 2008-2009 regs to be posted online. G & F couldn't manage to get them online even one day early. I wonder if they'll manage it today. Lee

I am wondering if anyone has heard any more about Chappell and Scott's Extreme Coues II or DeadEye Productions Coues video coming out this year. Their originals are two of my favorites and I have been hearing they were both close to release for quite a while. Oh yeah, and has Jim White got another batch of Triplers ready yet? What have you guys heard? Lee
