  1. I just read this on the G&F site. I immediately went to the BLM link and posted a complaint. This issue chaps my hide. Bunny huggers of the Humane Society and Washington wackos who have never so much as seen a wild burro want to expand the program protecting these critters. Took a recent ride to Alamo Lake and the habitat there is being destroyed by the burros. They are everywhere! What's more, I never saw ANY sign of deer the whole day! I grew up going to this lake and it used to be great deer habitat, now its ruined. Check out the link and please comment constructively if you feel compelled. Wild horses and burros

Huntin' Striped Marlin instead of Coues...

Jim that is a huge stiped marlin. They are the smallest ones in the area but that is truly a granddaddy of stripies. Congrats. Makes me wish I could get back to Cabo San Lucas soon and try to catch some more marlin and dorado. Lee

why didn't they kill this one?

Only difference I can make out is that this bear was only 2 years old and the one in Thatcher was estimated to be over 4. In that article .270 posted G & F stated something about bears over 4 were considered adults and adult male bears in these situations are killed. I don't agree with it but I think may have something to do with the different treatment. What do you say we start forging some ID's for some of these adult male bears that say they are 2 year old juveniles?

    hunter education

That is the one problem I experienced taking the course with my sons. Was told that the field day scheduling is almost totally reliant on volunteer instructors. So they schedule the field days when and where they have enough volunteers available. We live in the west valley and were lucky that some volunteers scheduled a last minute field day about as far away in the valley as is possible. It would have been quicker for us to go to Tucson! We got her done and are glad we did even though it wasn't exactly convenient. Hang in there and consider making a day trip to a class within two hours of your house, maybe. Lee

    My 2009 monster muley!!!!

Coues Archer, Wasn't trying to imply that toad came from anywhere around Phoenix, just that I have seen desert mulies with similar rack configurations in areas where there are no coues. Meaning I don't think that muley has any whitetail blood in him just by looking at that rack. heck of a deer, Congrats. Lee

    My 2009 monster muley!!!!

See that same antler configuration in the desert carp in the low deserts around Phoenix alot. In areas where there are no coues at all. Seems to be a unique trait amongst desert mulies.

    OTC elk hunt info sought

Figure somebody on the site has probably tried this before so here goes. I am considering trying the OTC elk hunt in the Alamo lake area this winter. Never tried it before but went for a drive out there Saturday and saw that the riparian areas where G & F states the small herds live are tough areas to see much of anything. If anybody has any recommendations about where I should start scouting or what methods have worked well, I sure would appreciate a PM. Just looking for a good starting point or two. Thanks. Lee

    Outfitter Killed

You know my curiosity got the better of me and I found that the United States reported 16,272 murders in 2008 alone. 16,272 divided by 365 = 44.58 murders per day. And our violent crime rate has been falling for several years. On the bright side, our per capita murder rate is about 3 times less than Mexico... Lee

Leica Warranty - Great Customer Service

Chef, I am surprised you say you have heard anything bad about Leica warranty work. I had the same experience as izquick72. They did more than I asked and returned them in new condition promptly and no arguments or questions asked. All I paid was shipping to them. I couldn't have asked for better service. BTW I have the same glass and would give up my rifle before my Duovids.

Tell us about your favorite movies

Hey DesertBull: From Outlaw Josey Wales how about: "Good thing you stopped me. I might have killed her." From Jeremiah Johnson: "Elk can't count!" or " I got a fine horse under me."

    windage

Seems to me that any one of the ballistics programs that you can purchase or download for the computer have the ability to calculate wind-drift for you. You have to enter ballistic coefficient, muzzle velocity, etc. then the program does the calcs for you as I recall. I'm sure some of the shooters here on the site can direct to a good one. I have only used the Barnes program which I purchased some years ago.

Josey Wales is way up on my list of all time favorites. Favorite line: "To heck with them fellas; Buzzards gotta eat...same as worms."

    tobacco

Lark, I don't see eye to eye with you very often but I agree with you totally here. Good job! I finally had to take Chantix to kick the habit after 28 years. I figured the tobacco companies used drugs to keep me hooked maybe I should try a drug to beat it. Best thing I ever did for me and mine. Haven't smoked since January 1st, 2010. I do worry about the damage I might have already done but smoking was only going to make things worse. Hopeful that I will be able to hike those whitetails hills a lot longer now and enjoy my family longer. KUDOS to everyone that has quit. Lee

    Camera classes

I am no expert (you should see the photos I take) but I have heard that the Maricopa Community Colleges offer really good beginner photography classes. Let us know what you end up doing and of course plan on posting your new and improved photos. Good luck.

    EyeShield for your Binoculars

Coues Sniper, Do they really go on your binos as quick and easy as they show in the video? He puts them on with one hand and it looks kind of choppy like they did some fancy editing.

    EyeShield for your Binoculars

Amanda, I just saw the commercial for these on one of the hunting channels this weekend and started kicking myself square in the rear! I have thought about making something just like these since I started glassing. I would go on but I have to go and start working on some other Top Secret ideas I have before someone steals them too!

    Two found dead in AZ...

That's a shame for their families. At least those two young men went peacefully to meet their maker. God Bless them and their families.

    tag transfer

I just copied this from the 2009-2010 Hunting & Trapping Regulations. Seems to me it contradicts what Mr. Elms posted from R12-4-121: A.R.S. 17-332 Form and contents of license; duplicate licenses; period of validity[/b] 2. A parent, grandparent or legal guardian may allow the parent’s, grandparent’s or guardian’s minor child or minor grandchild to use the parent’s, grandparent’s or guardian’s big game permit or tag to take big game pursuant to the following requirements: (a) The parent, grandparent or guardian must transfer the permit or tag to the child in a manner prescribed by the commission. ( The parent or guardian must accompany the child in the field or, if a grandparent allows a minor grandchild to use the grandparent’s permit or tag, the grandparent, the parent or the child’s guardian must accompany the child in the field. In either case, the adult must be within fifty yards of the child when the animal is taken. © The child must possess a class F, class G, class K, class M or class N license and, if under fourteen years of age, must satisfactorily complete the Arizona hunter education course or another comparable hunter education course that is approved by the director. (d) Any big game that is taken counts toward the child’s bag limit.

Yes please post G & F Department's response to your question. I am sure several of us would like to know what they had to say.
  22. That Bison was asking for it! Running around in the BUFF!!! Sorry, that was pretty bad.
  23. Red Rabbit, I thought those leftovers were good for the entire units the way I read it. Did the Region 2 office confirm that only Hopi tribal members can apply for these leftovers?
