Western U.S. 60 Day Percentage of Average Precipitation Map Western State Big Game Application periods will continue to open and close for the next several months. If you are looking for the most out of your draw tags, you MUST consider the amount of precipitation each state is getting (and specific units). Many of the best units and hunts will take DECADES to draw, so make sure you are making the most of it. Make sure you research the data and FACTS! It's not an exact science, but it can dang sure help you avoid obvious disappointments. Below are some maps illustrating the past 30 days of precipitation: After a rough start, Arizona is shaping up to be off the charts! Colorado is very wet in the S.W. corner. NV has some isolated units getting pounded. New Mexico is dry except for the Navajo Nation & a few units. Utah is about 50/50! Some units are 100-800% above normal! Wyoming's corners are dry, but has received quality precipitation in some central and northern areas. Try our Western Hunting Custom Application Service View the full article

I thought this was a pretty slick video put together by CouesWhitetail.com. Captured via a Covert Trail Camera, many animals visited this water hole in Arizona from January to May 2012. Lots of Coues Deer, Bobcats, Elk & more... View the full article

Eric Hunt's 2011 Archery Utah Bull Our good friend, Eric Hunt, sent us an email about his 2011 Utah Archery Elk Hunt. Eric is a great guide & hunter. He killed a giant desert mule deer that was featured in the 2012 Arizona ORG. Here is a little synopsis of his 2011 Utah Archery Elk hunt. "I found this bull the first morning I was hunting, but I was unable to get into range. I hunted hard for 9 days, with many awesome encounters but no shots. On the 9th morning I found a great bull with cows moving away from me. I stayed with them for 5 miles, when the bulls started bugling in every direction. My bull came from the left and an intense fight broke out in front of me. It lasted just a few minutes. I wasn't able to get a shot because the cows were hung up between us. My bull ended up winning the fight and ran the original herd bull off. I stayed with the herd and was able to put an arrow in him at 30 yards. He held up and I quickly put another arrow in him when he stopped to look back. He crashed less than a 100 yards from me! It was an Amazing hunt & I had a great friend, Scott Wood, helping me along the way." Eric with his trophy bull. Nothing like working your butt off and getting the job done in the end. Eric is a founding member of the Arizona Desert Sheep Guide crew. The Arizona Desert Sheep Guides concentrate their efforts on guiding for Giant Desert Bighorn in Arizona. As you can see, they know how to get it done on other animals as well. FYI-we are ALWAYS looking for great stories to share on our blog & inside the ORG. Hunting should be celebrated!!! The ORG is not just about us, it's about you as well. If you have a story to share, please feel free to shoot me an email. Best, Craig Steele View the full article

New Atlas F-150 from Ford We are truly grateful for the support of Colorado River Ford Lincoln of Kingman. They will again be an Outdoorsmen Supporter in 2013! It's actually a HUGE deal, because outdoorsmen spend a ton of money on 4x4 trucks, parts & accessories. Both their service and sales managers are hunters, so they understand what we need in a truck and how we abuse them. This was one of the widest bucks I had ever seen in the high desert. He actually has a small drop tine off of his right beam as well. We never saw this buck again and to our knowledge he was never killed. View the full article

Most of you know we love publishing and celebrating your success stories. We recently added a page to our website called "the ORG Hall of FAME". You will now be able to find all of the past story contributor photos from our back issues. Currently we don't have too many, in fact just one! Here is the weblink so you can check it out: the ORG Hall of FAME! View the full article

Good topic I guess! We enjoy blogging about real issues and not just what we, or our supporters are doing. Tim Pender is correct about writing letters to the commission. State Trust Land is not considered public land by definition. You must purchase a permit to recreate on State Trust Land. If you are actively hunting your AZ Hunting License is your permit. Cattle Companies have to purchase permits to graze cattle on state trust land. I am sure the Diamond A Cattle Company does have all of the proper permits to graze their cattle on the state trust land. Again, I respect private property rights, but checkerboard public land is being used as private land all of the time. It's not right, but it's the TRUTH. The only way to fight for what is right is to get involved. You can write letters and send emails to commissioners and legislators. You can also join a non-profit that has core values you believe in. Best, Craig Steele

So, assuming you understand how different the <a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/">ORG</a> is, I will get to my other points...<br /><br />We BELIEVE in the power of the web, mobile, and social media platforms. The print ORGs separate us from a typical online media outlet, but to deny the transition or impact of the web on traditional media outlets, would be like denying TV didn't grab some of the advertising market from radio. Most of you know we are launching the ORG in Colorado this year. We are very excited about this and about building more relationships with NEW supporters. With that being said, we understand CUSTOMER SERVICE is the business we are in, so we want to make sure we keep ALL of our supporters happy. We have a small business mentality when it comes to our supporters and we TRULY appreciate their support.<br /><br />A few days ago Big Chino Guide Service posted a photo of a great first mule deer buck their client took last year. Custom Application Service-Where to apply based on antler growth?
CEI posted a topic in CEI Outdoors Blog
Well, it's that time of year again! Application time! I personally have a hard time keeping up with all of my duties at the office, but I try to dedicate a few hours each day to evaluate where & what I am going to apply for. The questions are endless... Should I buy points in AZ because of the drought & access issues? Should I hold off on Colorado because the Mule Deer haven't fully recovered? Is Utah a big bull state anymore? What new seasons overlap my OTC hunts?<br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/images/fb6d24ff87f99d17f80b0b2184eb8d42_kzob.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/images/fb6d24ff87f99d17f80b0b2184eb8d42_kzob.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lee Murphy H<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 10px;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">unting Consulting & Western Hunting Custom Application Service Manager</span></span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div>Honestly, I can't keep up with it all and that's why we brought Lee Murphy on board. Lee is one of the best hunters I know, but you probably have never heard of him. With that said, we don't just look at the obvious units for our <a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/Custom_App.html">Western Hunting Custom Application Service Members</a>. We evaluate a number of different elements, which include:</div><div><ul><li style="text-align: left;">The best trophy units</li><li style="text-align: left;">New under the radar hunts</li><li style="text-align: left;">Bonus & Preference Points</li><li style="text-align: left;">Your schedule</li><li style="text-align: left;">Your budget</li><li style="text-align: left;">Guided or UnGuided</li><li style="text-align: left;">Private or Public Area</li><li style="text-align: left;">Drought</li><li style="text-align: left;">Weather</li><li style="text-align: left;">Antler Growth </li><li style="text-align: left;">& more</li></ul></div><div><br /></div><div>We spend much of our time evaluating where our <a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/Custom_App.html">Application Service Members </a>will have the best opportunity to kill the animal they want, on a year-to-year basis. Antler growth and drought conditions are two MAJOR issues that we extensively evaluate. There is some good information out there, but there is also a lot of bogus myths spread around the hunting community every year. </div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/anomimage.pl?ari90dPpct.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/anomimage.pl?ari90dPpct.gif" width="246" /></a><a href="http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/anomimage.pl?ari60dP.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/anomimage.pl?ari60dP.gif" width="246" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Example! At first glance many would tell you to buy points in Arizona this year for elk, but we know better. Keep in mind, you have about 10-15 seconds to capture someone's attention while you are surrounded by 400-800 vendors that are trying to do the same thing. Honestly, until our brand is more well known, people will continue to believe we are <b>just another hunting magazine</b>.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">With that said, I<b> do not </b>dislike other hunting magazines, in fact, I like many of them. I currently only subscribe to <a href="http://westernhuntermagazine.net/" target="_blank">Western Hunter Magazine</a> and <a href="http://elkhuntermagazine.com/" target="_blank">Elk Hunter Magazine</a>. <a href="http://westernhuntermagazine.net/" target="_blank">Western Hunter Magazine</a> is my favorite national hunting magazine because I find the editorial staff and content are catering toward my style of hunting. Again, I like a few other magazines, but I don't have enough time to read them all. Typically, if I see a magazine issue on a newsstand that has an article or two covering the states I hunt, I buy it.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HxykozWSseA/UP7OUPyW48I/AAAAAAAADvA/RgpG_6I0EUs/s1600/2013-Arizona-Hunting-Edition-Cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HxykozWSseA/UP7OUPyW48I/AAAAAAAADvA/RgpG_6I0EUs/s400/2013-Arizona-Hunting-Edition-Cover.jpg" width="307" /><b><i></i></b></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b><i>2013 Arizona Hunting Edition of the ORG</i></b></td></tr></tbody></table><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The <a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/" target="_blank">ORG</a>s (<a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/" target="_blank">Outdoorsman's Resource Guides</a>) are state hunting publications. They are basically half phone book (directory) and half magazine. The <a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/" target="_blank">ORG</a> state hunting editions are published annually. We are not a subscription based magazine. In our minds, the <a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/" target="_blank">ORG</a> is more of an annual product, than a magazine. You can <a href="http://shop.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/2013-Pre-Order-SAVE-50_c4.htm" target="_blank">Pre-Order</a> the <a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/" target="_blank">ORG</a>s at a discounted rate, which is the closest thing to a subscription we offer. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Being completely honest, we believe outdoorsmen are far more likely to buy a magazine on a newsstand if the content is focused on a state they hunt or want to hunt. A typical national magazine may have 1 or 2 stories a year covering your home state, but the<a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/" target="_blank"> ORG</a>s have 15+ in just 1 issue! With that said, we know there are some state magazines that exist, but most are free publications, which typically means they are completely consumed with ads and lack quality content. Many are also trying to compete on a subscription based model, which won't work for a state magazine. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: center;">So, to answer a few questions we heard this weekend: </div><br />The<a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/" target="_blank"> ORG</a> is<b> not</b> like Eastman's Hunting Journal. All of the stories and information inside each edition cover a specific state. The <a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/" target="_blank">ORG</a> is also not like Huntin' Fool<b>; </b>we don't publish<b> any </b>unit information, we simply have a section covering how-to get tags, licenses and permits for a specific state. Yes, we do have a <a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/Custom_App.html" target="_blank">Western Hunting Application Service</a>, but we don't see the value in commercially publishing what has already been published. <b>FYI</b>-I like some of the issues from both these magazines. I just don't subscribe because <b>I don't have time to read all of those issues</b><i> </i>and I don't want to read about a bunch of places I don't care to hunt. <br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-idZt_iB7lzI/UP8gU6Q74AI/AAAAAAAADwY/HY8bcM9rxh4/s1600/Print-Content.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-idZt_iB7lzI/UP8gU6Q74AI/AAAAAAAADwY/HY8bcM9rxh4/s400/Print-Content.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My stack of magazines from this past year. I don't have time to read them all.</td></tr></tbody></table><br />The <a href="http://www.outdoorsmansresourceguide.com/" target="_blank">ORG</a>s are annual state specific publications that are built to not only be read, but to be thrown in your truck and in your smart phone.<i><b> </b></i>If you hunt, guide or spend a fair amount of time in the woods, like I do, you understand how valuable it is to have a resource or phone number with you. <i> </i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i> </i></div> View the full article

Georgianna Piestewa was able to take her once-in-a-lifetime Navajo Nation Desert Bighorn Sheep in 2012. We met Georgianna's husband (Adam) several years ago and we have become great friends. It's always nice to meet good people that share many of the same values as you. The raw emotions flow out of Georgianna after she shoots her ram, which makes this video that much better. Adam talked about editing some of it out, but we are glad he and Paper Rocket Productions left it in.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://vimeo.com/57411064" target="_blank">Georgianna Piestewa's Navajo Nation Sheep Hunt </a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" mozallowfullscreen="" src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/57411064" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://vimeo.com/57411064">Georgianna Piestewa-</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/paperrocketproductions">Paper Rocket Productions</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com/">Vimeo</a>. </div><br /><i>Some of the hunt dynamics...</i><br /><br />First, Georgianna is a full time RN and mother of three. Her tag was a once-in-a-lifetime draw permit. They could not scout until after the auction hunter had killed his ram. The auction hunter ended up hunting right up until the very end, which lead to just a few days of preseason scouting and the season was only 5 days long. The Navajo Nation has only produced a couple of rams over 160"; so it is not considered to be a very good place to find a B&C ram. <br /><br /><b>Congratulations to the entire Piestewa family.</b> View the full article

I recently came across this short web-video of a hunter finding his mule deer buck two weeks after he had shot it. The entire back half of the buck had been picked clean by scavengers. Now, I am not saying we should GLORIFY wounding an animal, but at some point we have to realize the FACTS! Nothing goes to waste in the wild! Something or someone always benefits from the death of another creature. We may not like the outcome, but it's the cold hard facts. <br /><br />We applaud this young man for tagging his buck, even though he did not get the meat. Some may want to pick a part his actions, but if you hunt long enough, it will happen to you. Keep in mind, ethics are something humans have and other predators don't. So, if you mortally wound an animal, you will be faced with some ethical decisions...<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href=" " target="_blank">Recovered Mule Deer x2 Weeks Later</a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="281" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pHkx5e4DlQ0?list=FLUq-3DSLNyCWJtSNk3imKiQ" width="500"></iframe></div> View the full article
