Okay yes you are right in most cases. But see the coyotes will always circle down wind so I make it a point to call down wind. Since I have done this I kill a coyote almost everytime (when I dont miss LOL). I make sure I do everything in my power to be scent free from washing my clothes in scent free, bagging them, showering in scent free JUST BEFORE you go out, spraying down at EACH stand and wearing scent wafers. Let me tell you getthe wind at your back and start calling YOU WILL SEE A difference in the stands that may have not brought anything. Well you think they didn't but half the time they are behind you and you have never seen them. To your case I would have also done the same thing they were doing. Switch to an aggresive call and then follow it up with a yipe (coyote distress). Then that away since what seems like you are telling us they were coming in and got into it before they made it there. If you would have done the agg and yipe them they would have thought (coyotes can't think lol) "holy crap the others got there first" or " hey they are in our territory lets get em. The other day I set up with the wind on my back and in 5 minutes had one come in and YEP i missed I never stop calling just because I shot and here is why. I kept calling and 5 minutes later another shows up so here we go I am going to redeam myself right? nope freakin missed again. Check the gun, gun was on but hey I get more excited over the coyotes than the deer or elk. Try it out you will be surprised what happens. I never just stick with a rabbit call I mix it up BIG TIME. It works too. Heck I have even played a tune on my calls me and my buddies have because we were not calling anything in to our surprise a coyote got mad at us and was ready to fight. You should have seen it all this was the funniest thing I have ever seen. Good luck you guys and get as many as you can. Yeah that is all good info!

Not sure what happened. But one thing I have learned and I sure you already know this but always stay down wind of them. They have a great sense of smell. Try to be in a shaded spot and have something to break up your outline, like a small tree or large brush. When walking to a stand make sure your not skyling your self to where they can see you. For coyotes I try to get in a elevated spot so I can see them coming in. The old coyotes will try to circle you trying to catch a sent. I had some similar thing happen to me, they would hang up and whimper a little after a bit. I've done alot better just doing the little simple things like I mentioned above. If they won't come in still I use the Ki Yi sound, takes a few mins but they eventually show themselves in a shooting distance. And one more thing, no slamming doors and talking loud when you get out of your vehicle!!!! Thats a peppeve for me Just my 2 cents

So Talking to a friend of mine briefly he told me that he heard that 20 moa bases are probably a good idea for the longer distances. Is anyone using a set-up like this, and were would be a good place to start? I understand that your glass is polished from the middle to the outside making the clearest point in the scope dead center and that is the reason behind the 20 moa bases. I bought a set of tally bases because they are nice and light weight, but may not use them because of this. I called tally and they also said 20 moa bases are the way to go and they do not make a set of the 20 moa. I know nightfocre does but they are around 150-to 200 for the bases. Any help would be apreciated!
-
The only problem with nightforce is that they dont make it in a 1" ring. Kinda stinks but all thier stuff is 30mm, but I could just buy the base from them. stiff expensive but i'm sure its the best. I may have to do that. Where are you located at 308nut? might have to come talk to you!!!
-
Right on! I will check them out. It makes perfect sense now that you explained it. Thanks for the info. What rings would you recommend? I like the warens but they are heavy, any other sugestions?

I just wanted to say a BIG thanks to John AKA "hammy" for helping me out on this hunt! I scouted 36A pretty hard 2 weekends before the hunt and saw over 40 mule deer does and about 6 mule deer bucks,,,,, not seeing a single whitetail! It was pretty hard to get motivated. I talked with Hammy and he gave me a few pointers about the unit! Opening day I eneded up seeing 23 whitetail does, 2 WT bucks, and 0 mule deer all in the same area I was souting in. The 2 bucks where traveling together, one about 60" and the other about 85-95". Trying to judge them from 1.5 miles away through my Swaros was tough, but they had one thing that I was looking for, "antlers". I busted down the moutain to my truck, and drove it around the mountain to decrease my distance between the 2 bucks. I was busted by a few does and never saw the bucks again that day. The next morning I hiked up to the area they were in, within a 100 yards, I stood patiently and this little 56" buck came out behind a bush at 80 yards. End of story! Just glad to harvest a buck this year and thanks again to Hammy! I also had some illegals come through camp flashing their flashlight on my tent at 9pm day before the hunt started. Long story short, called 911, got the sherriff who transfered me to BP, then BP transfered me back to the sherriff, then transfered me back to the call center for BP, who then transfered me to the sherriff who said BP was coming out when I gave them My GPS cordinates the first time. Bp did not show up so I called them back and talked them into coming out. Never showed up!! Oh well looks like the illegals were just passing through and did not cause any problems.

Thanks guys! And yes there was a bigger buck in there with them. My bro in law and father in law combed the flats down towards are vehicle they said they saw something running fast away from them. Said they couldn't put antlers on it! This was their first hunt and they did a great job hiking around with me. Not sure if they will hunt again with me though, it was tough, but thats hunting. I had a blast. We saw some of the sonoran antelope down there to in with all the deer.
