My son doesn't want to go Elk Hunting!!!
KaibabHunter replied to Big Browns's topic in Youth Hunters
There's no way an elk tag is going to waste in our house, maybe a javelina but not elk/deer. I impress on my boys that $ has already been invested and they have a special opportunity to help the family by providing meat. They take pride in helping put food on our table. My youngest listed that on his letter to Santa this year as one of the good things he did. They are expected to put forth the effort (10%) and I put forth the effort (90%) to make it fun and hopefully successful. Some things I've done that help...my oldest said he wanted a "sniper rifle" - camo pattern, scope, bipod - he thinks he's a sniper. Both boys love to deck out in full camo which is easy to accommodate. If we sit a blind I bring a portable charger and let em have the phone. I tell them that if they give me the first and last 3 hours of the day we can do what they want in the middle. I keep em warm - cold (and bugs) seems to kill their stamina/motivation. We camp in the summer in the unit we pull tags so we can scout, hang t cams, and let them drive the ranger a little. Bows, BB guns, candy, portable DVD player, rifle practice, land navigation/survival training, and campfires to keep em having fun. He'll come around once u get him out there. -

My son was gifted an old 1952 Remington 721 270 Win last year. It's a pretty cool gun topped with a 1952 Weaver scope and an old school leather sling. But the stock was showing its age. To help keep him excited for his upcoming jr deer tag we gave the stock a makeover and a new Leupold Rifleman 4-12x40mm scope is on the way. It'll probably need to be bedded but we'll shoot it first and see what she does. Before During After

Rifle stock makeover
KaibabHunter replied to KaibabHunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
We put the rifle to work for Ethan's first big game animal on a jr desert Muley tag. We made a great stalk on a group of 5 young bucks. He took the top of this one's heart off at 175 yards. -

With 4 of us in the tent for Jr deer tags I need to organize the tent space a little better. I am in the market for a disc-o-cot if anyone wants to sell. Ryan

Glassing Tips- What works best for you? Unit 8 Hunt
KaibabHunter replied to mrodri30's topic in Elk Hunting
Good clean halfway decent glass, 10x42-15x56 and maybe a spotting scope of u can see for a long ways on a sturdy tripod. A chair and somethin to drape over ur head on a sunny day helps a ton. Time wise depends on how far u can see I guess, one ridge vs a whole mountain side. I will say 2 guys that mentored me a ton on desert deer told me to sit a knoll all day so i did. It wasn't a big area to glass and these days I woulda probably moved way earlier. I sat that sun up to sun down and with 20 minutes of light a very nice 4 pt muley stood up out of the little veign in the flats I had been looking over all day. Seems like most of the desert deer I glass up are 1-2 miles away on average. Sometimes closer/farther. Mid day can be good to to catch em shifting beds. I've never hunted unit 8 but on my boys late bull tag last year we glassed up 7 bulls on the side of a big Mesa at about 3 miles. Next morning we moved into that area, still hunted the cedars, jumped a nice bull, followed him into a deep little canyon that opened up nicely and he shot a smaller bull coming up that canyon. Good luck! -
Video that just popped up on age, not size, but good info for helping size up a ram. https://youtu.be/Lk8nqu56D5A

I'm trying to get my rifle ready for a dec hunt. I shot my 300 win mag thru a chronograph yesterday when it was about 100*. It gave me 3 speeds on a 3 shot group: 3180, 3194 & 3198 (avg 3190). The box says 3120 from the manufacturer. My dec hunt the avg temp will probably be 45-50*, maybe as low as high 30's and as high as 70*. Avg elevation of say 2500. Zeroed for 200. I want to order my CDS dial from leupold, would it be safest to just use the 3120 from the manufacturer or should I use the avg from yesterday of 3190?

Getting a new rifle - advice needed
KaibabHunter posted a topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
So I need some help. I'm mostly a bow hunter and only rifle hunt on my kids tags. I know enough to get them up and running out to 300 yards. I have a couple hand me down rifles but I am ready to finally get my all around hunting rifle. I don't want to change up ammo etc based on species/tags so basically an elk setup oughta cover everything imo. My budget is $1200 for gun, scope, rings, recoil pad, and taxes. I'm looking to practice out to 600, but prefer shots under 300. Just in case I screw up and he goes from 250 to 500, I wanna be able to take a follow up shot with confidence. I don't reload, and frankly have too much on my plate as it is to start that venture so the gun will have to shoot factory ammo. I hunt hard and want a light weight gun. I'm looking at BDC reticle scopes, probably Leupold or Vortex based on budget. I'm liking the Tikka T3 Lite 300 Win Mag and think I've made up my mind in that. Where should I start for factory ammo? I'd like an ammo option in 165-180 grain. And any scope recommendations as well. Maybe some of you have this gun and know what works well out of the box. Not much of a gun guy so any advice is appreciated. Thx Ryan -

I was gonna lighten the trigger to its min 2lbs but the factory 3lbs felt fine to me for round 1. I'm hoping to get out next weekend for round 2 with it. That'll also be when I start to put the Barnes 165's thru it and start to group it. Also have a chronograph lined up to run it thru before I order my one free turret. Unfortunately Sako was not in my budget but I'm happy with this combo so far. -
Recently, each of the 3 elk my oldest has taken. 1 cow from a blind 107 yards after 5 days of hard hunting, 2nd cow spot/stalk at 87 yards with 2 bulls at 40 yards and his little brother tagging along, his bull last year at 170 yards in 12 degree weather. All 1 shot kills. Both boys have jr deer tags and is my youngest's first hunt. We'll only have a couple days to make it happen but should be fun.

Would you trust Barnes 165gr TTSX out of a 300 Win Mag on a Az desert bighorn tag for shots up to 500?

Shot it for the first time this weekend. Very happy with the very light recoil - feel like I could shoot it all day long with the brake and recoil pad. This was more of a barrel break in then a zero and group but it was starting to tighten up. I also shot my boys 270 Win that I put a recoil pad on (no brake) and I think it was bucking me more than the 300 Win Mag. Next session will start the actual zero (assuming it likes my ammo). -

I picked up the bare Tikka today. All the other stuff I ordered had arrived so I just did the first round of putting it all together. I had a $1200 budget and have already exceeded it by probably less than $100. This is a budget factory Tikka T3 Lite 300 Win Mag topped with a Leupold 3xi 4.5x14x40 mm scope that's gonna shoot factory ammo. I was able to get a sweet discount on the scope and a couple other things so it's probably closer to $1600 full retail. I'm open to feedback i.e. cheesey, good/bad etc. Let me know what you think.
