Moving back to the north country, big thanks to CWT for a great 4 years!
KaibabHunter replied to yotebuster's topic in The Campfire
Good luck! You should get your lifetime license before you leave...I know I would. -
The trophy rock gets hammered by elk for sure. Coues hit it as well but mine are up north. Mule deer seem to hit it the least. I like the t rock because it blends in pretty well and not as obvious to other hunters.

Volunteering
KaibabHunter replied to coueshunter's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I plan on being a part of the SWSA. I volunteered on the 442 water project last month and took my 2 boys along. They had a alot of fun, even in the heat. Since he turned 10, my oldest has had 2 42jr deer tags (unsuccessful so far, but he loves it) and 1 6a jr cow (succussful). After getting his cow, I believe he is officially hooked on hunting. Same game plan for my youngest. Get him hunting as soon as he's old enough and take him along on a few until then. Now we have an e caller, and i figured that would be an easy way to get both kids out hunting in between the main hunts, unfortunately its officially too hot around the valley but we should get up north a couple times this summer for a camping trip and will break it out for some fun. Unfortunately gas prices have really hurt our ability to just up and go, now it has to be budgeted for and will limit the # of trips we take. I also planned on getting new binos this year, but now just have that money set aside for gas $ for hunting and will make do with my current setup. -
Here's a few pics from the project:

Not to mention what damage will be done to that 30' area of the road with the trucks, quads, and 5th wheels packed in there. And that's if it's dry, what if it rains? Besides the dust, I also think its a safety issue to be that close to some roads.

Heavy trails between water/feed can be good either by tree stand or ground blind. If a guy(s) are sitting the hole, sit the most used ave of approach 300-400 yards off the water or move to anobther area. Less pressure and more activity on waterholes that have had the roads to em shut down. Areas with lots of lupine (purple flower) are good feed for deer. Lots of trails not far from the roads just out of sight from the road hunters. I passed on a couple small ones and stalked a couple real nice ones but didn't get the shot. I hunt all day, dark to dark. Make sure u have a turkey tag too. Haven't been up since it went to archery draw but thats my .02. Once I cash out my points (10) Ill probably put in for this hunt and get back up there.

Coyote hunting within city limits
KaibabHunter replied to gotcoues's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
The coyotes aren't necessarily a problem for me but they are walking distance away. I just got an e caller and am brand new to predator hunting. Was hoping for the convenience of getting thru the learning curve, and an excuse to take my boys out more often, within a couple miles from home rather than 60+. Gas $ matters these days. -
A buddy's dad took a nice 337 bull on that hunt in 2010. I would happy to draw that tag. If its close by sounds like you will be able to put in some scouting time.
-
Chase and I will be up in fri night. We're gonna break in a new e caller in the area.
-
Would anyone burn 10 pts for this hunt?
-
Had 6as in 2010. Gonna have to have multiple spots high and low scouted out. Also think we're they might go if the pressure is enough to move em-might not see tons while scouting but who know if an area nearby is gettin hammered. I always OTC deer hunt right before the elk hunt for my final scouting trip for elk. I didnt have any problems with other hunters and only ran into a couple. I chased the biggest bull I've ever chased right between multiple camps 2 days in a row off one of the roads. I was amazed nobody was chasin them but I guess they were hunting elsewhere...

Coyote hunting within city limits
KaibabHunter replied to gotcoues's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
For my purpose I called the phx s mtn park ranger and because it falls within city limits any firearm, even a pellet/BV gun, discharge is illegal. Initially he said U can take a bow but it's a Misdemeanor to leave the trail even to retrieve game. He also said its a misdemeanor not to retrieve game (littering), even a coyote. Essentially they have made it impossible for hunters to utilize the area. They also said that the g&f map show the park as excluded from 47m - I was looking at it from my phone and couldn't clearly see the boundaries... I have a baziilion coyotes right in our neighborhood that are essentially protected. He also admitted that there are 0 deer in the park. The park is managed for the hiker, mtn bike rider, horse rider...not the hunter or wildlife enthusiast. So anyway, call and check with ur city first. -
Coyote hunting within city limits

Here is a link to the senate bill that authorizes it: http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/50leg/1r/bills/sb1334p.pdf I'm walking distance from south mtn and there are a ton of dogs in the area. If I read the regs right the metro units are excluded for general firearms, but rim fire and limited weapon is legal. However note 5 states that: "method of take may be further restricted by local govt regulation." I will double check with phx pd, mcso, and s mtn park to make sure what's legal. Other notes restrict specific areas around the metro areas. -
Just got thru on web. Officially not drawn.
