I got the Trimble app this year and it was OK. The GPS signals in these apps seems pretty weak and that was the main problem - hard time locking onto your present location. For spots without service you have to "pre-load " maps, if you don't it won't load maps which sucks if you don't realize it until you're up there. For $6 it's still a good tool to have IMO.

Turkey an pigs for me and my boy - our first spring hunt.
-
My boy took a big mature cow last year and it netted about 95 lbs boneless. Depending on how much they have to discard from contamination (hair, dirt etc) can really result in lost meat. Ours was pretty clean IMO but we still lost some poundage due to contamination. That what I was told anyway...

Good luck coach! Hope you find what you're lookin for.

Not sure about this year but my boy had that tag last year and they were still goin strong during the jr hunt.

Hours / miles?

I gave him a spot on the southside. Pretty consistent for cows and smaller bulls. Had a small herd come right in on top of me the evening of sep 13 when I went into get my cam. Small 6pt was pretty worked up with about 8 cows and calfs.

Just curious if anyone else is gonna be DIY on the strip? I'll be in 13B solo in about 8 days for the whole season if necessary.

Just wanted to give a quick account of my hunt and say thanks to all those that offered info. Hunted 20 days, was up there 22 total. I was welcomed with washed out roads and lots of mud - got stuck twice. Stuck twice for a total of 5+ hours on day 2. Rain, mud, hail, electrical storms, sunburn, flies, spiders, and more rain was on the menu the whole hunt. Longest period without rain was 5 days otherwise it was every 1-3 days for big, ruin your chances for sitting water type, storms. The drive in from St George. Chased two 190" bucks 1st and 2nd day then they ghosted. Switched areas and chased a group of 5-7 bucks with the biggest being in the 170's for 4 1/2 days and finally got a shot at my max range and put it right over his back on day 9. They were really loving the acorns. This storm is heading right for the guzzler I was hoping to sit the next day. Fast forward to day 18 of the season, 20 total, and the buck i've been waiting for shows up on the trick tank i'm sitting. He comes in quartering to harder than i thought he would and i chose to wait for a better angle (even though I could've shot and likely easily killed him in hindsight). By the time he gives me broadside he's put an obstacle between him and I think I can clear it with my arrow and touch off. Needless to say my arrow did not clear it and he's off unhurt. Then it rains for my last 2 days and he was never seen again. I'll be kicking myself over him for a long time. With all the rain I spot/stalked for 2 out of the 3 weeks and a sat a guzzler for 1 week. The blind setup. Didn't hear of lots of success other than the guides droppin 3 big ones. Thanks to Matt Schimburg for gettin me in the area of bucks I was willing to shoot - pretty sure I found every big buck he told me about. Other than sitting the blind I think I only had 2 days I was not chasing bucks. Also wanted to say thanks to Travis McClendon who was bringing a hunter into the tank I was already on. No issues and he let me use his phone to call home because mine didnt have any service. FYI cell service for AT&T doesn't exist but guys with verizon could get it in certain spots.

Thanks! Im pumped - leave tues night. If your havin success stick with january and keep building pts. On a year you don't tag out put in for a good tag and cash in your points.

You should go hunt OTC bear and turkey.
-
I'm using a scouting service from one of the guides up there - figured that would be the best way to get the most intel for the $.
-
Nope i applied for 13b on purpose - not sure what you'getting at but thanks for wishing me good luck. Sounds like its gonna be a tough hunt this year and just curious who was In the same boat as me.

Things your huntin buddies do that drive you nuts : )
KaibabHunter replied to twigsnapper's topic in The Campfire
Limited hunting experience and complains 2 hours in that we aren't seeing anthing (this is in the desert...), says he has a tripod but won't use it, shift spots later and pull into a camp spot and he says "there ain't spit in here I'm gonna go drive the roads." 200 yards from camp tons of sign and I chased 3 different bucks the day after he left after a whole 1.5 days he set aside for hunting. 1st text 3 months later is asking me for my gps coords up north for fall hunt. I was trying to help the guy out but I think his expectations were far from reality. -
+1 on the roost. I'm no expert but I found a roost and found em flying off of it in the morning and coming back to it in the evening 2-3 days in a row. There would be just a couple gobbles at daybreak then theyd fly down and be Silent. That was the "lightbulb" that went on for me for fall turkeys.

Recommendations for a good flashlight?
KaibabHunter replied to Gr8 White Jr's topic in Other Hunting Gear
+ 1 comes with a car charger too. About $130 when I got mine. Streamlight super tac is also very bright if you want a battery version, about $80. -
Coach, that buck definitely fits the no brainer category! Hopefully a no brainer gives me the opportunity so I can just skip the whole should I, shouldn't I dilemma.

I searched but couldn't find old posts on the subject but I'm sure some exist. I'm not hung up on score, but say you had a very sweet tag and the possiblity of 200" bucks in your area and many "lesser" (say 160"-180") bucks that would normally be shooters. What makes you recognize and pass the 185" buck (something I would have a very hard time doing) vs a low 200" buck. Pics to illustrate would be very helpful. Here's one of mine to kick it off, what class do you think he falls.

13B - Anyone here going up there this year
KaibabHunter replied to Coach's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
I have the archery tag - I head up in 20 days and will hunt the whole season is necessary. -
That does help! Here's a couple more: http://gothunts.com/field-judging-mule-deer/ http://www.liveforhunting.com/hunting/big_game/how_to_field_judge_mule_deer

Pretty sure they come back and add the loyalties back in.

Great info by all and thx for the pics Roy. What's everyones experience with velvet bucks and how it makes a buck look bigger, at least mass wise than he really may be?
-
Odds are that alot more people put in since they don't have to front as much $ with the online draw. The number of applicants this year compared to last will be higher IMO.

$265 + 7.50 (app fee) = $272.50
