It's been a long time comin but I arrowed my first mule deer yesterday. I've passed on some young bucks but not this time. I hunted for 8 days earlier this month with 2-3 close calls including passing on a forky at 12 yards. I went out last week closer to home with only a couple of does seen. After the big rain on Monday I had almost talked myself out of going but left at 4 am to venture deeper into a unit I'm trying to get more experience in. Glassed til 11 then decided to do or die on water due to the amount of sign on it pre rain. I didn't have high hopes. Was in my blind by 1:30, asleep by 1:40 and woke up to slurping noises at 2:30 at 10 yards and had my buck. There's a couple guys I met on this site years ago that have been a huge help to me with desert mulies over the years - thanks!

It's in or very near sheep country so assuming it's bighorn.

Just got out this evening to start checkin cams in the desert hoping to find bucks and pigs. Well unfortunately for my eyes and no BS an old man in nothing but a black g string is on cam....still laughing/throwing up...have the pics to prove but figured Id wait to see the response...the cam was in plain view 10 ft from the trough not hidden at all.

My oldest filled his tag this morning at 8:45. My boys somewhat willingly got up at 5:00 am and we hit the trees at first light. Finally got a bugle to chase and ended up right in the middle of the herd starting to bed all around us. Took 15 minutes before a nice cow gave him an 87 yard shot. Double lungs and 20 yards an he had his second cow as a jr. We were separated and pinned down by about 10 yards and I thought I was videoing the cow he was going to shoot but turned out to be a different one. My 8 year old was with us and couldn't stop telling Chase what a good job he did killing that elk. Really glad we got it done with only 2.5 days to hunt.

We had already tagged out but went to pick up a ground blind we brushed in off a tank. I've run a camera there all summer and we've always walked in to keep the pressure to a minimum (and it's technically on one of those "illegal" roads you can't drive on...so illegal it has fresh tire tracks on it every time I've gone in.) Anyway I noticed fresh quad tracks in the meadow, followed their direction, and looked up to see a new pop up blind not 50 yards from ours. Couldn't even walk it 80 yards from the road he wasn't supposed to be driving on. I don't care about the driving on the road but more that he had to drive across the meadow to drop a 12lb blind and the only hunt is the jr elk so he likely had a kid with him thinking that this is how you do it. We already had our elk but still thought it was a jerk move pretty much on all points. If we hadn't already killed it would've been extra frustrating. Because if this and other negative experiences this year in this area I 've crossed this part of the unit off my hit list.

Thanks for the comments. I was glad that we got one by chasing bugles and stalking in - a more exciting hunting experience for them (last one we sat a tank) but more complaining of sore feet... Ryan

Need Help with choosing .243 or 7mm-08 Remington/Savage or Ruger???
KaibabHunter replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Youth Hunters
We chose the axis 7mm-08 a few years ago when we were in the same boat. I got a trigger assist for it wich makes it much lighter. He shoots Hornandy 139 SST's. I believe they gave us a rebate/voucher too when he's ready to change to a standard stock from the youth size. -
The majority of the area I'm scouting for elk is all pinyon land in rolling hills-new to me and very hot after 9 am. Curious what the mid day archery tactics are for bulls as I like to hunt all day long. Glass, still hunt, ???

My 2200 was about 6-7 years old and showing proportionate signs of wear/tear i.e. broken zippers, tabs, minor wear holes etc. Washed it, sent it in, gotta VM that it's hunting days were done and they were sending me a new 2200 which arrived today. Took less than 10 days turnaround. Only cost me shipping there and back. Just wanted to give a shout out to out their outstanding customer service. Ryan

Some of the better pics after a month long soak. Non-res dad has the tag and is primarily always been a meat hunter and would be happy with a nice 6 pt. For our unit these are pretty good bulls. Hoping to give him an exciting AZ elk hunting experience. Next check they should all be hard horned. Thoughts on score for this guy... 5 pt Nice herd of cows Ryan

Thanks for the comments. I'm watchin 3 different areas all over the unit. All cams (8) have consistent pics of elk. Who knows where these bulls will be when the hunt comes. Some will Leave, And some new ones will move in. I helped pack out a 348" bull last year 200 yards from one of these cams. 348 is a no doubter in this unit. Ryan

NEW ELK VIDEO!!! "The Class Of 2014"
KaibabHunter replied to High Point Outfitters's topic in Elk Hunting
Awesome bulls. Just curious on your thoughts on where those bulls will be by the time the hunts come around. In your experience will everything change or will you be finding some of those same bulls where you're finding them now? -
We have the Kodiak 12x9 with awning enclosure. For a tent this has all the room/features I could ever need and can't see myself needing another tent again. It says it takes 2 to setup but I set it up by myself in about 25 minutes. The 10x14 would be a good choice too.

I say Lupine. Deer like it.

Pushed my tires about as far as I can and need a new set. Was hoping to at least get thru the summer but should get it done rather than risk it. Anybody here deal in tires? I have decided on Toyo Open Country AT 2, 35x12.5x18's. Any help/recommendations appreciated. Ryan
