Finally was able to get the last of my cameras up north yesterday. This bull only came by once during the archery hunt.

Thx for the comments. Picked the meat up yesterday. Dropped off 187 lbs quartered and netted 152 lbs processed. We're pretty happy with that for a young bull and it should easily carry us through to next season.

My oldest has gone 2/3 on Jr. Cows so this year we tried for a late bull tag for him and he drew it. We've never had a late elk hunt so this was new for us. After 9 miles of walking opening day and more and more hunters coming into our area we decided spend day 2 in some steep nasty cedar country where we had glassed up some Bulls, one of which looked to be very nice. We worked the area slowly from first light and jumped a very nice 6 pt at about 30 yards at about 1:30 pm. He crossed an opening at about 200 yards but we couldn't get him to stop. We headed in the direction he took off to thinking that once he got in the deep draw on the other side he would calm down. We got there and the opposite ridge opened up nicely where we could see a decent portion of it. Chase thought he heard a branch break and looked down in the bottom at his bull and a spike were moving up the draw. Chase got setup on the shooting sticks as the Bulls started to get nervous and trot up the opposite ridge. We were hoping for a big bull but once Chase saw antlers he said he was willing to shoot either of them. I cow called and got his bull to stop broadside at 170 yards and chase hammered him with near perfect shot with his Axis 7mm-08 shooting Hornandy 139 sst. One shot was all it took and he went down 15 yards from where he was hit. We did the gutless method, got all the meat hung and back to the ranger before dark. Went in for the rest today, broke down camp, and dropped the meat off at caseys before heading home. Chase did great with all the walking, fighting a cold, cold temps, and seeing it all through to the end to inlclude carrying out the head and a hind quarter.

My oldest has used the 7mm-08 since he was 10. Killed 2 cows with it. Shoots Hornandy 139gr SST's pretty well.

Going on our first late rifle bull tag southeast of flagstaff. Curious if these are a must have for this hunt or not. Truck is 4wd but gets loose in the mud and has never experienced snow. Ryan

Rcd, I figured for $12 a pair they couldn't hurt. The video on their website said its ok to use em.
-
So I ordered through etrailer. Can only get 1 set but I went a little heavier duty plus an additional tensioner for $166 with free shipping. RCD...I went with the TC3831CAM FYI since we have the same tires. Thanks for all the advice! Ryan
-
I may only be able to afford 1 set. Anybody got a hook up? My tires are 35x12.5x18. Finding some online for about $100/pair not including tax and shipping which is $65 more.
-
Ok cool. For all 4 tires then? Or can I get by with just 2? (Just prioritizing my budget)

I ordered a set yesterday and it shipped today - nothing on back order. I now have a full set of verde pants, light weight jacket, and insulated jacket and a pair of vias pants. I'll add a light weight vias jacket at some point so I have a full set in each pattern.

Got in between this bull and his cows this morning and brought him into 35 yards.

Yes that was one of the Bulls u heard. They really tore up the trees that night.

So I got the elk hunter sleeping bags (awesome) for our late elk hunt and now I need to shop for insulated boots for my 16 yo boy and I. Not sure what I need but I don't want insulation overkill and light weight would be a plus. Shopping for 2 so price needs to stay on the lower end. Any recommendations?
-
We'll be primarily mobile but may sit a tank or 2 if the sign says to. Leaning towards lighter insulation and wool socks. Thx for the feedback.

Young bull. Couple more years and he could be nice IMO.
-
He gave quite a few opportunities to get himself killed if I had the tag. He finally just sulked off where he came from like he knew he'd been tricked. Lots of bugling at night but seemed to be picking up Monday.

It's a special extractor tool if u break a plug. This is the "how to" I followed I believe. He has a pic of the tool with part #. http://www.f150forum.com/f72/how-spark-plug-change-2004-2008-5-4-3v-v8-116291/

I bought the tool from CarQuest and ended up not needing it. All my plugs came out without breaking. Returned it for a full refund.

My boy drew his first bull tag - late rifle. This is our first really cold weather tag so I'm in the market for heavy duty cold weather sleeping bags (standard not mummy). Thinking -25*. I want these to be the last bags I ever need to buy but reasonable in price. Any advice?

Elk Hunter sounds like it will work perfect. Thanks for the responses.

I had 6as in 2010 and my dad had it 2 years in a row 2013 & 2014. I agree with minimal cow calling. I plan each hunt based on the wind - always into it. I agree with hunting hard - all day if possible. I do use a locator bugle. I carry a decoy and when we a sneek in we use it to cover us in case those cows pick up movement. In 6a dont be surprised to find the herd bull is a very young bull. Be prepared to run into other hunters chasing the same elk. Water/wallows is a good option but we prefer to chase bugles and get in front of the herd if possible.

I made one pretty similar. Works well but the bow eats a lot of dust if not covered.

I have the 12x9. Bonus room is used as kitchen/storage or you can sleep 2-3 more if needed. It says it's a 2 man setup but I can set it up by myself (without deploying the awning) in about 15 mins.

Here's the video of the 2014 44AE bighorn hunt guided by AZ Desert Outfitters that I was lucky enough to be a part of. The hunter, Dale, had put off potential back surgery for this hunt and made the most of his first stalk. There wasn't much time for video and what we got was a little shaky but the story of the hunt is in the video.
