Best Rifle Season (nov 25 to dec 4) units?
SunDevil replied to reece_mess16's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
if military, you should go on the base (no brainer). if you prefer to not hunt the base than go north of I10 or find a group to camp with. better to be safe than sorry.- 27 replies

there are lots of people that hold the opinion that a 243 is to small for elk

I got my 11 year old daughter a 7mm-08. The reason I chose this is the variety of ammunition available. Lots more than the 6.5 creedmore. for deer this last fall she used the 120 grain reduced recoil round from hornady. in the future she can move up to 150 grain for elk. I got her the Ruger American compact. it has a shortened stock and an 18 inch barrel. it shoots .75 inch groups at 100 yards. Now that I know it is accurate I am going to put a break on it. I also got the triclaw. she shot her first deer last Oct. 160 yards.

Jed Larsen from A3 killed a monster bull in that unit a couple of years ago. I do not know what his name is on CWT.com but the pics and story were on here. He is on FB

this might be wrong but I have always read and been told that in AZ the peak of the rut is on average considered to be Oct 1 which is right in the middle of that hunt.

You might need to have all the original velvet stripped off and fake velvet sprayed on

+1 on size of the kid? my daughter is only 11 and she is one of the smallest kids in her grade. that was one factor in deciding on a compact model. not sure I agree with factory ammo for the 6.5? maybe I was looking in the wrong places but I did not find many factory ammo options for that round. that was one of the things that contributed to my selection of the 7mm-08

+1 for the Ruger American Compact. Got that for my daughter and am very pleased. .75 inch groups at 100 yards out of the box with factory ammo. Trigger is a little stiff but I think that is okay for a kid. Very light. My only surprise was it has a plastic magazine. Thought it would have been metal. I went with the 7mm-08 so she can use it on elk in a couple of years. 120 grain reduced recoil rounds for now for deer and javelina.
