    let the rumors begin!!!

maybe someone could recommend to the NM G&F that for next year they advertise they will have the results available by June 22. internally they could target June 20. then when they post the results early they would have gradual traffic on the web. granted, once posted, word will spread quickly but that is a little less immediate as everyone, their dog and grandma hitting it on and off all day on June 20. just my $.02

Unhappy with my new coues mount

as AZ P & Y stated - it is all in the forms. there are a lot of forms out there and each taxidermist has their own favorites. I know my taxidermists only uses 1 or 2 different forms. he will get different poses but they are all from the same 1 or 2 makers. some other things regarding taxidermy work are: one, many taxidermists are moving to building the forms up with clay to provide more facial character. second, it is my understanding that after a cape is glued on, it shrinks. if the taxidermist pulls the cape tight during the gluing process, any 'character' that may exist will get pulled out (kind of like a face lift). I know the taxidermist I use is very careful to not use to big of a form or pull the cape tight during the gluing process. I am guessing the second mount is from a different taxidermist. I do agree with you. The mount you are talking about does have the eyes looking forward more. it also appears the form that was used has more of a rounded face to it than your other mount or from the field photo. Don't really know what you can do about it other than ask and see what the response is. Too bad you are not completely happy with it because that is a sweet buck. You are the one that is going to be looking at it every day and need to be satisfied with it. Let us know and good luck.

    Couple of Questions..

despite popular belief, it should be noted that you can glass game up using 15s without having them mounted on a tripod. yes it is more difficult but has and can be done. if the animals are far away you might not see them or if you do you probably will not get enough clear detail to make out bucks from does. if due to unique circumstances, getting on a tripod is not possible, find a place where you can rest both elbows on your knees. this should only be done short term. if you are going to be in a spot for awhile, break out the tripod. I also know a couple of guys that use walking sticks. the sticks have a hole in the end that their binocular tripod mount fits into and it is all set up to be right at eye level for them. once again, a very good short term solution to breaking out a tripod.

    Where can I find out

as Doug mentioned, there is a book called The Blue Book of Gun Values. It is updated every year and costs about $30. You can gind them at the gun shows. Sometimes you can even find used ones. Other gun websites include Auction Arms and Guns America. If you are serious about selling your guns I would be careful in asking the prices that people on the internet ask. In my opinion, the majority of the people listing guns on the internet are dealers that have their own shops. They are looking to get retail for their guns, have big inventories and can afford to sit on guns for awhile if they do not sell. Hopefully you will be able to find some true auctions for the 2 guns you are looking to sell and will be able to see what the market value for them is. Good luck. Send me a pm about the 20 gauge when you decide what you are going to be asking for it. I will be needing some youth guns in a few years. 870s tend to kick pretty good though. Chris.

    Favorite part of hunting?

what casey, you dont eat mac and cheese and ramen when you are out hunting? Jim feeds you to good!

    Favorite part of hunting?

my favorite part is finding out - 'you were not drawn for A, you were not drawn for B, you were not drawn for C' - NOT - so much for opportunity. seriously, there are several things I enjoy about hunting. one is the challenge. I am a competitive person by nature and the challenge of hunting these little deer is addicting. finding a good buck and successfully harvesting him is like winning the game. one of the others is similar to what others have mentioned, getting away from it all. after being away for a couple of hours, all the worries of life are left behind. when I am gone I miss my family and think of them often but the ability to get away from the rest of it is great. like casey said, when I am sitting behind my binos, I am locked in and focused on trying to find bucks. finally, I tend to eat better when I am out in the field than when I am home (dont let my wife read this).

    Photo bucket

I am not a photobucket expert. In fact, all the video of mine that is on photobucket has been emailed to other people and they have uploaded it to their photobucket account. It is my understanding that if you open access to allow everyone to view, it is for everything and you can not restrict what can and cant be seen. it is either all or nothing. hope this helps. chris.

    Video of that buck

nice to see you figured it out. nice buck also. a couple of things to keep in mind for future filming. you might have already thought of them but my buddy and I had to learn the hard way so now sense in recreating the wheel. 1 - try to get your recorder mounted onto your tripod. 2 - turn you digital zoom off. 3 - check into getting a doubler. it attaches to the outside of the recorder in front of the lens and doubles your magnification. if your recorder is 20X it will now be 40X and a lot clearer than the digital zoom. they cost about $40. good luck and thanks for sharing. chris.

Saw a nice buck while shed hunting

most cam corders today are the mini dv (mini tape) recorders and the footage stored on the tapes can be transferred and stored on a computer hard drive. you will need your cable to connect the cam corder to the computer and you will need to have the software on the computer that takes the footage off from the tape and writes it to your computers hard drive. OR - you can send me the tape along with the GPS coordinates of the buck you filmed and I will take care of it all for you. good luck. chris.

Saw a nice buck while shed hunting

your cam corder should have come with a cable and some software to download footage to your computer. once you get the footage on your computer you should have a still image function which will let you save one frame. that image could then be uploaded here. also, pick out the best 20 - 30 seconds and save that separately. 20 - 30 seconds will be about 3 meg. you can then upload that to photobucket or email it to someone who can. good luck and NICE buck! chris.

    AZGFD Hunt Recommendations

Hey Jim - thanks for all the input. I do have a couple of questions. First - is the 138 deer sample from unit 31 really a valid sample size. I read your post in the other thread about buck to doe ratios but personally think 138 is a little low. I could be wrong - it has been awhile since I took a stats class. Second - what is wrong with having the youth deer hunts in the southern units over Thanksgiving weekend? Third - isn't the youth harvest percentages you listed a pretty good correlator/indicator to the health of the mule deer herds on southern AZ? Thanks Chris.
