The funniest thing is this reminds me of a young mother telling everyone their revelation on children now they have one. No one's ever been through this before. It was common in my GF's day, my Dad's day, when I was young, all the way to today. This is nothing I haven't experienced in my 40 yrs of hunting at least every other year to one of my "secret spots", which have been hunted since time unending if there were animals there by someone. It's just amusing now, like listening to the young mother who knows all there is about children and how theirs will be special. Walking away nodding my head, sure/sure. Kent

Tree rat vs Desert Rat, since I'm a half breed I guess I can't take sides or really be accepted by either. It's funny, in my family history going back to the late 1800's the Tree rats were the educators, builders, farmers and yes hunters in this state. The Desert rat side were miners, ranchers, farmers and yes hunters. Who were more old school and closer to the land? Both. I don't know if I should be offended by both sides, just one or neither in that debate. I'll just smile it off but that's a large stretch either way to try and win this debate. Magazine articals are all a bunch of BS anyway, even the super hero's in the national mags's stories are elaborated beyond reality. I don't think this is a suprise. There were other hunts that were praised on here with animals that the hunt unit was known, they were right to be praised, no offence taken. It's the level of venom that is directed back and forth from guys I really like that aren't named Nate, that is concerning. If some venom comes my way for saying anything so be it, I'm part rattler also so won't hurt me. You Tree rats better go to Vegas or something this weekend, us Desert rats are coming up. Have a great weekend all and a safe 4th. Kent

This has to be more than someone read a magazine artical. No one gets this mad unless it's personal. This is frothing at the mouth, mad. Insiteing others that have no idea what the story is or really about. Insulting anyone that doesn't automatically see it your way. You should have kept it private. Without having a link or copy of the story provided all I see is a guy killed a really big buck, was excited and made money on it with an article and maybe some promotions. As far as getting so excited he told a little to much, like he killed it around Globe in the Pinals, and you guys just put all that out right here. I've seen the same from guided clients on the internet when they were excited also, I saw nothing wrong with that but where was the public outrage then. Outfitters promote units and areas on their websites or to clients all day long, generating more interest than a mag article. Wonder how these oldschool unwritten laws apply to that. Now I'm not against the outfitting industry in most cases but I'm not going to be insited into a rage over some lucky guy that only did the same thing that happens all the time in a less than experienced way, make money on a big animal. WOW! great necklace beads and nettle also. Need to get some leather string and string those beads, your wife can wear them 1000 yrs after. Kent

That's the problem with this post. The first one almost sounds like a backdoor promo to generate interest and sales. So there's going to be all kinds of speculation on what's going on without facts. My experience tells me the truth is usually in the middle. Kent

How many guys are calling this one area Their honeyhole? For those of us that won't bother reading the mag, is this a GPS coor, general area or a hunt unit that was given out? Kent

If you are hunting and can check out license plates at the same time, must not be too big of a secret. I didn't know Az had any secret areas left, only ones people have no desire to go into. I guess it's alright to divulge secret trophy areas to clients or whoever if they are willing to pay, I'm sure they'll keep it hush, hush. After one year and all the hordes have come and seen no trophy animals from the roads, word will spread of the wasteland and it will become even less crowded thereon after, did you a favor. Don't know a bit about any of it, just some amusing thoughts I had. Kent

Amanda, did you inspect the area above for evidence of foundation rocks or pottery shards? The Salados buried pretty much as we do today, 5 to 6 ft deep, laid flat. The Hohokam were cremation and put in a pot not far under the ground. The ones above the rim and north were flexed, bent at the waist and put in a deep hole with a slab of rock over the top of the body. Kent

The light colored sediment is humped over the body simular to how it would be if it was a burial and the dirt put back but not compacted the same. If it's a ruin the Forest service is the one to call if on public land. Be careful, digging in a ruin or even taking a shard is a federal offence, unless on private property. If you really want to know the answers find an old time digger, they could look at that and in 5 mins tell you who, what , where and when in detail with history. Kent

It is almost certainly a 800 yr old skeleton, and more than likely a burial in a ruin. There are thousands of Salado ruins in the Globe, Tonto Basin, Cherry Creek area and Anasazi stretching north well into Colorado where there's an estimated 20,000 ruins around Dolores, Co. I have found one roomers to 100 roomers. Every ruin had someone live their life there and many had deaths and burials there also. The dead were buried in the patios to keep them close. In large multi generational ruins that were established for a couple hundred years there could be 100 burials or more. Many times they dug down and hit an older burial and would put the new one on the bottom and the old remains scattered on top. There is always tiny pieces of charcoal mix in the dirt, maybe a religious meaning. Many times hunting I'll find a ruin on the lower slopes overlooking Tonto Basin, usually a 2 to 4 roomer. I'll stand there and look out towards the Tonto and Salt arms and Rosy. Imagining the site someone else had of those monster ruins below with the fires in the evenings spread out as the darkness approachs and the 100,000 souls going about their daily lives in the hayday. It must have been something, it must have been full of hardship, life was probably short, your world would have been small, Happiness and joy were probably, fleeting and treasured, at best. I wish I could go back and see but not live it. Kent

Looked like a good day to get away, Thanks. Kent

Just got back from some scouting and picked up my first ever game cam pics. I definately need to adjust my angle and made some rookie mistakes but it wasn't all bad. I also discovered the cause of the mysterious moving trail cams........ it's aliens. I actually got a few pics of animals. This bull thought he was all that and then gave me the razzberry. Then the Alien mother ship arrived And here are the aliens, they moved my cam 45degs and down. A turkey and coyote. I did find a Coues shed on the bench close to the cam, that's what I'm really scouting for, and a matching pair of elk sheds above the bench. All-in-All a good deal. No deer or bear pics, that's what I'm after. Kent

It very well could be a burial in an ancient ruin and the creek has cut into the patio where the burials are. If there is pottery on the ground and rock foundations close. Also look at the dirt above the bones, if there is small pieces of charcoal mixed in from close to the top to the bottom, it would be a burial. 5 ft is about right. Looks like alot of mixed dirt above, most likely it's in a ruin. Kent

Really nice, kids having fun is always great. That's a $20.00 crawdad. Depending on the size, the kids will get money to let them pinch on their finger, That's definately a 20.00 dad. Kent

Cool! any love notes? Definately a contender. Kent

Mike, I think that's rain, looks like maybe a little storm came through and lightning on the bright one with rain a few minutes later. Probably wind turned the cam, the straping system is crappy and I can't get it tight to the tree. I'm going to modify it and put it out again. Wasn't bad for the cheapest cam at Basspro and 70.00, I wish I had better pics of the bulls antlers. This spot is less than 20 miles from you, you might know it, Gino probably does. Kent

Another .270 Winchester question
krp replied to king4wd's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Most likely there was just something happening to the crono today, sunlight, clouds, distance, blast something. I once went out to the range with my 270 and it read 3250 exactly, then another 3250, exactly, then I got an error, then 3250. It was cloudy or I had it too close to the muzzle, something. I quit that gun for the day and tried it again another with the rest of the loads, 2980 to 3000, never had a strange reading again, probably aliens. I just don't think 3174 is doable with a full case of H4831 in a 22 in tube, but if you try it again take precautions. 60 grs will be compressed and normally just under max pressure. Kent -
Wouldn't suprise me and have nothing to do with archers killing more than their share of animals. Let's see, an app fee and tag fee for a spring deer tag, then you can apply for a fall tag with new app and tag fees, then there'll be the new draw for late winter app and tag fee. Why should you get to hunt three seasons and only pay for two tags as it is now, you guys were way to spoiled when all you had to pay was for one tag and hunt three seasons. Of course these are just rumors and I'm just joking, seriously, really. Kent

there are reasons for doing either. Neck sizing reduces the stretching back and forth of the brass extending it's life, also leaving it formed to your chamber for a custom fit. After 3 to 5 shots it will have expanded to the point you can feel the tightness as you close the bolt. At that point you need to full length or like Mike said just bump the shoulder back with your FL die and trim, that's what I do. I see no difference in accuracy from neck or bump sizing or full length for that matter in hunting loads. My dedicated, in the field hunting loads are always bumped back and cycled to insure reliability, just feel better in my mind. Slide action or lever action guns need to always be FL sized. Kent

Everyone's life is a little different. The proposal is for 30 tags in the 5 regions not units that don't have a dec youth hunt. That's 150 tags total in the state plus the 30 already available. Sometimes it's not just about getting out of school but in the case of being on a sports team that plays every weekend, the decision may be between being loyal to your teammates or going hunting. It's a small issue to some and a big issue to others. I would have liked to see the one and done per species on the youth hunts, then into the main draw addressed. I would also like to see the tag price for youths to be the lower price for all hunts not just the designated youth hunts. In Colorado, at least last year, a NR youth pays 100.00 for an elk tag total, that's less than the license and tag price for a Res youth here. Kent

I took the survey mainly for the youth issues, at least they listened to some comments but there were others that were important that they ignored. The most hotly debated issues and seemingly important to many of us never got a sniff, goes to show that we don't really know what's important to the real public. Kent
