300 RUM Load Data With 210 Berger VLDs
azgutpile replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
They emailed this to me a 3 years ago. 210 grain berger VLD (Retumbo) 85.5 grains (start) 2,844 fps--- to 92 grains (max) --- approximate max velocity is 3,035 fps with a 99.2 fill ratio. Wht_mtnman- what velocities are you getting with your Schneider? I'm getting 3,050 fps with 86 grains of H1000. -
Most of the time yes, but if I'm going to leave ruts then I'm packing it out.

lower quality 6x20x40 or higher quality 4x14x40?
azgutpile replied to apache12's topic in Long Range Shooting
The new HD series are surprisingly heavy, at least compared to similar scopes. I would go with reliability and clarity of the Zeiss HD, plus you get more elevation adjustment than the old conquests. -
I haven't received the whole story, but a friend of mine took his family camping up there over the 4th and they had a bear come into came and refuse to leave. This is with him yelling and shooting his gun off to scare it away. An officer ( dont know if it was FA or GF) hear the commotion and stopped by noticed the bear had no fear and shot or shot at the bear. They were supposed to bring out the hounds the next day and that's all I know.

Think about this… If you’re not currently in either the top bonus point group or the group just below it, you will probably never benefit from the bonus point round.

Does it have an adjustable objective?

How do you like the tipi and stove and how much does the stove weigh?

Another pack to consider is Stone Glacier...They are a minimalist back that would compare to the Kifaru High Camp.

Newbie for coues needing a little help
azgutpile replied to cvitech2's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Since you have 6 people, the only way to guarantee that everybody hunts together ( 4hunters max per application) is to pick a unit with 100% draw rate and only put in for that hunt. This usually limits you to early whitetail hunts. The other thing you need to consider is that a lot of the southern units have access issues, which can very well be the reason for the leftover permits. I did a quick search on the AZGFD website and it mentions that 30A & 30B have a lot of access issues, and in unit 32 that several ranchers have locked up some of the gates blocking off parts of the wilderness. -

The any antlered deer hunts are mainly mule deer hunting units that sometimes have pockets of Whitetail... It has nothing to do with deer density. -

If you are set on hunting southern Arizona, I would abandon the mule deer hunting and stick to Coues. If they are set on hunting mule deer, I would suggest looking at a different unit or different state. -
Digiscope adapter - anyone use this one?
azgutpile replied to scoutm's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
They work fine; however, if you are already carrying an iphone, the Kowa iphone adapter seems to work better. The Outdoorsman is supposed to have their own version as well. -
(32) 5-6 points, (33) 7-8 point, (35a) 3-4 points
-
Here are a couple examples. If you pick unit 22 it will take at least 8 bps to reach the bonus point round with 6% odds for 7 points 36a will take 4 points to reach the bp round with a 12% chance with 3 points.

Which unit. The northern units are a lot tougher to get a tag.

Buy a new barrel or buy a new gun?
azgutpile replied to 123456's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Hart, Kreiger, Schneider, broughton and Pac-Nor are know to make great barrels and if you ever plan to shoot prone, I would look for a muzzle brake that doesn't have ports on the bottom. I have a Defensive Edge brake that will be going on my next build. -

azgutpile replied to 123456's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
A sendero is still just a rem 700 with nothing special other than a hs precision stock and polished reciever. If he already has a rem 700 adding a custom barrel in his desired contour would give him a better shooting gun and better piece of mind knowing he added the barrel of his choice in the contour, length, fluting of his choice. +1 If I had a Sendero, I would probably sell it and purchase a basic 700 action and have it trued and then add a custom barrel. -

azgutpile replied to 123456's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Your probably looking at $310-$350 for a barrel plus another $300-$400 thread, chamber, crown and brake. I don't know how we'll your factory rifle shoots now, but the new barrel should get you under 1/2 MOA. -
Nice Rifle...Who did the work for you and what taper did you go with? Also, what scope are you putting on it?

Custom build. What caliber would you go with?
azgutpile replied to briant_az's topic in Long Range Shooting
With a #5 barrel you can usually get away with low rings. -

So it sounds like "270" moved to Show Low and now works at Cal Ranch. -
The young road is similar to the 191 with a few less hair pin turns. A good part of it is still dirt with dropoffs. The only two realistic choices are the 60 thru the canyon or 87 thru payson.
