AZGFD out of line? Closes 34a bear hunt, and then reopens it???
Siwash replied to AZBearhunter's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
This happened in 2012 in 35B and if I recall AZGFD got confused about quotas between the early general season, which was met, and the sow quota during the archery season, which was not met when they closed it after the first or second week of the season in May. I don't think they blamed that one on hermaphrodite bears though, just plain old fashioned ignorance. -
I like blondes too.

Sand Hill Crane Guide
Siwash replied to Big Browns's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I joined my buddy on the 2nd hunt in November south of Wlllcox last year, he took a Crane on that hunt and in '12. There were a lot of birds on the later hunt, mostly high flyers. You can pattern them and get out in the dark and try to shoot them as they come off their beds to feed early, or set up where they feed and hope to get a shot. If you do pull a tag after the first hunt it looked like the cranes we saw were smart enough to avoid decoys, but it might be a good move on the first hunt before they are all shot up and wise. It was really cool to see and hear the birds in the air, there were literally hundreds of them. You might be able to pull a leftover if you didn't get to put in for them. -

Was at Sportsman's tonight and they had blued Tikka T3 Lites on sale for $449 in .243 , 7mm-08 and a few other calibers I cannot remember. That's a good deal for anyone in the market for a good shooter.

***SOLD*** I have an old (like circa 1910-1920) Ithaca "Flues" field grade side by side 20 gauge for sale. Dual trigger, 28" barrels, mod/full choke, bluing is worn (see pics), center bead missing and slight dent in right barrel (see pic). Barrels have moderate pitting. Wood is in good shape for its age. Shot a limit of doves with it last September and 100 rounds of sporting clays. Functions fine with standard load 2 3/4" shells and the gun is LIGHT (maybe 5#). Asking $350, not interested in trades. Pristine models fetch upwards of $1K on Gunbroker. If there are any Ithaca experts who have more insight about this gun feel free to PM me or post it here. Shotgun is in Tucson. Thanks for looking.

Thanks guys, more details on the gun: it is a vintage 1911 Ithaca Flues Field Grade model. Met with another member tonight and although he decided the gun wasn't for him he did measure the bores and found out the chokes had been opened up and they are both around .14, so more like dual modified barrels, making it all the better as a bird gun. The gun was designed at a time when 2 1/2" shells were the norm. I shot it with standard load 2 3/4" 8 shot without issue, but you can still get really great 2 1/2" shells from RST: http://www.rstshells.com/ I'm going to list it on Shotgun World next week, but before I do it's $300 local in Tucson on here.

SOLD

Right now it is sold pending funds.

Numbers make sense to me. Our herd numbers pale in comparison to many states, and the size of our state is massive in relation to many others making the chance of a collision that much more unlikely, especially since our largest metropolitan area, Phoenix, offers less than ideal habitat for deer.

I'm a lefty, primary reason it is for sale. Maybe a 20 gauge O/U.

TTT in case anyone in the Valley is interested...passing through the east side en route to the Rim tomorrow AM. Also found 40 pieces of once fired brass I'll throw in too.

Reload virgin. Question on 270 load
Siwash replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Maybe I'm misreading your post, but are you saying you are shooting 230 grains bullets in your .270? 130 grain sounds more accurate. Hopefully you have been saving your brass, lately it is one of the more costly investments for reloading. If your buddy already has .270 dies great, if not, buy Redding. You can buy SST's pretty cheap by the 100, and Nosler Ballistic Tips (very similar bullet) are also available in boxes of 50. Neither one of those bullets has been scarce from the shelves the last few times I've looked for bullets. I'd suggest starting with H4831 or IMR 4831 or W760 as a powder at 50ish grains and work your way up. Measure the OACL in the factory SSTs and replicate it for starters. A pound of powder should get you 120+ charges for most .270 loads, so figure on around 60 bucks for 100 bullets, a pound of powder and a pack of 100 primers (go with Winchester or CCI). I doubt you can buy 100 rounds of factory SSTs for less than 100, so you are already saving money and getting to know more about your rifle.
