Looking to do a stock upgrade on my .270....is this a good one?
Siwash replied to Viper's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
No on loctite, but I would apply some grease to the threads of your action bolts and as others have said the Wheeler Fat Wrench is decent for the money. -
You insulate the cot right? If you put a sleeping pad, heavy blanket or second second sleeping bag over the cot it usually mitigates most of it in cold weather...

pm sent, will take them if they are still available.

100# braid matching 6# mono diameter doesn't sounds correct. Your rod guides should be OK but if you have conventional reel and plan on catching fish that will run like heck or making sure you wind back evenly on the retrieve you might pick up something like this for your finger. I use something similar when I cast and strip in saltwater with fly line.

If it''s for a Tikka it will fit a Tikka and nothing else barring some pretty major inletting; the recoil lug is bedded in the stock. I have one of these on my Tikka .270, I like it a lot and that is a nice price.

Headed to San Jose Del Cabo in late May for 5 days, will fish two full days while I am down there. Anyone have experience with guides/outfits to book with, or to watch out for? Most likely I'll charter a 25-30' boat for two one day after billfish, etc, and another by myself in a panga.

We fished with Gordo Banks yesterday out of Puerto Los Cabos. We had several marlin sightings and two takedowns along with this striped marlin. They said it was 180# at the docks. Captain wanted it "para mi familia." After we got the marlin we fished for school tuna; skipjack and yellowfin. We caught several of each but they were all rats. I did cracker off about a 40# yellowfin which was a bummer, I fought it almost as long as the marlin. I am headed out tomorrow solo on a panga and hope for wahoo and dorado.

2016 Tucson Mule Deer Foundation Banquet - 5.21 at Starr Pass
Siwash replied to Siwash's topic in The Campfire
A bump for the Tucson MDF. -
http://www.tucsonmdf.org/2016-banquet.html Posting this for a friend involved with Tucson MDF, they have a ton of great prizes to give away, right now odds are 1:6 for the gun raffle as current attendance is low. If you buy a table for 10 you also get a free gun of your choice...check out the link and if you are around on Saturday 5.21 it's a great time for a great cause. I will be purchasing one seat but family engagements won't let me attend.

I have done a few glass bed jobs on wood stocks. I have only used Brownell's Acraglas. It works. As others have said, bedding the front recoil and rear tang area is safe and easy and a good place to start. Prep is the most important thing. Spend most of your time with sanding/cleaning/taping/prepping. If you are going to go ahead and bed the action area you might consider sanding down the barrel channel so the barrel is floated. Here are some pics from a recent job Note most will tell you to remove your scope before you bed a rifle...that's good advice, but if you look at my pics I put in dummy screws so the action was just "secured" in the stock during the bedding process, about 30 hours later it came out with just a light tap...release agent is your friend, don't skimp on it and your action won't be married to the stock forever. There are a lot of videos and tutorials online that can help you get started.

I used to attend the shoots regularly, but have not in the last few years. It's a great club with nice people. Their "big" shoot is every March in Texas Canyon as part of the Triple Crown (might be called something else now). They were doing a team shoot in December @ TMP, but usually every shoot at TMP is a fun shoot. It's worth it to become a member (shoots are like $10 after your annual dues) and to buy the Pima County Annual Range pass if you want to start going. Outside of being a lot of fun, it's a great way to judge yardage and learn about shot placement on animals at varying slopes/quartering angles. Bring more arrows then you think you will need if it is your first time, and don't get too upset if you miss and have to beat the brush to find your arrow, if it survived. Here is their website: http://www.desertarchers.com/

Up for sale is a lefty factory synthetic Tikka T3 Lite stock. Housed a .300WSM for several years, but it looks like Tikka stocks do not distinguish between long/short action as measurements are exact same on my lefty Tikka T3 Lite .270. Stock is circa 2008 and has been hunted with for several years but there are no major dings or scratches (one minor one of the left side of the buttstock). It does show wear consistent with use. Aluminum recoil lug included (on Tikkas, these free float in the stock and are not attached to the action). Should also note barrel is fully floated at the factory and these stocks are a tight fit to the action. I put it on my food scale and it was right around 1.7 pounds. They go for like $500+ (???!!!) on Brownells. How about $75 ? I'm in Tucson, not interested in shipping it but do hit the valley on occasion so we could work something out. Will probably be selling a pepper Tikka lefty Boyd's laminate that is glass bedded in the near future too.

This guy is in central PHX not too far from 51/Glendale and I think his stuff is good: https://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/spo/5413758793.html I have the set up in the 7th pic, bought a 12" gong, a-frame & gong hooks from him, used conduit I had laying around as a stand for the rest.

All rods sold pending funds except this one: 1. Custom Rainshadow Blank 9' casting rod, 8-12# 3/8-3/4 ounce. 2 piece. Was my bobber and jig rod, would be great for fishing jigs at Lee's Ferry from boat or bank. Grey rod with blue wraps on Fuji guides; this is a cool rod and in nice shape, probably only fished it a dozen times. $60

I'm slowly transitioning to fly only for freshwater fishing and have a few quality casting rods I don't feel like I need. They were primarily used (and designed) for Salmon/Steelhead fishing but could make great swimbait rods, striper rods or jig rods at Lee's Ferry. I also have a first gen Curado CU-200 with a right hand retrieve. Rods 1-2 would cover you for most of the freshwater fishing in AK (definitely might wanna bump it up if you are going after big Kings) and rods 3-4 would also be excellent for sockeye, trout and steelhead in AK or anywhere else. Rods located in Tucson. Only trades considered would be for conventional saltwater reels, saltwater spinning reel, or 9' 4wt fly rod. If anyone buys 1/2 together I have a rod tube that fits both of them, ditto that for 3/4. 1. Shimano Curado Sold 2. SPF 3. SPF 4. $60 5. SPF Thanks for looking.

Thanks guys, although it's not that far of a cab ride from San Jose Del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas, I'll probably fish out of San Jose. Right now Gordo Banks looks good. I'll post my experience here and if anyone does know of an outfit in San Jose proper please let me know.

I would agree with this and if you only have a few hours to fish you could spend most of it fishing runs above the confluence. There is a parking pullout at the confluence but be aware sometimes the bank immediately below the Paria confluence is treacherous, I have gone almost knee deep in the soft bank before, and it can be sticky. Make sure you have good waders because the water is cold and before you venture out even to water mid calf, cast from the bank, fish will often hold 5-6' or closer from the bank. I'd use a double nymph rig under an indicator or a big dry fly as an indicator with a nymph below. As said most small zebra midges will work along with a san juan worm. If you can make a day of it I'd suggest a guide over renting a boat. I've done both (and fished the walk in a several times too) and when everything is said and done the boat rental isn't as good of a deal as a guide. Have fun!
