Are you ready for the long shot? I am...
QUEST replied to shortpants's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I would have to agree with all the comments on here. Last year my wife harvested a mule deer buck at 762 yards with one shot from my 300 rum 180 Nosler Partition traveling at 3250 fps, no wind. One thing that wasn't mention was bullet construction. You don't need a big magnum to shoot long distances. I've been researching the 7mm WSM and its interesting looking at Berger Bullets with 168 gr its BC .617. If you could get a load that would push 168 gr at 3000 fps well that would be one great set up. quest -

That sounds good. If he gets one is he going to get it mounted by a taxidermist? I have a friend that needs a Coues cape call me if he doesn't need it.

Alex sorry I missed you at the meeting point. Got lost too! But I did see 30 Does opening day but no bucks...how about you?

Hey Alex that country looks good around there.

I went over there scouting opening day of the Oct hunt. I wouldn't have went if I knew it was opening day. I did scout the south end of the Sierrita mtns. Did run across one hunter with a nice buck. There was a lot of hunters. Seen a few does. I plan on returning there on opening day of the early Nov hunt this week. I'm going by myself and would love to have some company but my partner has to stay home. I'm a little worried about the UDA'S. Border Patrol was thick in those areas. We found lots of clothes and backpacks thrown by the wayside. If there's anyone out there looking for a hunting partner for safety purposes only, I'm available. I plan to go by myself no matter what but like I said, would enjoy the company. quest

Well we scouted on opening day of the Oct hunt, ha ha. If I had known I wouldn't of went. Anyhow we did see some Coues deer and got to talk to a lucky hunter who had just harvested his buck. A nice 3X3 with eye guards. We also seen some Mule deer. One was a small 2X2 buck. There was a lot of hunter all over the unit (36A). The weather was cool. All in all it was a fun trip and everyone that we talk to and informed them we were just up here to scout for our Nov hunt were real nice. quest

I plan on doing some scouting this coming Friday North West side of the Sierrita Mountains off of 286. I don't know the area. On the map it looks good around Black Hills and north of there. My question is, does any one know the name or number of the roads I could take off of Hwy 286 that would get me in the area around the base of Sierrita Mountains? I did try to look it up on Game and Fish website but it wasn't the info I needed. Any help would be most appreciated. I had a posted this subject awhile back about this unit but am unsure as to how to go back in and search for the info offered. There were some helpful replies and I would like to thank every one that gave me advise especially the person who offered to have me come with them scouting. Unfortunately I was unable to get the time off to go but with them but now I have a window of opportunity and would like to use it. So once again, HELP Please! Thx quest

Ive got a tag for that unit m77. I haven't had a chance to get down there to check it out. Does that unit have a lot problem with illegals? quest

I hope it works for you EdD270. If you need to verify the load info you can call Barns at 1-800-574-9200. This is a high density load. What that means with this powder and load it fills the case and that's why I only went with 58.5 grs you could go more but I didn't like a case that full. So I tapped the side of my cases with my finger after I filled them with powder to settle the powder inside the case. Anyway that load shoots tight groups.

I used this gunsmith in Mesa on my rifle he did a great job. Accuracy Speaks Gun Smithing, Mesa AZ 85207.

Thanks again.

I have a Leupold scopes. Its one of the best scope out there. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a Nikon scope either, both scope company's offer long range capability. At my age I don't notice parallax issue. I sent my scope off and had a custom rectical installed long before they came out with these new ones like Boone and Crockett rectical by Leupold. If you plan on shooting pass 600 yards I would go with Lee dot and a Leuplod scope. Just my thoughts

WHT_MTNMAN thanks for the info. I was thinking of checking out the north west area.

vegasjeep its about 36A. I have hunted 34A and did see some nice bucks there. I was more interested on getting my son a buck and my wife hers. I was able to put my son on 3 bucks. One was a spike the other two were three points. Then I manage to get my wife on her buck a spike. I was ready to go home when my wife said lets hunt one more place and we did. I seen another 3 point about 300 yards out but the son was in a bad place and block my view through my scope anyway I let him go. Oh well. quest

edD270 the powder is IMR 4350, 58.5 grs. Barns 110 tsx tip at 3350 fps. That's through a chronograph. The rifle is a SPS 700 Remington, 22 inch barrel. I hope this helps you. You can go to Big Game Info and go to there big game info ballistics you'll get the drop info if you want. The B.C is .377 I believe.

I have a Leopold scope with dots installed out 1000 yards. If you buy a Leopold scope you can send it off to LEE DOT. They'll install the dots for you. You need to know your bullets BC the velocity and altitude you'll be hunting. Tell them what yards you plan on zeroing your rifle in and that's it. It works very well! I don't like the dial-up knobs because they can lay on your body and turn the knob. The next thing you know you zero at 600 yards. Ziess scope would be the other option .
-
Do you reload? If you do I would use the 110 barns bullets tsx. It exit my wife rifle at 3350 fps. We sighted it in at 200 yrds. Groups of 1/2 inch.

stanley it all sounds good to me. I'll take you up on the Pm. I'm still learning how to do things on here. how do you post any pics and how do you PM? Another problem we have is were going to Wyoming in Sept for mule deer and a doe antelope hunt and we don't have much time but I can check things out later if I have to.

Just trying to get a feel for the unit stanley. We hunted unit 34A last year and we saw 3 bucks that were in the 70-80 range. There was a lot of does. It's not a big deal for me to harvest a buck but I would like to get my wife one. Last year I was able to put her on her first buck, a spike. I then mounted it for her and entered it in our taxidermy show and got a 2nd place ribbon in the open division. I could post a pic but I'm still trying to figure things out. All info is well appreciated. quest
