Not sure what was up with the line in the text? Guess you can still read it.

Hotel in Portal has been booked. I will still do a little camping and campfire in the early evenings I suppose.

I can't agree more. You just never know how many times someone ran over a used bow....not that I have done that I think I will check out the used market and see whats out there. My bow is not bad. Its just getting old and figured it would be nice to have newer technology.

I have the first hunt. We were thinking of camping near Paradise. Now thinking about getting a room in Portal....just so I can sleep at night!
-
I think I'm going to give it a shot. I fugure as long as I'm well armed and keep eveything locked up nobody should bother me. I will be hunting the northeastern end of the Chiricahua's. Not exactly right next to the border. Keeping fingers crossed.

Are you planning on camping? Any conerns with illegals and drug runners? I got this unit too for the first time in ten years and am wondering if camping is a good idea?
-
ooooohhhh??, so there are other hunts going on right now other then the OTC tags? It's got to be the same photo (velvet bull shot on July 4th). I think I do remember reading about some hunt you could apply for and had to wait for a call from azgfd before you could go.
-
Has anyone scrolled through the pictures at the azgfd website that hunters have sent in? There is a picture of a guy who shot a nice 5x6 velvet bull on July 4th. A friend of mine bought that tag and we went out on Jan 1st (south of I-40 between Holbrook and Winslow). I swear we were chasing around sign from two elk the entire trip, and ended up seeing them run out of the unit before shooting light on our last day. I'm wondering if this guy found the end of the rainbow, or if one puts in enough time there are some decent bulls to be had on this tag??????
-
To his credit, the crowd was booing him for no reason. Did I miss something? He destroyed Mir and got "boo" for it??????????????

I've killed a lot of deer in 29. I have never been there in December, but one would think that would be even easier. I've run into situations where all we are seeing is doe, and I chalk it up to the fact there was a full moon. Be in place before sun up! You are not doing much wrong when you see 50-70 deer. If you get the tag again PM me, and I'll let you know where we've killed quite a few bucks over the years.

That's all you have to do.

I put in for an early strip tag this year and was wondering if anyone has pics of good deer they shot on this early hunt. I've been reading a bit about the hunt, and obviously the bigger deer are taken on the late hunt. Just wanting to see what I can possibly look forward to.
-
Very nice deer. It's also good to hear you saw some bigger bucks. Now I'm slightly fired up.
-
Oh, that's good to hear. Pending the migration, that will determine if I hunt high or low. I was under the impression they summered in an area outside the unit. Do deer migrate south out of Utah into this unit, or do they all come off the Grand Canyon Rim?
-
I put in for 12AW. Sorry, I thought everything north of the Grand Canyon was considered the "strip". I was just reading how the major part of the migration doesn't happen until later in November. I'm sure there are some there in Early November, but just not sure how many.

we were catfishin and he hit cut carp Wow! I was always told a bass would not take a dead/lifeless bait. Were you jigging it or did he just pick it up off the bottom?

More Northern Az Whitetail Q/A
CouesKilla replied to peakandplateau's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
It seems like I see more bucks around 12 to 2 in the middle of the day during full moons. -
I'm kind of curious about this. It sounds like you registered your quad for off-road use only. I got the "half and half" registration where you are registered for off-road and partial on-road. My plate is the same as a plate you would see on a street motorcycle with the MC on it. I did put a horn and rear view mirror on. I assume that makes me fully legal for street use. I have heard about the tire thing, but am wondering if I need insurance now?

I've noticed the rut is not taking place until late September the past few years. This is a good set-up for the muzzy hunt, but a bit late for the bow hunt. The bow hunt is always good, just requires a bit more patience then the late Sept. muzzy hunt. They bugle all September long it seems which is all you need to locate them. I base all of my info from areas closer to Flagstaff. Alpine may get cooler quicker, but according to the biologists it's all dependant on length of day, which leads one to beleive temp./moisture has nothing to do with it. You should have a great hunt regardless. Good luck!

My brother and I are going to head up to watch these guys who actually know what they are doing. We were up there last Wednesday (very windy) and Thursday (good morning). Water temp was right around 59 degrees, so we thought we would have a good trip. Needless to say we only caught 4 fish over the day and half (one crappie and 4 bass). Forced to fish without a trolling motor may have had a lot to do with that. I'm taking my bino's and going to steal some tips from the pros this weekend.

I had someone at the marina tell me that the boats were to have cameras on the last day in order to televise. Does anybody know if this will be aired?

3A&C archery Bull and 4B Rifle Antelope
CouesKilla replied to THOR's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
It's not like these units are so big you can not scout them over a few weekends. What have you been doing for the past 18 years? I suggest parking on the side of I-40 (make sure you get outside the state right of way) and hunt next to Chevlon Creek. That way if you do get one you could possibly build a small boat and float the animal back to the road. You'll barely have to leave the hard top. Just remember it's illegal to shoot across roads. If it isn't obvious, I'm just hacking on you. Get out there and find your own spots. That's half the fun! -
those last two pictures really shed new light on that bull. You don't really see the great main beam length in the first three pics. Awsome mount!

What do you think this bull scores
CouesKilla replied to Huntn coues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I'm having trouble getting more then 340, but it looks bigger then 340 so I guess 345. -
I think just about everyone that has posted has commented on how nice of a bull that is. You are just a little butt hurt that people are questioning your score. You posted this on a discussion forum. Nobody has bashed anything. It's just fun discussion. Maybe he is a lot thicker then he appears, maybe there are stickers we can't see in the photo. None of it matters. Score aside, I'll say again that is a very nice bull for any age person.
