Noel Arnold replied to creed_az_88's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I went scouting last week for the first time. I am a 43 year native of Arizona and I have never seen grass so high.It made for hard walking in the rocky areas.Last weekend was not the best weather conditions due to a little rain and wind . I did not see any buck's that were shooters for me.I do not know if it was due to the weather or feed conditions. I think it was more weather. At least I hope. Noel -

My Office is in surprise.I took one of my buddys hunting three years ago.It was his first coues hunt and he shot a buck that a guy in Surprise mounted. His name is Doug Hinshaw. Were you the guy that mounted it ?Doug has moved to Nevada but he sent me a picture of his mount and it looked very good. Noel

It has been about 12 years since I have been drawn for the Dec. hunt.(yes that is sarcism)But I do remember that when the rut kicks in on the big ones(usually the last three day's of the hunt) You could see a big buck any time of the day and any place.Of course if it is hot then it would be more of a early or late thing.I have been hunting the oct. for the last five years and have glassed big bucks bedded right out in the open in the early morning sun. I agree with desertbull. The one thing that I have felt has hurt the future closure of road's is the abuse of quad's.I have nothing against them and have finally broke down and bought one myself. But there are enough people out there that drive off the roads and abuse the land that it is going to screw it up for all the law abidding people. I shot a bear that had 6 inch pad and squared 6feet seven inches and scored 20 and 10/16 ths. But the 6 inch pad was on the bear itself not in the mud. It is going to be wider in the mud then the animal. Noel

How far do you live from your spot?
Noel Arnold replied to jamaro's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Way farther then I like. It takes over 7 hours to get to my best whitetail spot. This includes a 2 and 1/2 hour bounce on a dirt road.I only get to make one scouting before the hunt.We only have carp here in the Wickenburg area. Noel -
Congrats on a awesome buck. Stalking him makes it even better.Does anybody know what the average % of loss due to velvet is ?I am guessing 3% to 4%. Noel

Congratulations on a great deer and great picture. Noel

Yeah I guess it is a optical illusion.Regardless it is one awesome buck. Noel

It is hard enough for a buck to grow a perfect 4 point. But for a coues to grow a typical five is very rare.Is that a arizona or mexico buck? Noel

It is probally a big pig. The pig is above the water and the deer is below. That is one of the reasons the deer looks smaller. Noel -
Great horns. What did the brown five point score?

Lark, I agree it is not easy shooting a 40 inch buck in any circumstances. I was just wondering what the opinions of everybody.I remember a few years ago that somebody bought a auction tag in Utah.He ended up shooting one of the all time biggest typicals. He had a whole lot of guides finding this buck for him.But what was the funny part to me was in one of the magazines it said something like huge public lands buck.Yes it was shot on public lands, but under the same circumstances as our auction tags.If I had a auction coues tag every year for 10 years.I could pretty well guarantee you that I could average 110 points gross over those ten years.Without the help of any guide. So that said I feel any animal shot on a auction tag does not mean the same degree of diffulculty as a regular hunt. This whole discussion I have never bad mouthed the hunters .I am curious about some of your opinions on taking a trophy animal on a hunt like this.Do you guys think it is as much of a acomplishment as taking a trophy on a general hunt.I do not. Here is a example. My dad went to mexico on a unguided hunt and shot a 130 buck.He has shot numerous big bucks in Arizona on public hunts. But none of them have been quite that big.He is the first to tell you that the bucks in Arizona were more of a acomplishment.Do not get me wrong.I am not judging these auction tag holders.I am just trying to see what other peoples feelings are about this.

Michael, This is just fun talk to pass the time until my oct. coues hunt. Noel

Michael, Yes I have a rear end (And my wife say's it is sexy) He He!!!! When We had this discussion a few month's ago I said I really do not like the raffle that much either. It is just the lesser of two evil's.The main point I was trying to make when I started this conversation was that the auction tag only allows a few select people the chance to shoot a (public) land animal. At least the raffle gives joe public the chance also. When I said the word poach,I was not bad mouthing the hunters.I totally blame the powers to be who give out these tag's.
