Desert Monkey & Ringtail
Matt Tanner posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I just finished up a quail hunt with a fella that owns a wildlife museum in MN he would like to get a Coati and a ringtail to add to his collection if any of you would be willing to go and bag a couple of these critters and keep them in mountable condition, I can give you a bit of $ for your time and gas. Thanks Matt Tanner -
GREAT day for mearns
Matt Tanner replied to IHunt2live's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Looks like you had a fine day! Its been pretty tough this year for sure. It seems like some areas had a hatch and some didn't this year. I have been out a ton and have heard very few shots fired besides the people I am hunting with. Nice hunt and those are some nice looking dogs! I would love to see a few pointing shots if you got em. I have one pic of my little Star I am really proud of this year. Ok Maybe two -
I got my Mounted birds back on Saturday night. I am loving them, they were done by Penny Shellenbarger in Patagonia AZ. she had them done in two weeks. I love Mearns Quail and now I get to look at them everyday.

What about a New Topic?
Matt Tanner replied to gonhntn's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I like this Idea. I am a Pointer guy Cant get enough of them. I also run NSTRA field trials. I Personally cant think of anything better than watching a dog on point. Style Intensity drive determination. A thought on the 870 Who do you think gets more birds a guy with a $5000 dollar shotgun or the guy with a $5000 dollar Bird dog? Guns are just tools to get the desired result. Bird dogs find the desired result. -
it ended up being a good year, I still think last year was a better year for the mearns, but the dogs were still able to find on average 8 coveys a day. this is a little movie I put together some still shots and some good action. Enjoy!!!

Year of the Mearns is over
Matt Tanner replied to IHunt2live's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Nice job, looks like you had a great hunt. I think what the Game and fish meant by this is the best year for mearns ever. is the amount of money they generated off of 3 day small game hunting licenses . It was a great year there was a TON of people out there but all in all if you worked hard you got paid off by a covey of mearns jumping out of your toes. I saw almost two hundred covey rises this year each was just as thrilling as the first, Cant wait till November to start it all again. -

Nice job I have had more trouble finding scaled than any other species this year I would bet if you drove down that mtn and went a bit closer to the golf course you would have had no trouble at all getting your gambles . that is a fine looking pointer!! thanks for the story. -

My BLK&WHITE dog is a pure Elhew. the first two still shots. Moon is a son of Honky Tonk Attitude Billy the one in the open field is Moon's Daughter. he had 5 shells in there and had quite a few coveys with delayed reaction so he was able to get em all fired off a time or two It took him 12 coveys and almost sundown the first day to finish his limit. the next day 5 coveys and 10:30 am he had his 8 birds Better shells better results. he was alot of fun to hunt with you can't hear it over the music but here is that find again I named it "FREAKING ONE" TURN UP YOUR VOLUME AND ENJOY!!! -

I am looking for a good Taxidermist in Tucson. Who specializes in Quail mounts. I did a search and didn't see much more than names and addresses of people. My questions who You use? and around How much does a Quail cost to mount? I would love to see any mounts you might have. Any help is appreciated Matt

There is a lot of Talk about how this bull was taken. it sounds like the guy Paid around 250K to get it done. I also read there is a shed form last year in a garage that will soon be making a appearance we will see. Its one awesome Bull and I think a lot of the bad mouthing is out of Jealousy, I am sure if there is any shady dealings it will come out there were way to many people involved in the hunt for it to remain a tight lipped secret for to long if Improper activities took place. and the people at B&C will do there due diligence and the bull will get its proper place on top of the record book or among some of the other amazing animals taken by cheating. I sure hope for the best.
