    Nikon Monarch atb 12x56

I've had them for a while and they are a pretty good glass. However, I recently bought the Brunton Externa 15x51's which gather light better, are much lighter, are a little cheaper, and have the extra magnification. Just this past weekend I was out scouting with a friend and we used these two side by side glassing some nice coues bucks and you could judge the antlers much better with the Bruntons.

    FIRST COUES = FREE RAGE

Another closer set-up to where the majority of the deer came in was already available and attempted, however even with wind right they knew something was up and wouldn't commit to coming all the way in. This farther location was producing some opportunities at <40yrd shots, so I relocated to it and eventually it paid off. This country is rough and the hike is rough, and your body doesn't usually want to do it 2 days in a row. Although a large rack is nice, I've always been more of a meat hunter. I've always said on my deer hunts that I am going to take the 1st buck I see, and up to this point I've never taken anything smaller than a 3x4. I always knew that spike was out there waiting for me. At least he will taste nice, and being my first Coues with a bow he is still a trophy to me.

    FIRST COUES = FREE RAGE

Thanks so much for the broadheads. Hopefully I can put them to use for spring javelina. We had a great time on the Coues hunt yesterday. Had a few big bucks 90"-105" class, but the waterhole was big and those bucks wouldn't get closer than 70yrds from our set-up. Saw many other sizes from 90" on down to smaller spikes than the one I shot. Saw 30-40 doe and several fawns. We had deer coming in every 20-30 minutes, and never went more than 35 minutes without seeing deer. It is awesome to watch wildlife come into water and not know you are there. One of the fawns kept swimming around in the water eating the algae on the surface. It took us approx 45 minutes in the dark to hike into this waterhole from the nearest road going down hill, and approx 75 minutes to pack him out all uphill. Didn't want to have to make that trip again for a while if possible, and my body agrees today. My 2 boys have the early October youth hunt in this same unit, so I am excited for them. Thanks again!

    how many is too many?

I'm kind of in the same boat. This year I drew the same fall turkey/deer/bull hunts as last year(again will be gone for Thanksgiving), my boys both drew a youth deer hunt, we have planned dove and quail trips, and soon I will be putting in for the spring hunts. My wife doesn't like me being gone so much for the hunts, but she smiles when I tease her by saying "you knew what I was when you married me." She has a long list of honey-do's I have to finish before I go, so it works out. She knows that I try to harvest my animals asap to return home to be with the family, and she knows I am spending quality time with my boys while on the hunts. She also loves the jerky I am constantly making. I don't think you can ever hunt too much!

The Nikon 12x56 binoculars work great, and are very well priced.

    FIRST COUES = FREE RAGE

Out of 15 bucks we saw sitting a waterhole, he was the only one coming within my comfort range of 40yrds. Obviously he wasn't the biggest, but he was my 1st Coues with a bow, so a trophy to me. I did have an October rifle tag in the same unit, however my wife and I will most-likely be in Russia adopting our son, so I wanted to take a deer during the early bow season. I took him at 30 yrds at approx 1:30 this afternoon. palivs2hunt was hunting with me.

    AZ turkey hunts! Who's going?

Unit 1 for me, and I can't wait to take my 12 y/o too!
  9. Great analogy!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. Well it was a good fall this year. Being able to hunt 3 different species this year was awesome, especially since I didn't get drawn for anything last fall. I started with my Unit 1 turkey tag the beginning of October and was able to connnect with this tom on the 2nd day. Then, towards the end of October in the 1st general coues hunt for Unit 33, I was able to take this buck at approx 280yds on the 2nd day. Following this hunt, I had my Unit 22 north bull tag that started the day after Thanksgiving, and was able to hit this bull at approx 400yrds on the 4th day. It was a great time with family and friends, and I was able to meet several other CWT members along the way. I love hunting in this state!
  11. When you can't sleep at night, and instead of counting sheep you count coues...........which then gets you too excited to go back to sleep and so you get on this website to view posts for an hour before you can think about going back to sleep. By the way.........its 1:00 AM right now.

    Southern units and safety

I definitely think that anyone who is going to hunt down there should carry a sidearm. The fact that myself and my buddy were, made us feel a little safer. However, when you have to put your 11y/o behind you and place your hand on your sidearm while your buddy does the same as a guy like this approaches you, and then as your buddy is talking to him in Spanish- have to quickly survey all the hills around you to check to see who might be watching you.........it is too scary of a situation. I wish all of you well if you do hunt down there.......just be careful and make sure you are packing!

    Southern units and safety

If you value your life, you should never hunt south of Tucson again. I hunted in 36A for the 1st time with my 11y/o son and my hunting buddy during my son's junior hunt, and it was an area that some friends of mine had never seen illegals, just a small amount of trash. Approx 3 hrs into the hunt, we came across one that admitted to being a drug runner, but was alone b/c his group had been ambushed by another drug group a few hours prior. There are worse details than this according to his story, but the blood stains on his clothes and hands pretty much summed it up. Now that the drug running is so common down there, in my opinion it is just not safe. This is definitely not how I wanted to introduce my son to hunting- therefore our 1st experience down there has been our last!

    I'm working on it!

    3 for 3 this fall

Not done for a while. I've got spring javelina and turkey tags, and am thinking about bowhunting for coues in January. Until the end of the year, it's dove and quail. I was lucky enough to take this big boar in 37B in Jan 2008 with my bow, and hope to be able to get another next year in 33. Can't wait to get that otc junior spring turkey tag for my 11 y/o so we can hunt side by side, and he can possibly take his 1st big animal. I can't get enough of this hunting thing, and am thankful I've got a wife who supports me in my passion.
