Bighorn sheep draw odds breakdown article?
wapitibob replied to bonecollector777's topic in Bighorn Sheep Hunting
NR drew 1 tag in the Bonus Pass last year, hunt 6005. The remaining 9 were drawn in the 1-2 Pass. 6 were 1st choice, 3 were 2nd. Over 31,800 total res/nr app choices. 19,600+ / 12,200+ res to nr -
Thanks for the clarification on the process.

More than likely the mail is delivered to a lock box on the street. Monday morning it would contain Saturdays mail falling under Bird Dogs scenario; too early.

I hunted it last year, getting there on the 10th. First place I went to I drove my quad past a herd standing about 100 yards off the road. I went around the corner, shut the quad off and there were probably 6 bulls going off right ahead of me. I was into bulls every day, all day. Calling didn't do a whole lot so I ended up sleeping in and sneaking on the bulls as they bedded down. I shot the bull in my avatar at 12:00 noon, sneaking in and shooting him at 10-15 yards on day three. I had other hunts lined up and not being hung up on score I whacked him. If you have the time a 320 bull would be expected from my experience. I did run in to some hunters but one area was well known as a rifle area so people were expected. The other spot I ran in to a guy and he had walked in about 2 miles to get there. My experience was that most locals didn't do much walking especially when elevation was involved. I would have a bunch of spots picked out and would be adaptive, calling doesn't always work like in the videos. These Elk know what you are and they recognize the other bulls are too. Forget the moon and don't worry about any rain, you should have a good hunt. If I don't draw NM I may bring the wife down for some calling and picture taking. If I do and you're solo I can give you a cpl spots if you're having trouble.

I had that tag last year. You can use pretty much any call. For the most part, the bulls never gave a darn about calls for the time I was there. I did call 2 bulls in to 15 yards with my wifes MacDaddy of all things. The Elk are easily patterned if you or someone else doesn't blow them clear out. I found most people didn't like to hike very far. The only place I got jammed was down off the 25 road at centerfire and I knew better than to go there anyway. Most people parked on the side of the road, hunted part way down a ridge and were heading back to camp by 9:00. Most of the herds were heading to bed areas around 9 and I followed several to their beds and snuck in on them. Shot my bull at 12:00 by sneaking in on him after he answered my locating bugle at 11:30. Decent boots, laced tight so your foot doesn't move around will make things easier. There is some rock in that unit and your feet tend to get twisted around as you hike. Take your time if you can. I had been there for a week and shot mine on day 3 of the season. I couldn't go anywhere without hearing bulls bugling and they bugled all day long. My quad made driving to some areas easier too. Some of the dirt roads were pot holed up and had some rock.

They are in the process of posting the results. If it all goes as planned they will be up today.

Who keeps starting these rumors? Waiting periods are not being considered as part of the Article 1 amendments. I won't go into why they won't work anyways because people don't seem to like it when you show them the math. perhaps some misunderstanding regarding the meeting minutes.. Motion: Harris moved and Mansell seconded THAT THE COMMISSION VOTE TO LIFT THE NONRESIDENT CAP FOR JAVELINA AND TO APPROVE A ONE YEAR WAITING PERIOD FOR YOUTH ONLY. Commissioner Davis clarified with Chairman Harris that the motion was for the Department to bring back some language and evaluation of the impact of a potential one year waiting period for youth only, and that this was for the report only and not a determination to implement at this point. Vote: Unanimous 4 to 0

I was given tag #15 for unit 1 archery last year because of a bounced card.
-
Because they changed the rule but didn't update the literature.
-
Not to derail the thread but this is on the drawing board: R12-4-107. Bonus Point System . Enable the Department to issue a license and award a bonus/loyalty point (as applicable) when the payment submitted is less than required, but covers application/license fees to address customer comments received by the Department
-
An email to Amber and the Game dept for implementing the change which made that phone call possible would be a nice gesture. Last year, you would have been bounced. As a rule, all they get are complaints. An atta boy once in a while probably goes a long way.

The 1-2 pass is a point weighted random draw if that makes sense. Someone with zero points could draw before a guy with 20 in that pass.
-
The draw is continuous, from Bonus Pass, to 1-2 Pass, to 3-5. When the draw is complete they process cards, then backfill for bounced apps. Cards take a while because they can only process so many cards per minute.
-
There is no longer a correction period, but yes, they will call, provided the applicant gave them current info.

Something to think about if you are going to add that shot to your arsenal, "generally" 10-12 yards is the top of your pin stack and as you get closer than that, your POI will drop back down. You really need to practice from 5 out to 20 to see your impact points because they change a bunch. When in that 5 yard range it's probably easier to "blank bale" the thing rather than mess with looking thru the sight.
-
I would have hit a cpl inches to the left but would take that shot every chance it was presented.
-
Sort of. You get 10 chances and keep the lowest number. Then go thru the bonus pass ranked by point level. After the bonus pass you get 10 chances at a new low number and go into the 1-2 pass, without point ranking. AZ looks at both choices in the bonus and 1-2 pass draws.

Nope, not exactly right. http://www.azgfd.gov/eservices/BigGameDrawingProcess.shtml

Depends on the hunt and when they pull your name. They look at both and I see lots of 2nd choice tags when looking at the stats.
-
You're golden Have a fun time and make some memories.
-
Depends on your point level. Unit 9 filled in the Bonus pass and understand that when looking at the Bonus report, 31 of those apps that didn't draw were from 2nd choice (res/nr) guys that drew their 1st choices. You should be good with 15 points. The one NR tag for 23N drew in the Bonus pass and 12 residents that didn't draw, drew their 1st choice in another unit.

As a loyal nonresident yearly applicant I beg to differ! I only draw tags when I'm in the max point pool. Every single tag I've ever drawn in AZ has been in the max points pass. All depends on the hunt codes you're applying for. Early archery only has a handful of hunts with NR tags in the 1-2 pass. Late rifle has quite a few more. I haven't looked at the early rifle report but suspect it's not too many. Almost all the NR quota gets filled in the points pass for ALL of the best archery hunts and even some that arent the best and all but one of the early rifle hunts. I'm just saying, I only apply for hunt that traditionally have tags in the random draw and I still end up only drawing in the points pass. I know exactly which hunts fill and if not, how many tags are left in the 1-2 pass. I'm saying If you want to maximize your odds, you need to know which hunts have tags, how many are historically available, and apply to those hunt codes. There were 3 early rifle hunts that had at least one tag drop to the 1-2 pass, 3A, 4B, and 22N.

It's staying in house. They've been patching code over the last 20+ years so they're bringing it up to speed.

Last time I talked to the Dept, they were scheduled to redo some aspects of their computer system in 2014. The thought/hope was that the IT dept would also break out the res/nr for each point pool in the bonus pass and 1-2 pass draw reports. At that point, you'll know exactly where you are in the mix. Still a year away though. Other changes in the mix for NR also.
