The bucks are not even looking at the doe's. I was on a 90" buck today. I seen him at 9:00 for about 2 sec at 600 yards. I got to 300 yards and set up to try to locate him. At 11:00 he came over one ridge and beaded down at 230 yards. As I was thinking if I was going to take him he got up. He only was beaded for 2 to 3 min. I took my eyes off him to get my 270 and set up to take the shot. Poof he is gone, back in the 15's and I can not find him. I think he must have beaded back down out of sight. Sunset and no Gray Ghost. I hope I can get next Friday off to make it a three day hunt. Man this new job sucks!!!!!!

Rem 700 270 Win 19" barrel I had a muzzle brake installed on it 5 years ago for my sons first elk hut. The muzzle brake was done very badly so I just had it cut off with a 11% target crown and it is now a 19" barrel. I used Rem 150gr Core-Locks in it up till now. I Just started reloading for the 270. I am using RE17, 140gr Berger vld, rem and win brass, CCI large rifle primer. I am starting with max load from Berger load data and working down with RE17. Max is 51.5gr and working down to 49gr in .5 increments. Loaded 5 rounds each to see how they do. I will post my results as soon as i shoot them at the range. I hope the chronograph at the pima range is working so I can get better data. I hope the short barrel will not hurt the muzzle velocity to bad and will have the range and power to kill out to 600 yards. 49.5gr RE17 50gr RE17 50.5gr RE17 I like this group its a 5 shot group 51.5gr RE17 I will redo this load as I shot a 51 gr in with the 51.5 group and the guns was hot but didn't want to go another round at the range and shot them just after the 51gr group. but like some of the groups

Load recipe for 300 wm and 185 bergers
DEF110 replied to 1denogean's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Email Berger @ bergerltd@aol.com, ask them for load data for your 300wm. They will email you the data for what grain bullet you want. I asked for all data for my 300 RUM. I use Hodgdon Retumbo. -

Yes it has a 3.5 lbs timney trigger that I had done at the same time as cutting the muzzle brake off. Is that IMR 4350? And why do you suggest that powder? Is it a quicker burning powder than the RE17 for the shorter barrel?

Do you have a mule or a horse? that is the key to 27

Someone shot the chronograph on Saturday at the range so Sunday I could not get any muzzle velocities. It was at 100 yards for now will move to 200 next time and see how well the group stays together. No signs of over pressure at max load. I email Berger for load data and they sent me data for 130gr,140gr and 150gr hunting VLD. They used a 26" barrel so I thinking the muzzle velocities will be different with my 19" barrel. I went with the RE17 because of the fill ratio of 87%

Where to buy used or rebuilt engine for 1988 Toyota 4x4?
DEF110 replied to 1uglydude's topic in Classified Ads
I put one in from http://www.enginesus...ta&engineid=161 in my Aunts Toyota. With shipping, new clutch, water pump, belts, sparkplugs and timing chain front cover. You need to check the timing chain cover to make sure the chain has not cut into the water jacket. This is common for the engine and will allow water to get into the oil and burn up the engine. That's what was wrong with my Aunts engine and I just move it to from the old engine to the new one. After puting everything back in and it was running grate for about 30 min i shut it down and checked the oil it was 4 quarts high on the dipstick and milky. After a lot of beep, beep, beep words I called Bob at Enginesus and he asked if I put a new timing chain cover on or used the old one. After putting a new one on from Rockauto.com and flushing the oil 2 times to get the water out. I did it for $1700 total -

Rem 700 accidental discharge.....Yikes!
DEF110 replied to Viper's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
This has happened to my son and I. I have Rem 700 270. I had a muzzle brake put on it for my sons first cow elk hunt 4 years ago. We got on some elk and when the elk busted us we headed back to the truck. About 50 yards away from the truck I ask him did you unload he said not yet. As he was used to shooting at the range I wanted to make sure he did it safe as we had my sister, brother in-law and nephew with us. We turned away from the truck. I told him to take it off safety and eject the round. I was holding the stock with my right hand at the top next to the barrel, this put the muzzle with brake about a foot away from my ear. As soon as he clicked the safety off the gun goes off. I hit the ground holding the side of my head. My sister sitting in the truck went nuts thinking I got shot, my 11 year old freaked and did not want to hunt anymore. After about 5 hours later I started getting hearing back in my right ear and calming my son down, I pulled out the 7mm RUM out that I took as a backup and he took his first elk two days later. The 270 has been put in the safe until I can afford a new trigger. I think I will use it as a starter for a custom build one day. -
Most are installed maitained by the rancher that has the lease. If they do not have cattle in that area they dont wast time or money fixing them.

After five days of hunting, we had seen 40 to 100 deer per day and turning down spikes and forked horns in the four days prior. I had to talk Wes out of shooting a spike in the morning. After a morning of not seeing more bucks I was questioning myself for talking him out of it, but he had to do better than his 2x3 from last year. The evening hunt started out with three doe bedded at 4:30pm. So we take a road that we had seen deer on and a good place to glass from. I went to the end of the road and turned around to head back to the top of the hill to glass. Wes said lets walk down to the end of the ridge and glass, I said ok. After a 200 yard walk I see a glint under a tree two ridges over. I put the 15x56 up and say I have a deer bedded, set up the tripod and say it’s a buck and a good one. We set up with Wes’s 243 on a bipod and after the range finder batteries being dead; I had to estimate the distance to be around 300 yards “BOY WAS I WRONG”. I told Wes that’s a long shot and with no way to get closer to lay prone and over my pack. I told Wes to put it at the top of his back and just squeeze the trigger, it hit four to five feet under the bedded buck. The buck jumped up, turned and started up the ridge to the left away from us. I tell him to put it two foot over this time and it hit at the bucks feet. After a short stroke of the bolt and a click of the firing pin and a little meltdown Wes gets the third shot off and it hits just in front of the buck. Wes did not take his pack on our hike as it was just to the end of the ridge his extra bullets in the pack. I told Wes this is his last chance and he had to make it count. Wes hit with this one and the buck humped up and walked into a group of trees and did not come out. Wes had to run back to the ranger to get his pack. He wanted to head over and get his buck. I said let’s give it some time. After waiting 15 minutes we started our hike thru two canyons taking about 30 minutes to get over to the ridge the buck was on. Getting to the bottom of the ridge Wes wanted to run strait to the buck. I said no let’s take our time and make sure. We went up to the side and the spot that the buck was hit at. The buck gets back up and after telling Wes not to shoot thru the trees, Wes runs 20 yards in front of me sets up in the bipod with me still looking for the buck, I hear boom and all I see is the buck turn upside down. What some awesome shooting from this 13 year old. He took all my inputs and made the adjustments. Not knowing the true distance I had to wait to get home to upload the information from the GPS to MapQuest. The distance was 450 to 500 yards.

I like huntunit.com @ http://www.huntunits.com/arizona ...They have unit information that give a good description of the unit. Also if you have a Garmin GPS you can go to AZG&F and download topo maps to it or get the directions and do it at home. They have the directions to download for free. After I went to Tucson office and downloaded the maps to my rhino530's I took the directions home and updated my base maps on my laptop. Not sure if al AZG&F offices have this but at the Tucson office you can. It has tobe Garmin

I had the best hunt I have ever been on last year on my son’s first Elk hunt. He was 11 and ended up shooting my 7mm Rem Mag good thing I took it as a backup. It is so cool to see him grow in maturity in one week of hunting. I would give up me getting a tag to take him hunting any time, at least for the next couple years LOL .

MARICOPA AND PIMA COUNTY SHUT OFF??? ALL HUNTERS MUST READ!!!
DEF110 replied to CanyonCountry's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I just do not get how they can do this. Public lands are owned by all of us. We pay our taxes and the forest service is supposed to be a steward of the land not the warden locking us out and restricting the access. I was with my son on his first elk youth hunt in unit 1 two weeks ago. A lot of the roads we went on had fallen trees. It wasn’t that bad at first but every road we tried to get into the area had trees down. It seemed like they had been push over. It should be the FS job to make sure of access. Good thing we had a chain saw. The FS has gotten too GREEN (TREE/BUNNY hugger) for their own good. This is our land and they are here to make sure it accessible to all.
