Big Mulie taken with a bow
creed_az_88 replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I believe the pope and young record typical mule deer is 203. You may want to check it out. creed -
well, i hunted hard in 29 and 30a this past week. i saw most of the deer in 29 but a couple in 30a. The mulies were rutting hard and the whitetail were in the rut a little. I didn't see any big whitetail but i saw two different does being chased by two different deer that had no horns. The two deer chasing the does were not real small bodied and they acted just like bucks but they had no horns. What do you guys think was going on. My guess is that they just had some gene defect or something. creed

I too saw a mulie with antlers broken off at the burr. He walked right into me at 18 yards before he realised i was around. The antlerless deer i saw were walking behind the does and putting their nose right into the does rear end. then the does would trot off and the antlerless deer would follow. while the anterless deer were walking towards the does they would stick their tails up and stretch their neck out. The were acting just like the other bucks in the groups. I can assure there were no horns on these der because i was only about 60-65 yards away most of the time they were there. The bucks with antlers didn't pay any attention to the does. They just sparred a little bit and then grazed around. creed

nice buck man. looks like unit 29 to me. -
check your private messages reynaldo

29 is always a sleeper if you don't know where and how to hunt it. It's a lot thicker than most other areas and the hunting pressure is too much for the area in my eyes. The only time i really see any good bucks in this area is during the rut and the summer(usually around august). It seems that they have patterned the hunting season very well. Most people consider this unit a sleeper until they archery hunt it and see tons of big bucks all over. Reynaldo do you know much about that fire, how much has it burned and what canyons. Ilive in Double Adobe so the swiss elms block my view of the chiracahuas but not the smoke coming off of them. creed

Petroglyph pics
creed_az_88 replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
There was a place close to my home in cochise county full of rock paintings, they weren't heiroglyphs but they were paintings, i think they are call petroglyphs. I never got to see them because by the time i was born some idiots spray painted all over them. I have found a lot of petroglyphs in the area though. I love indian artifacts and the heritage related to all of it. creed -
Hey man where are you from. i love these areas but thats probably because they are the closest areas to my home. Even if i lived far away i couldn't quit loving them. I hunt them just about every weekend, well 30a anyway but i head towards 29 every once in a while. can't wait 'til January. Got a treestand set up in 29 and i know a lot of other good areas. creed

cramerhunts how did your hunt go you never duid tell me about it. creed

i was jus wondering how all you cochise county hunters did. Cochise county is my running grounds so thats why im asking. I took an 86-inch buck(89 gross)in unit 30A . It was only the second day of hunt but i thought it was bigger How did all you chiracahua hunters do with that fire. creed
-
did that fire disturb your hunt any. I see the smoke everyday. It looks like its getting bigger and bigger everyday. If you don't mind me asking where did you hunt. 29 is always full of hunters and its too thick for me, until dec or january. It seems like no matter how hard you hunt that area you see hardly any bucks but when the rut rolls around, bucks are all over, even on the roads. creed

I read the article. It's not too bad. I was hoping to see some more pics though. "50 yard hills" is right. I was going to post pretty much the same thing you posted. creed

I've heard a lot of different ways and seen a lot of different ways of removing the bladder from your deer after gutting it. After reading a lot of your posts i can see that there is a lot of people who dont even gut their deer, and that sounds like a great idea to me. But i was just wondering how you guys do it.

Burro Mountain Hunt Unit 23
creed_az_88 replied to coueshunter12's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
my uncle lives in the burros. I go there every easter and see a whole lot of deer. Bucks ranging from little to BIG. Too bad all i really see is mule deer though. They are everywhere. The whitetail i have seen have actually been in the lower stuff. They have all been prety much out of the big trees and into the brush, cat claw, greasewood, etc. creed -
I shot my 89 inch buck right there. We parked back below the beacon but i walked to about there and saw plenty of does. That was the only buck i saw that day. I do have a feeling that you'll see plenty of other hunters though, but that won't keep you from seeing deer. Theres not a whole lot of other places to go so people will be all over that area. I was calling coyotes down in the flats before inbetween the highway and that those mountains during the october hunt. I heard a heck of a lot of shots in there but i never made it in there to see if there were any deer hanging in any camps. creed

where exactly are you planning on camping. I'll be in there for sure but i'm not sure what day. I'll keep an eye out for you. I'm not sure what i'll be in, probably my dad's old green dodge. You can't miss that big ugly toad. I was in that area hunting mule deer with my parents and saw one little buck this weekend. creed

As a local of the area, i know a lot about this unit. From what i've heard, the skeleton area is being guided by different people but from what i've seen on the maps, only about a 1/4 acre of land is owned on the geronimo trail side of this area but that 1/4 acre parcel touches one gate on the road. The road that goes in from highway 80 is blocked right off thehighway. I love that area and its a real sad thing that it is blocked off. I shot my first coues in there and have seen a whole lot of big bucks, coues, mulie, and antelope. I have hunted this unit for the last five years. I am only 16 now and i have taken three bucks in this area. One spike, one 89-incher, and a 4pt mule deer. I'm hoping to take a good deer this year but more importantly hoping to have a good time, which i know i will. I will help my parents with their hunt tomorrow, their out there right now. I called them after school and they said all the deer they have seen is a huge whitetail buck and a small forked horn mulie with a bunch of does. Let me know how you guys do and ill let you guys know how i do. I'll probably hunt the pedregosa'a most of the upcoming hunt but i'll hit some secret hot spots in other places too. Good luck to you guys. creed

hey 5.8, i wouldn't plan on going to skeleton canyon because it is blocked off and there is pretty much no way to get into there. You sound pretty new to this area. This area holds some pretty nice bucks but they don't show themselves a whole lot. There are a lot of average sized bucks though. If you are not looking for anything real big i would try to get into rucker, which is in the chirachua's. you should find it on a map. I can't really explain to you how to get to the big bucks because you have to go through a lot of private property and it would not be easy for a guy new to the area. I remember hearing you say something about the dos cabeza's. From what i hear they hold some good deer but you have to kow the right areas, but if you asked around in willcox a little bit im sure someone would give up some info. creed

sorry about that i meant to say: hey guys i was wondering if any of you know of any big buck contests this year. I know there was one in douglas last year but do any of you know if they are having it again. I have a good feeling about this year. thanx creed

Hey guys. I have not seen a lot of posts lately so i thought i would get something started. In your guy's eyes, what is a shooter on the first day of the season? I'm only sixteen and the biggest buck I've ever taken was an 89-inch 3 pointer. Everybody told me i should have mounted it but I haven't yet. I would shoot a deer that size again but i don't think i would take anything smaller than 85, but you never know what's going to happen in the field. What about you guys? A lot of the people i hunt with take anything they can get and i respect that but I know that there are bigger bucks out there so i try to pass up the little guys. Just wondering how you guys see it?

I'm thinking 30A. Its almost always a guaranteed draw and not a lot of people think of this unit as a great unit so you only run into people in some places. I know a lot of great places that people would not even think about hunting that are full of deer. This unit is not as popular as some units and I'm glad, as you can tell nobody else on this topic has mentioned this unit. I'vwe never hunted this unit in december with a rifle so i moght just try it this year. Creed
