creed_az_88 replied to newazhunter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Ive always shot 150 grain core-lokts but ive been searching for something else so im glad u asked this question. its hard to find anything smaller than 150 grain from the factory. creed -
now thats a buck. i take it you took it dur. dec or jan. awesome pic anyway. how long ago did you take that pic. creed hey mikey you're probebly gonna have to do a lot of hiking but if you get away from all the people then youll be ok. try getting into horsheshoe cany. if its not locked off. if you want a place thats not too hard to get to then go into cottonwood near turkey creek but get there early. scouting these areas first may be a good idea. might want to find some good glassing points before you start the hunt. its a pretty thick unit so good luck. u can bet that ur gonna see a loth of other hunters in this area but you might get some infofrom other hunters as the hunt starts. good luck creed

cochise county got some moisture most of the day yesterday and last night. not sure how much but everything is still wet and its 10:00. All the mountains have snow. creed

my dad picked up a 300 h&h for $180 the other day. real good deal. a couple friends looked at it and said that the scope was worth quite a bit of money. The scope is a pre 60's weaver with the reticle adjustment on the mounts. I was wondering if any of you guys had any input on the scope. Its in great condition but im not sure what power it is. I can check though. creed

My uncle told me a story of him and a friend of his hunting the rifle season in unit 1 and his friend shot a cow elk. when they gutted it they couldn't get the lungs to come out so they started to cut into the lungs and found an aluminum arrow lodged into the rib cage on both sides and the arrow was through both lungs. It had broken off on both sides and the wounds sealed. He said that the arrow looked like it had been there for at least a year because the wounds were no longer scabbed but they were scars. Thats a bummer to whoever put that arrow into that elk. creed -

My younger brother said he shot and hit one right there but when it crossed over into the next valley someone else shot it. He said it was really big. Did you have any luck archery hunting in there? creed -
It has always worried me but I always figured that it would be all right. my mom is shooting a PSE spyder with a 24 inch draw and a 40# pull weight and about a 340 grain arrow(including broadhead). I imagine it is but is it enough to do the job on a deer? I think that it will penetrate enough to kill but is a pass through out of the question? I'm not sure how fast it shoots but I imagine about 200 fps. what do u guys think? creed
-
Thanx guys, that helps a lot. my mom is 43 and I'm 17 I hunt with my entire family(and thats a lot of people) but my mom seems to be the most independent of them all and at sometimes the most stubborn. I do not like the idea of her be alone in the hills but she would rather be dropped off before the sun comes up and have me pick her up after it goes down. I have to admire her determination but i can never be comfortable with all the illegal traffic in our part of the state. Shes a tough woman and one day she'll be rewarded with a nice trophy. creed

I won't give up your spot but I think i know exactly where that is at. If i'm right then there should be a ranch northeast from your camera about 3/4 of a mile. creed -
I woke up last night about 2:30 to the sound of thunder and rain drops hitting my roof. It was the best sound i've heard in a long time. Maybe with this rain the ground will stay wet and help with my stalking. Before, deer could hear the leaves crunch under my feet a mile before i got to them. Did the rest of the state get any moisture? creed

What would this buck score??
creed_az_88 replied to SouthernCouesHunter's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
He doesn't look to be very wide but you can't really tell. Mass isn't too bad and tine length is about average. He might touch 100 but id say 98. -
I don't know much about the area but i do know that i haven't been seeing any javelina in the hills. They've all been in the flats, along with most of the mule deer. If you can catch them in the flats the chances are you'll be able to follow them most of the day. I would try walking around a water hole until you find some tracks and then try and follow them. good luck creed

those bucks remind me of some of the deer i've been seeing in 29. Your stories are similar to some of my experiences this year. The only difference is is that you guys connected. nice bucks. creed
-
azhuntnut can you give me some information on that flashlight? I can't tell you how many times i could have used a flashlight like that. creed
-
If you don't mind me asking, where in the chirachauas were you. This weekend showed a little bit of rutting activity but just not as much as we would like. It snowed a little bit up there but did not stick to good. The deer are moving all day though so you should have a good chance of seeing some bucks. Little bucks are about all i have been seeing. creed

I shot a 3*3 in november but it had small crab claws so they didn't ad any to the score but his frame was very close to that but not as wide. he scored 86 so ill say this buck will go 89. creed -
Is it me or has the rut been a little slower this year compared to last year. I've been hunitng unit 29 the last two years and the deer here were rutting very hard. I've seen the same amount of deer but most of the bucks I've seen have been alone. I haven't seen near the amount of scrapes and rubs that I did last year. I was just wondering how you guys felt. creed

I just got some new broadheads the other day and sighted them in yesterday. They shoot pretty good for fixed blades. I switched over from muzzies to the 100 grain wasp's hammer sst's. What would you guys rate these broadheads from 1-10? thanx. creed

it states clearly in the regulation book that its first come firtst serve at a water hole. That's too bad man. You seemed to have kept your anger in a little better than i think i could have. creed

are you sure that deer isn't part bear. that's one dark deer. creed
