    help with spotting scope

I will probably not keep the spotter. I have a vortex spotter that serves me well. But if I can get a good deal I'll probably buy the spotting scope and trade it or sell it for a pair of 12x50s. So I guess a good question would be how much could I expect to get for a hibacht scope in good condition.

    help with spotting scope

I'm meeting a guy tomorrow to look at a swarovski spotting scope. He says its a hibacht 20-60x60. Can anybody tell me what this scope is worth if in good condition? Is there anything special I need to know about the scope before I look at it and make an offer? I have no idea how old it is. Im under the impression that the hibacht scopes are older glass and are not made anymore. Will swarovski still warranty them? I don't believe that the current owner of the scope knows much about it and Im thinking that I may be able to get it for cheap. Thanks a lot! -creed

    help with spotting scope

Thanks swivelhead. Its likely that it is not a 60mm. The seller does not seem to know much about it and he may be wrong
  4. Not surprising that everybody is choosing January because it can be fun and the weather is generally nice but if a person wanted to kill the biggest buck possible I would hunt the deer while they're in velvet. I believe that its the absolute best time to kill a monster. Early September. I'll let everybody else recommend the unit but for a giant hunt them in velvet. And you can kill a hard horned deer on any other rifle hunt but unless you archery hunt you can't shoot a velvet coues in very many places.

Who hunts coues with a 30-06

My -06 stacks 150 grain core-lokts out to 500. Bullet drop gets pretty dramatic after that. Arrows have been my ammo of choice for the last six years but if things dont go my way this Aug/sep then I'll be packing that -06 around come late Nov. Ive lent that gun out a few times the last few years and it killed a coues at an unknown distance and dropped a muley last year at just over 300. 30-06 is one of those awesome rounds that are becoming less and less popular. Use it! And then post your success story here on this site and brag about how awesome it performed! You won't be disappointed unless you feel like you need to shoot 600 yds plus.

    Need a Good Hunting Boot

How is the return policy at rei? Cabelas is excellent and If for some reason the meindls were to tear or have abnormal issues cabelas would probably work with you on it. Rei or maybe even Lowa might be just as good but you can never go wrong with buying a product from cabelas.

I was enjoying this thread. Hate to see it peter out so soon so I'll add one to keep it going.

Best advice for somebody hunting this unit for the first time- mature bucks live in the flats not the hills.

    Need a Good Hunting Boot

What kind of boots did you end up with umpqua? I recommend cabelas meindls. I wore the ibex hunters for three seasons and still wear them on occasion but there's not much left for tread. I typically put big miles on mY boots with lots of those miles being at an incline or decline. I couldnt find any ibex's when I went to buy a new pair last year so my wife bought me the air revolutions by meindl. I wore them in January and they are incredibly comfortable. They are slightly more flexible than all of meindl's other hunting boots. More of an athletic feel but completely sturdy enough for the sheep country. I agree with picking what fits best. Try as many on as you can but make sure to give meindl boots a try. -creed

salt or roosevelt for one nighter?

Gonna fish all night tomorrow night. Haven't fished there this late in the summer before. Would the river above the lake still be productive or should we try to fish somewhere on the lake? Were shore fishing for catfish of either species.

salt or roosevelt for one nighter?

Thanks guys. Did you catch channels or flatheads coues crazy?
  16. The price is one of the biggest reasons I don't use rages for deer anymore. Its hard to beat the deal shwacker was giving on their website. 6 heads for 40 bucks. Not sure if they're still selling them for that price. The hypodermics do seem better built...but paying 40 bucks for three heads are a thing of the past for me. Especially when a lot of good fixed blades can still be found under $30. Magnus heads and slick tricks can be found around $25 online if you shop. And magnus offers a warranty that crushes any warranty of any other heads that I'm aware of.
  17. Ive shot animals with rages, slick tricks, inverters( extremely similar to the shwackers), SHWACKERS, muzzies, and rocky mountain gators. I've helped track countless animals shot with an assortment of other heads shot by other people too. I have come to the conclusion that shot placement is far more important than the head that you choose. With your setup, a shwacker will work just fine. It will work beyond just fine. Its a great head for BROADSIDE shots. Most mechanicals are underated by most and overrated by some. As long as the blades are strong enough to withstand the impact of elk bones( shwackers have been proven to be) and you've got enough arrow weight/speed combination a.k.a momentum or kinetic energy depending on what "expert" you're talking to, then a mechanical is a fine choice. I would suggest a 1.5" shwacker for elk rather than a 2" to ensure penetration but that's just my personal opinion. I shot my one and only bull elk with a razor trick thru the heart and only found one drop of blood in the 120 yard tracking job because the shoulder cartilage sealed up the hole. Would I use a razor trick again? You bet ya. Would I use a shwacker or any other well built mechanical? You bet ya. Would I use a flimsy bladed rage on an elk? Not unless I was shooting an elk without a ribcage. -creed

    upper salt questions

Thanks for the info Stanley. Were looking real hard at the lower box of the gila in new mexico. I've been there one time as a kid and it was awesome country. Seems fairly remote and the length seems perfect. I read on a website that no permit is required so if that's true than a fishing license is all we need and we'll be set.

    upper salt questions

The gila and the San Francisco where we used to float got hit pretty hard by the ash runoff so were gonna try something new. A group of us are planning a 3 day float/fishing trip in may but we're pretty unfamiliar with the rest of the rivers in az. We're thinking about a 12-19 mile stretch somewhere on the upper salt. Does anybody have any recommendations on spots to put in and spots to get out? Or maybe a spot on the gila in new Mexico where there wasn't any fish kill off? We don't mind starting on the res if we have to. And we don't mind a rough road to get to the water. We mainly target catfish, and we don't mind hiking a mile or so to the water if we have to. Thanks a lot for any help. -creed

    upper salt questions

We've floated the gila and San Francisco at only 60 CFS so 100 CFS seems possible as long as the river isn't really wide. Do you have to have a permit to float all of the upper salt or just through the wilderness?

No never been on the gila below the lake. Is the water level OK? Have you ever fished there?

    upper salt questions

We are not throwing out the Verde river yet. My buddies really want to hit the upper salt and float through wilderness I just want to catch fish...preferably flatheads of any size. Does anybody know if you can reach the salt on f.r. 219 north of globe? If so how is the road?

    upper salt questions

We all run one person pontoons. 7-9 footers usually. They are about impossible to rollover and they hold all of our gear perfectly. Very comfortable and require little paddling. Well be getting in on a Sunday and getting out on a Tuesday or wednesday.
