Proven SA caliber for coues
creed_az_88 replied to Stickflinger76's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I recommended a 284 but now that I've read a little bit about it I don't think that you could put a 284 or 6.5x284 in a short action and use bullets with any decent ballistic coefficient. Unless you plan on using it as a single shot. Magazine length would be the issue. Maybe somebody with experience can chime In. -
Proven SA caliber for coues
creed_az_88 replied to Stickflinger76's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Anything off derived from the .308 case. I've personally seen a. 308 lay the smack down on everything from coues to elk out to 500. The round is capable on distances much further. I'm sure you'll hear how great the. 260 and 7-08 are also. You could build a. 257 Roberts if you want a sweet quarter bore. It's a solid 500 yard round with a 115 grain ballistic tip or 110 accubond. I've seen mine kill a bunch of deer(mines an Ackley improved though.). 284 win looks sweet on paper. I'd love to try one. -
This guy is unstoppable. That is one of if not the sweetest racks I have ever seen. Congrats on an absolute beast.

Anybody ever own a western field rifle?
creed_az_88 posted a topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I got a western field model 734 in 7 mag. I'm thinking about cleaning it up and trying to make it shoot for my little brother. It's been in the family for years but nobody has really ever shot it. My parents picked it up and just left it in the safe all this time. Just curious if anybody has ever owned one and what they thought about them. Accurate? -
I know a guy who hauls around a back hoe with his. Seems like a big load for such a small engine but he loves his.

*** UPDATE*** Laurie's Deer
creed_az_88 replied to Pine Donkey's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
That's a beautiful buck. Congrats. -
Works awesome especially on roads with locked gates. The ride out is always way funner than the ride in. Unless the locked gate is at the top.

Didn't you kill a giant bull a couple of years ago too? You must be a tag drawing machine. Congrats on an awesome bull. That 7 point side is freaking sweet.
-
Congrats on your muzzle loader bird Don.
-
Somehow I missed this. What a couple of really good bulls. Sounds like you guys had a good time. That muzzle loader bull is crazy massive.
-
Did you kill a bull Becker?
-
Looks like you got your mature bull, and then some. Really cool bull congrats.

Not trying to start a huge debate either but it'll probably end up that way. Sorry.

Glad to hear of some success in what seems to be a very rough September for many. I just thought id comment on the leaving an animal over night thing. Sometimes that really is the best thing to do. Obviously it's not the best thing to do if you know you double lunged the animal but if there's a possibility that that animal isn't going to expire right away then coming back in the morning is absolutely the best thing to do. Gut shots and liver shots are the prime examples.

Str8shot are you saying that overnight freezing Temps cause the cows to go into estrous?

What Dec dates would you Hunt?
creed_az_88 replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Do you have to choose days now and schedule it? If not I would wait until a storm hits and hunt the first couple clear days directly after it. Even if that's in the first week of the hunt. I usually still see most bucks still bachelored up in late December in border units and not really showing much sign of the rut. There are usually a few bucks starting to make scrapes and sniffing around a little bit but for the most part the December hunt down south isn't much different than the Thanksgiving hunt other than its longer and has less competition with other hunters. Don't stress on the moon thing. Hunt right after a winter storm or hunt the last few days of the year. -

I prefer freeze dried. Most taxis will just send it off to have it done. Make sure you be very clear to them that you don't want it done any other way and that by freeze dried you don't mean left in a chest freezer for a year. Freeze drying usually adds about $100 or more to your total cost of the mount.
