When I traveled with my big pack, I was also worried about it getting damaged if I checked it in. What worked for me was putting the whole backpack inside a large duffle bag and stuffing clothes around it to protect the straps and buckles. And if you’re thinking about flying business class flights, you usually get more space for carry-ons and checked bags, which can be super handy when you're bringing a lot of gear.
