speaking of oldies-Tony do you remember a frustrated old writer from Wisconsin Dells by the name of Chuck Nikolai? i shot trap with him and hunted and fished most anything with him from Ensenada to the San Juan. he said he had hunted blue grouse with you as well as turkey on the Kaibab and shot quail over your dogs many times. i'll see if i can dig out some pics circa 1984-1994. he was my house-sitter for the 3 years i was in california. lee

some difficult research trying to back myself up on 'Navajo coke'. finally got to the bottom of it by calling an old native fellow at the Hubbell Trading Post. originally started off as Mission Beverages strawberry soda. i knew it as strawberry Crush. i can not substantiate my bullshit. the gentleman at the trading post said Mission fruit drinks were quite popular but had never heard the term. lee

i am surprised no one has heard of it. nothing negative or derogatory in any way. every person on here has perhaps had a few to drink in their lives. i remember getting sent to the skull valley general store to get 4 navajo cokes for lunch when i was 6. the great Christmas escape from papago park pow camp. a couple of them walked all the way to the mexican border. the ringleader lived for months in a cave on camelback mountain-he would get day jobs to buy groceries. the father of a co-worker was there and after the war emigrated to America sponsored by the farmer he worked for during the war and after until retirement. the boatmen is still a favorite war story in germany. i cannot believe Mantz got the phoenix to fly but it killed him doing it. there is video that's hard to watch. Mom took it hard she had gotten to know him when she worked at the airport in Williams for Larry Ely. i have seen Mantzs' picture on the wall in a yuma hotel. lee

an embarrassing encounter with a little timber rattler ended with me in the ER looking like an idiot. had heard of a rust colored bear from county workers hanging out in the bottom of chevelon canyon. west chevelon canyon is a wicked tight canyon bottom from fr504 down to chevelon creek and you spend most of your time on your hands and knees negotiating bear trails. almost back to the truck at noon this black rattler decided i was not going to pass him in this tight little dry creek bottom. he finally found a rock but had spooked heck out of me. less than a minute later i was down. tripped on down barbed wire i knew was there and ran a staub made by a flash flood through my upper shin. pulled my leg off the staub and humped the last half mile to the truck with my boot filling up and gettin' dizzy too. got some water and bent over, pulled my jeans and skin apart and saw the bone and lots of coffee grounds inside. got it sewn up in winslow-all that da mn snakes fault. lee i have never seen more hieroglyphics than were down that canyon!

not much of a fan of ww or meth at all. cinematography of breaking bad was downright breathtaking and the real star of the series. finally watched the series last year and have to admit that some of the drama was heartstopping for this old boy. the breaking bad movie 'el camino' is out friday but a rocket scientist/mexico fishing buddy called last night after he went to the hollywood premier. said there was little or no drama and can't figure why they even made it. and i signed up for netflix just for this. that may be the 'why'. we'll see. lee
