Which rifle for a youth hunter?
Kaffer62 replied to SteveKDC's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have a 243 savage (w/ accutrigger) that is a tack driver. Would be perfect for a kid. Very low recoil. My dad shot a deer with it @354 yards and dropped it. It's one of my favorite rifles to shoot. -

I think you did the right thing by leaving it. Its mom or another pig will come back and take care of it.

I like to eat chiltepins or the occasional habanero with my food. Not much of a sauce fan. But if i do, its usually cholula on pork skins.

My boy is turning 8 this year and he has been asking to go on a hunt so bad! I figured a Javelina hunt would be a nice way to introduce him and have fun with little pressure. I figured archery hunting might be a little tough with kid in tow so I decided to pick up a leftover HAM tag down south. Friday night came and Miles, my good friend Tracy (Gr8 Wht Jr) and I left Phoenix. We got Camp set up at approx 1130pm and hit the sack. The next morning had us waking up to it snowing. I couldn't believe it and didn't expect it at all. Visibility was low so we decided to grab some coffee and hot chocolate and let the storm pass. By the time we made it to where we wanted to hunt the clouds started to break up. Soon after the sun started hitting the hills, Tracy picked up some pigs and it was game on. We made a plan got the wind in our favor and began our stalk. After navigating through the brush we picked up a Javelina that stood up and start to walk from left to right. The pig came into an opening and I shot, which dropped the pigs in its tracks. Miles was so excited to be part of it and I was so proud of him. He was able to sneak into 22 yards of that pig which I think is huge for someone his age. This has to be one of the most prettiest pigs I have ever seen, almost a blonde tint to it.. I have never mounted a pig before but i wasn't going to pass this one up. Plus this is a hunt that we will both remember for the rest of our lives. Would like to say thank you to Desertbull, I bought my muzzle loader from you several years ago and finally put it to use! Thanks again!

Yeah carrying the extra water for cooking gets old especially after several days in the back country. MREs are great to carry. Pretty good too. Sometimes you get lucky and find a milkshake in one!

Another option if you wanted to keep it. Sportsmans warehouse will display it and insure it while you remain the owner. I did this with a bull elk since I didnt have the room.
