Good luck. Plenty of pigs down there.

Yes. You have to declare your intentions. You can't shoot across a trail either. You can look up their hunting regulations on the Maricopa park website.

My dad has never been someone who went after antler size. Usually the first thing he comes across that is legal is what he shoots. His biggest bull to date was a 5x5. Not a big 5x5 either. He told me before the hunt that he wanted a big bull and he was willing to go home empty handed if that was the case. With that we had our goal. We hunted hard for days until Wednesday morning. I spotted 3 good bulls going into a thicket of junipers. One was what we were looking for. We took off after them slowly moving through the thicket. We were about 100 yards apart and my dad said he could smell them before he saw him. Shortly after, he could see antlers coming through the brush. He kneeled down and as soon as the shoot presented itself, he fired. After a 25 yard shot, the bull dropped afyer 5 or 6 steps. This is by far the biggest bull my dad has shot. I was thrilled to be apart of such a hunt. I ended up taking a spike later that evening. I was content with the first bull seen after that. This is the 2nd time that my father and I shot bulls on the same day. My cousin took a 4x5 earlier in the hunt. Its always a great time in the woods with family. Thank you Amanda for giving us all the opportunity to share our experiences and for running the best website out there!

I don't think this dear is bigger than 70 inches. There are better deer out there, you might as well let me take him. ha ha. Stud buck for sure. My original estimate was 105"

I decide to purchase a leftover muzzleloader coues tag in New Mexico this year. I contacted several people trying to get a feel for what I should expect on this hunt. Due to work I wasn't able to make a scouting trip until 2 weeks prior to the hunt. The scouting trip showed me the beautiful land I would be hunting but without seeing a single deer, I was somewhat worried. Work has been pretty busy and I wasn't able to take any time off for the hunt. This gave me a day and a half to hunt. I decided that the short time I had plus the fact I have never shot a deer with my muzzleloader, the first legal deer I saw would be what I would go after. My dad, a friend from work and I left on Friday and headed straight for NM. We arrived to where I wanted to be shortly after 11. It was 1215 when I set my alarm and went to bed. The alarm went off at 430am. After getting a cup of coffee we headed to the glassing spot I chose during my scouting trip earlier. It wasn't 20 minutes into the grey light of the morning, I glassed up several does. As we watched them a little 2x2 stepped out. I ranged the deer at 910 yards. After watching them and discussing between the three of us, we had a plan. My friend and I circled around the deer and got the wind in our favor. We worked slowly into the same draw the deer had fed into. Right away we picked up a doe at 208 yards. We snuck in a little closer and when we reached 185 yards we found a great spot I could shoot from. With my friend as a spotter I fired at the buck. He told me I shot high. Thankfully the deer just spun and didn't run away. I quickly reloaded and adjusted for the second shot. Once I fired you could hear the round strike the deer. He took 2 steps and laid down. I couldn't believe I had just shot a deer with my muzzleloader. I made my way to the deer, took pictures, cleaned him and headed for the truck. This was by far one of the shortest hunts I have ever had. Everything had fallen into place just like it was written for me before hand. I feel so lucky to have had such a great hunt. Thanks for letting me share this story and Thank you Amanda for such a great website!

Swarovski 15x56 HD w/ outdoorsmans adapter
Kaffer62 replied to twigsnapper's topic in Classified Ads
If you cant sell them by the late December hunt and you want to rent them out... I have a $20 on it. Ha ha Good luck with the sale. -
I prefer HSM Trophy Gold 185grn VLD, but since I cant find those now, I am currently shooting Hornady superformance 180gm SST with good results. I just started to reload so hopefully I will be able to work up a good load using the VLD again.

I have read that they are decent but there are better options out there.. When you have that flex and it puts different pressures on the barrel at different times, its hard to get consistent results. Where are you located?
-
That is which one I had. On mine it was real flimsy up by the barrel which cause a lot of inconsistency. Might be something to look at.
-
Do you have the factory plastic stock on it? If so get rid of it ASAP! I have the same rifle and once I installed a boyds stock, muzzle break, timney trigger and had it glass bedded I was able to shrink my groups to .75 @ 100 yards. Before that I had a hard time keeping a 5 inch group. The scope could be the problem as well.
-
Swarovski optics? I seemed to have lost every model. Kudos for you for trying to find the owner.
-
Great buck! Looks like you had a blast and that looks like great country too
-
I prefer the angled myself. Its more comfortable than the straight. Try both out and find what fits you better. The straight gave me a lot of neck aches especially when looking upward.
-
Are you willing to sell?

GAWD!

The unit is fairly flat which makes glassing tough but you can climb red butte and see for miles. Skinner ridge and the Eastern basin is good for the late hunts. I will be up there for the late hunt as well.
