That is one incredible deer, the eye guards especially. Congratulations to the lucky hunter. -Shiras

Jack, Thanks for sharing and being open. I know if it weren't for the personality of my wife, we would have long been separated by now. I know that I am just as guilty. It is hard to do sometimes but I know it to be true... the true meaning of JOY Jesus Others You I work on it daily. God bless you brother. Proverbs 3:5-6 -Shiras

Aren't the new leverevolution bullets only to be used in the new XLR rifles? It was my understanding that the ammo was exclusive to those rifles, but I may be wrong. At any rate, it is quite an improvement on the blunt nose, nose diving bullet used from the inception of the .45-70. HEADACHE, did you happen to take a pic of the yote you blasted? Maybe that's a bit morbid, but for some reason that caliber and cartidge in particular intriges me to no end. I just love slow moving (relatively speaking) heavy, hard hitting ammunition compared to the magnums of today.-Shiras

Nice bear HEADACHE. I love the 1895M. Been thinking of getting one for a couple years now. I hunt with the 1894P in .44 for deer. It is only 33" long and is a blast to shoot and hunt with. Marlin made it for 2 years and modeled it after the 1895 guide gun. The only thing holdin' me back on the guide gun is how much overkill it might be on deer. Were you using the Hornady 350gr or handload? (I'm just curious as to how it performed) Jon Sundra wrote a few years back that it was going to be one awesome bear gun in applications like yours. By the way it sounds maybe he meant for brown bear. Way to go! -Shiras

Jesus paid it all. Read Psalm 139 to see how much God loves us. http://www.fathersloveletter.com/fllvideos.html is a short clip giving anyone who doesn't know, just how much the Lord loves us. God bless. -Shiras

Very nice. I remember reading the story several months ago and the teamwork between you and your buddy. Great story and great buck. Juan Francisco looks right at home. -Shiras http://www.coueswhitetail.com/New_Mexico/new_mexico_4.htm

For the one that stole my camera...
Shiras replied to DesertBull's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I feel for you. That really blows. I didn't have a cam stolen, but this year I did have a treestand stolen in under 11 hours AND they proceeded to vandalize my box blind by defacating, urinating and tearing all the windows off their hinges. I made that blind soley for the purpose of taking my kids and exposing them to hunting and the outdoors. It made for perfect concealment for all their wiggling and squirming. Sorry pieces of crap. Believe me Desertbull, stealing your cam will somehow, someway come back to bite him in the a$$. It's Karma. -
Nice finds there COOSEFAN! Is that a spike shed Cody's holding? -Shiras

What do you think of this find?
Shiras replied to MooseCoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Since it takes 110 to make B&C and 65 to make P&Y and this 'ole boy is around 122......I'm pretty sure that was a heck of a find there! Congratulations. The 110 minimum Coues score in relation to the 108 Sitka should give you some sort of indication of what a trophy you've got on your hands! -Shiras -
I think that can be contributed to the mass amount of deer that live up there. That is not to excuse the hunter, but rather an explanation for their hastiness. I work with a guy/friend that is from and still goes back to Buffalo county WI. (where he grew up on his mom and dad's farm). It is the #1 B&C county in the USA for Whitetail. He has told me stories of 400+ deer on his parent's corn field looking out the kitchen window. That would be a nice problem to have. -Shiras

Josh, Congrats on the brownies! Those things are awesome! You single handedly inspired me to start hitting the woods hard looking for sheds. I'm not finding any "brownies" thats for sure but have found 3 this spring. Whooopie, I know. But it's more than I have found in a long, long time. The one's I've found in the past were just stumbled upon. I'm going to keep on looking 'till the ticks are thick! I sent a pic to younghunter to see if he wouldn't mind posting it. The 2 dinks, I found yesterday, and the bigger one by my house a couple weeks ago. Those 2 chewed up ones are freaking ANCIENT! -Shiras

I was looking through the NM pictures off the main page and saw this.... http://www.coueswhitetail.com/New_Mexico/N...0nov%201998.jpg "Unit 19A, New Mexico?????????? Nov. 1998 This great 3x3 nets 105 6/8.? It has a 15 inch inside spread and its main beams are 19 3/8 and 18 7/8." 19A? Wow! Now that is pretty far east. According to the NM G&F big game units, it looks like that falls in the White Sands region. I had no idea they existed that far right of the border. Anyone had any luck that far east? Heck maybe those are Texas hybrids, they are so far east. -Shiras
-
Josh, Maybe I'm just not observant. Like I said I was looking at the rack and to me it look whitetailish. I've seen mule deer in pictures here, and in person 2 times, in my 35 years of existence. My mule deer expertise as a whole is virtually non-existent. Here in this part of my state I don't HAVE to tell instantly whether or not it's a WT or MD (since there are only eastern WT) thus my senses wouldn't be as acute as someone who lives in md/wt country. There is good news though, I CAN tell the difference between a mountain lion and a bear. -Shiras
-
Tommy, Yeah, I see what you are saying. The snout is grey or brownish all the way down to his nose and the picture of your son's buck has no dichotomous branching on the G2's (which I thought all mulies had for some reason). I guess I haven't seen enough of either species to make a distinction. Holy crap! Am I glad I didn't see his deer with a NM unit 23 "APRWTD" tag! -Shiras
-
Tommy, I was just looking at the rack with the lack of branching. Can you tell from the ears , body size, color? Just curious.-Shiras

This deer and a couple others were found on Highway 70 between Roswell and Ruidoso. They were poached along with some others. Looks like a coues whitey to me....not sure though... http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/enforcemen...iohondodeer.htm
