    Jumping Jack Trailers

There is no screen on the frond door, only screens on all the windows. The reason for no screen in the front door is because people forget there is a screen there and walk through it and break it. The windows offer plenty of ventelation.
  4. Aside from the early rifle bull tags, I'll bet percentage wise there are more big bulls shot during the archery hunts then during the late rifle bull hunts. Just my guess.

    what sucks more

I don't road hunt myself, or hunt in the vacinity of roads, so for me I kind of feel like they're doing me a favor. First of all it's less competition in my hunting spots off the roads, and second they will push the animals away from the roads which happens to be where I'm hunting. To me road hunters are a good thing! Now a lot of you seem to not like e-scouters as well, but most e-scouters are road hunters or close to it and we already know that they're helping us not hurting us. So what's the big deal? Road hunters and e-scouters? Who cares, they're like dung beatles............ someone's got to eat the $hit!
  6. It seems like a lot of people today feel the need to put laws in place that govern every bit of our lives. Much of what they want to regulate should be regulated by our own consious and or common sense. I don't think we need more rules or laws, we simply need to use good judgement. As mentioned above, common sense seems to be on the decline these days. Many people don't think of the consequences their actions may result in before they do it.

    hunting solo

A good portion of my scouting and hunting is done solo. Often times the time alone in the outdoors is very theraputic and refreshing. There are certainly some additional percautions when hunting alone like telling someone exactly where you'll be. As mentioned above it can be good for the soul. I think it's a great way to test your strength of mind. I once hunted elk for 9 days, 6 of wich I was alone. I really had to have a lot of will power to get up early, hunt hard, pass on smaller bulls, etc. I think the experience made me a better hunter and a better person. I also like hunting with others. It's especially nice to have people back at camp to talk to and help with the chores. For me the best of both worlds is to be alone in the field but have friends back at camp. As far as keeping track of your animal after you shot it? I've never had much of a problem with it. Most of the time after the shot there's another deer or two standing around looking into the patch of grass where the buck was just standing. If that's the case your buck is usually laying there on the ground. Just get a good land mark and work your way towards it. If your deer runs off before dieing your going to have to track it in which case you'll still need to mark it's last known location to get there. It's always a good idea to mark your shooting postion, but I don't like the idea of leaving your stuff there. I once did that and by the time I was ready to go back for my Swarovski 15x56's and I had a REAL hard time finding them again in the dark! I wouldn't spend a lot of time worrying about all this stuff anyway. I usually worry more about all the man eating Sasquatch's running around looking for solo hunters!!!!

    What impact do Bears have?

Several years ago in unit 31 on an October coues hunt I was glassing a canyon where we had seen quite a few deer including a big non typical buck before the hunt. About an hour before dark I had yet to see a deer when I caught movement of a good sized bear working it's way down the canyon. Even at a great distance I could hear the bear as it worked it's way down. It made a very noisy approach tumbling rocks, and stomping through dry crackling brush, cracking branches, etc. Once at the bottom of the canyon it climbed into a large juniper and proceeded to feed on berries until dark. At this point the bear was only about 400 yards away and made all kinds of racket as he climbed the tree, broke big branches, and just made a lot of noise! The same bear came in the next morning, and then again the next evening. I saw one spike buck in that canyon during those two days I was there. My point is that bear are often times noisy creatures. Regardless of wether or not they pose any threat to the deer, I just don't think that deer like to be in the same areas where there is a lot of noise and commotion going on. I think coues deer like quiet areas away from anything that will create any disturbance.

    Jumping Jack Trailers

I own one of the first JJ trailers ever built. In fact it was one of there protypes and test models. My brother used to work for them fabricating the steel, welding, and assembling the trailers. He had a lot of say in how they were built, and he doesn't build junk. About 4 years ago he hooked me up with one of the owners of the company and I was able to buy one of the originals. Before I bought the trailer it had been on numerous hunting trips throughout Utah and Idaho. It had seen a lot of wear and tear when I bought it, and since then I have gotten a lot of use out of it. I've taken it all over Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. It has never let me down. It's not as pretty as it once was, but it tows nice and straight (even full loaded at 90 mph), and it keeps me warm and dry. It's real easy to set up and take down. The owners of the company are real straight forward honest guys. I'd recomend these trailers to anyone! If you have any questions just ask.

    Road hunters in NM 23

In a couple areas I've been to the road warriors seem to be out in force! However my experience is that the areas that seem to hold good populations of coues are not that close to the roads which usually means you don't see many other hunters in the field. Like any public land hunts anymore, get just one mile from the road and you will loose about 95% of your competition.
  11. I've posted this picture before. In fact I use it as my avatar pic. I thought I'd post it again just to get everyone's blood pumping for the up coming NM hunts. This is from a NM unit 23 buck! I'm sure it's from the same buck, it just took me 4 1/2 years to find the other side. The good side scores roughly 54 inches. Bucks like this are the reason I hunt NM, they're tough to find, but they grow 'em BIG!!!
  12. SunDevil, sorry your trip wasn't what you hoped it would be. Although for NM I think it was still a success. I'm sure you already know but NM does not have nearly the quanity of coues that places in Arizona have. In my experience in NM unit 23 seeing 3-5 deer per day is not uncommon as an average. This November will be my 4th year hunting coues over there and I still don't feel like I've got it figured out yet.

    Shed and Head

I was wondering the same thing? Even spikes get 4 mass measurements. I'd get the tape back on him so you can add to his score.

    cards

I can't believe that anybody would consider themself a Cardinals fan??? Why would anyone want to support Bill Bidwell and company??? I believe the cardinals are in there 19th season in Arizona now, and I ask everyone that calls themself a fan, what has Bill Bidwell done for the football fans in Arizona??? The list is short. Why do people keep falling into the same trap each year with the cardinals? It's the same thing, we're going to be better blah, blah, blah!!! The people of Arizona are so niave that we approved (just barely) a 450 million dollar stadium for a looser owner like Bill Bidwell. In 18 years Bill never did a thing to put together a competitive team but yet he whined and whined that he needed a new stadium so we gave it to him. They fans want the Cardinals to win so bad that each and every year they give them another chance and jump on all the media hype that they will be a better team. I think Bill makes way to much money with the NFL's profit sharing to be concerned with putting a solid football team on the field. I wish there was a way to fire the owner!!! Bill Bidwell is without a doubt the worst owner in all of the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL!!! For what it's worth, I'd love to be a fan of the Cardinals. I choose not to be until I see Bill Bidwell make a serious commitment to winning games. Untill then my favorite NFL team is who ever is playing the little red tweety birds!!!

    Different Tactics

I think perhaps the differences in question are that during the October hunt the bucks are not spooked and often times are still bachelored up. During the November hunts the deer have been pressured and often times the bachelor groups are beginning to break up. The key to the October hunt is to do your pre season scouting to locate and pattern the bucks. Once the season starts you have a real good idea what their habits are so you go ambush them. During the November hunt all bets are off. You may have done real good scouting during the summer and early fall, but if the hunting pressure got to the bucks you patterned they could have moved away or changed their habits. Now in a sense you are starting from scratch. Also it's possible that someone shot the buck you had scouted during the October hunt. Good luck!

    257 weatherby magnum

That's pretty much the situation I'm in. I set the rifle up specificly for coues deer but with the intention of using it for any deer, antelope, or bear sized animals. Most of my elk hunting is with a bow, but given the opportunity I'd love to see how it preforms on an elk.

    Bullet for 7mm mag?

I really like the Hornady Interbond bullets. They're a bonded bullet so you'll get controlled expansion even at close range. Also as mentioned above the Hornady spire points seem to be very accurate! I killed a mule deer at 380 yards with one of those a few years ago and the results were devistating!!!

    Austin's Hunt Success

    Nice work Austin!!!
  23. You're right, that's not good news. It's great news!!! Sorry that it will suck for hunters down there, but there is a much bigger problem at hand and the closures could make it better for us all down the road. Good luck!
  24. Wow!!! Keep us posted on that bad boy.

    257 weatherby magnum

A lot of guys love to hate Weatherby's. After all they're expensive, they can be a challenge to reload, they use belted cartridges, They have this interesting thing called free bore, and they tend to be barrel burners. The truth is that Roy Weatherby was a man that was way ahead of his time!!! The FPS he was getting out of his rifles 50 years ago was unheard of. Even today many rifle and ammo manufacturers are just beginning to come close to the same levels of performance that his rifles were getting decades ago. Look at all the WSM's, Ultra Mags, and now even WSSM's on the market today. All of these manufacturers are trying new approaches to the same thing that Weatherby has been doing for years! Get more bang for your buck!!! I'm a big fan of Weatherby rifles. I took a serious look at the .257 wby before deciding to go with the .270 wby instead. To me the .270 gave me option of a little heavier bullet to buck the wind, along with greater kenetic energy down range for those longer shots that coues deer often present. I don't have or want a muzzle break on it, so it's probably not a good gun for a youth, but I can still put 30 -40 rounds through it at the range and not be too soar. I'd say that it kicks somewhere between a .30-06 and a 7mm Mag, which for me is very reasonable. I've shot several deer and antelope with it and nothing I've shot has so much as taken a single step after being hit with it. I personally don't like using ballistic tips with my .270 wby. I'm not afraid of using them for longer ranges, what worries me is how well the bullet will perform at ranges under 100 yards with a muzzle velocity over 3,550 feet per second. I think the bullet may expand and fragment too quickly to make a quick clean kill. I really like the Hornady Interbond bullets. They're a bonded bullet so they hold together better at close range, and they shoot very well out of my rifle.
